The only reason she's in trouble is that she couldn't wait, had she waiting until after he graduated it would have been perfectly fine. Charging her seems