Fun match between Simon and Murray at the moment.

I should know, but who is this?

Eugenie Bouchard...

And Canada was without Pospisil and Raonic, both injured, otherwise it would of been another story, but like in the Fed Cup,those thing happen in the Davis Cup as well...although Genie didnt help much in the Fed Cup this year lol...

Murray played 3 out of 4 games for GB but shouldn't there really be limit, for example a max of 2 matches an individual can play. Because if you have a really top player you are going to have a very good chance of winning the tie before you even take a step on the court.

I wouldn't bet all my money on Great Britain. If they lose the doubles they will be in trouble against any team. The big mistake the french team did this saturday was to align a completely experimental team in Tsonga-Mahut, who are both good grass players but didn't manage to play well together. I'd add that, due to the extraordinary DC calendar, the semi-finals and finals will be just after US Open and the Masters, so provided that Murray does well there, relying on him to play and win 3 matches each time could prove to be too much.
They have a real chance though. Goffin is the only top 20 in the 3 other semi-finalists rosters, and even then I don't see him beat Murray.

I'd say that if you look at the David Cup history, it happened rarely that a guy alone managed to win with sub-par players around him. Of course it helps to have a Nadal or a Djokovic in your team, but often titles were won because other players managed to play well too.

Out of interest, have there been any successful two-person Davis Cup teams for a World group match? i.e. the doubles team are made up solely of the two singles players?

Stepanek and Berdych were playing all the matches when Czech Republic won in 2012 and 2013. Despite that and Stan/Roger last year I wouldn't say it happens that often though, usually there's at least one doubles specialist in the teams.

Edit : fun tennis nerd fact, the other Swiss team to make the finals in 1992 was also a two person team, with Jakob Hlasek and Marc Rosset solely playing all the matches on the road to the finals (which they lost against USA).

Jankovic just lost to Urzsula Radwanska in the first round of Istanbul, meaning her last two matches have been defeats to each of the Radwanska sisters. Probably doesn't want to see that surname in the draw for a while.

So 14 year-old Felix Auger Aliassime is in the QF of a 100k challenger, breaking all sort of age records on the way.

Future GOAT or Donald Young?

Or Ryan Harrison. Ryan won his first ATP level match at 15. Maybe since Felix is Canadian, he won't hit the wall American phenom players seem to hit.

Winning matches at a young age is an indicator but not THE indicator. Especially now that 28-30 something players rule the top 100.
It's still somewhat impressive but it's also because Auger Aliassime is incredibly physically mature for a 14 year old guy. It helps and it's not really because he works hard (which I'm sure he does), but because his genetics made him grow quicker.
So yes, for me it's too early to tell.

Atlanta draw is up, and Mardy Fish playing. He refuses to hang it up for some reason. Well, I guess the psych treatment he receives isn't cheap. Gotta pay the medical bills

Kyle Edmund is close to being in the top 100; that would make it 4 British men in the Top 100. Doesn't compare to there being 4 French men in the top 20 but it is progress.

Edit: Just had a look and saw that Ward is already out of the top 100; that didn't last long.

Just Murray and Aljaz Bedene are in the top 100. Has Bedene always played for Great Britain?

He's retiring at the U.S. open. Roddick humbled the fuck outta Taifoe in the exho before the tournament. I've seen avant garde performance art with better for than Francis Tiafoe.

He's leagues better than Christian Harrison. I watched Christian play some WTT yesterday and he couldn't win a single game off Robbie Ginepri.

Was playing tennis yesterday. Went down 3-5*, managed to break back and got it to 4*-5. But I went down set point at 30-40.....and saved it with a drop shot ^_^ I never hit drop shots so it was completely unexpected.

Closed out the game with an ace :) Went up 6*-5, and got broken again, lol

Won the tiebreak though, 7-3

I served HORRIBLY though -___- I hit like 5 double faults (2 back to back. Don't think I've ever done that before)

just kidding I don't play tennis

It's tough to close out a set serving at any level. 2 weeks ago I played a set where the first 8 games were holds. At 4-4 I broke to go up 5-4. dropped serve to 5-5. Broke back to go up 6-5 only to get broken again 6-6. So my opponent and I combined for 8 consecutive holds followed by 4 consecutive breaks. I ended up winning the tie break on a lucky shot. Was up 6-5 in the tiebreak serving when I hit a weak second serve, and my opponent hit a great return up the line. I did a full arm stretch just to get a racket on it and the ball I hit just crept over the net forcing the error. I felt bad because after wasting 2 service games to close out the set I didn't deserve to win it on a lucky shot, but such is tennis sometimes.

Looks like Townsend put on another stone, which would explain why she has dropped 100 spots in the rankings. Its sad listening to these commentators sidestep the weight comments because...you know....feminism and big is beautiful empowerment and all that. They don't want to get hate mail.

Looks like a weird match just finished between Radwanska and Misaki Doi - Misaki Doi won the first set 6-1, then led 2-0 in the second, before losing 12 straight games. Match wasn't televised in the UK, but I followed the score via google. Curious what the players were doing.

WTA lol. It was a combination of two things. Until that 3rd game in the second set Doi played really well, hitting the ball so cleanly and Radwanska on the other hand missing routine shots. But when Aga saved those break points, she gained confidence and cleaned up her game, Doi on the other hand started playing terrible.

The field is so weak in Stanford this year. And CiCi's parents keep ruining her schedule, they really want her to go to college......

Why was she a complete no-show at Wimbledon? Didn't try to qualify for the main draw even though her ranking would have gotten her in the qualifying draw, AND she didn't even try to compete in the Juniors.

Also, teenage cancer survivor Victoria Duval will play in her first tournament since she was diagnosed with lymphoma on August 10th. Looks like she's playing the US Open too. She was in the WTA top 100 when she left, so if her ranking is protected she won't need a wild card to get in the US Open draw.

Eugenie Bouchard has ditched Sam Sumyk(or vicee versa)just before the Rogers Cup,that starts Saturday in Toronto for the WTA and in Montreal for the ATP...so the working for next year plan sure went well ;)

What a disaster.

Chirico is pretty good, don't like how much air she puts on her forehand.

Zverev's backhand is one of the purest shots I've ever seen.

SEATTLE, WA — Quantitative analysis of the performance of men and women professional tennis players over the past five completed seasons shows for the first time that evidence of inconsistency in women’s play is likely attributable to match format (e.g., best of three or five sets), not gender, Stephanie Kovalchik — an associate statistician with the RAND Corporation — revealed at a session focused on analytics of women’s sports at the 2015 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM 2015) in Seattle.

During her topic-contributed session, titled “Are Women Professional Tennis Players Really Less Consistent Than Male Players?”, Kovalchik said she carried out the research project to test the hypothesis that female tennis players are less consistent than their male counterparts.

..

Of the six measures of consistency Kovalchik examined, half showed no gender differences in performance. For the three measures — upsets, letdowns and variation in win percentage — differences were found that suggest female players have had less consistent performance in the seasons considered. However, these differences were observed only at Grand Slam tournaments, where women play a different match format than males — women play a best-of-three format, where the winner is the first to win two sets; men play a best-of-five, where the winner is the first to win three sets.

I probably played the best doubles match of my life....but lost because my opponent literally choked. And although I never blamed him (because shit happens), he was furious afterwards. Got into a little scuffle immediately afterwards, lol

We had a set point at 2*-5, 30-40. We basically pulled both guys out of position and my opponent got a shot where all he had to do was volley it into the court. But he sent it long and....well, it all went down hill from there.

Remember when Roddick missed that volley in the 2009 Wimbledon final? It was just like that, lol Lost momentum is one hell of a thing.

We also had set points at 5*-3....but of course they break us because of the huge momentum shift due to my opponent's inexplicable miss.

They hold and make it 5-5.

Do they break us again? OF COURSE THEY DO! My opponent is mind-fucked and now can't even do anything right. So it's 6*-5, and the other team is serving for the set. I'm just irritated as fuck and I just start going for winners. We break back to 6-6.

So then I start fucking up (hey, I can only be perfect for so long). I fuck up the first 3 points in the tiebreak. But I recover and manage to bring it back even. Fast-forward, we have a set point at 7-6 (IIRC). The guy on the other team is an excellent volleyer, and makes an incredible volley to save the set point. They eventually win it 10-8.

I really wanted to win because I made a once in a lifetime (for me) incredible shot. I was lobbed and I tried to hit it out of the air, but it was too high. So, I have to turn around, make a sprint for the ball before it bounces twice. I get to it, and with just enough effort, I flick it behind me. My opponent didn't think I would get to it, so he's at the net ready to volley it. Well....it goes right over his head and bounces into the court for a winner.

Everyone who was watching was cheering and whatnot because....it was pretty sick =p

And I had a bunch of BH winners and a bunch of FH winners up the line (my favorite shot). I wasn't serving too well though. Just one ace and I didn't really have that great of a 1st serve percentage.

After switching it up, me and my new partner managed to beat this one team 6-0, but one of the guys is horrible so I couldn't take too much pleasure in that, lol

You want best of five for all too brah?

Yes.. Well, the first week it would be a challenge to fit it all in, and to be honest I've long thought that early round five set matches are bad for the tournament also for men, but in the 2nd week? Absolutely. And the WTA has asked for it repeatedly, getting no from the slam bigwigs each time. I don't really get it. Giving the women five sets in the 2nd week or final rounds should not make scheduling any harder, and ensure more great finals.

It is common sense that the longer a match is, the less of a chance having an upset.

If I played a match against Federer that consisted of 1 point, I think I would have about a 3% chance of winning that match. If it lasted 1 game, then my odds go way down to like .001%. 1 set would be .000000001%, and best of 5 would be 0%*

*if he retires due to injury it would not count

So yeah there are more upsets in womens tennis, but there would be fewer if matches were 5 sets. TBH it would just make Serena even more dominant. If fatigue ever gets to her, she could have the luxury of tanking a set to get her stamina back up.

Forgot to post after watching Aga/Kerber last week - it was a superb match, easily one of the best Aga has played this year, controlling and redirecting pace expertly, but Kerber was just too solid when it counted on the big points, and came from behind to edge it. Was very impressed with Kerber's level of play and how she dealt with Radwanska's variation.

Looking forward to Bencic v Bouchard tonight. Last year's darling vs. this year's.

Genie is coach-less again. She will probably get double bageled lol.

Bouchard looks like a scrub on the court. Bencic is a class above her

edit: as soon as I posted that, it started going down hill for Bencic. She dropped a couple MP's, and went on to lose the 2nd set

Watching Bencic and I am wondering how come she is winning a lot lately lol...against Bouchard, who played better after her awful first set,I understand,Genie made over 40 UE's again but Woz played well, although heavily taped on her lower leg,so she probably wasnt 100%...maybe that's her trick, she makes it look so easy or something, she is not spectacular in any way...oh well, let's see how she does against Lisicki tomorrow.
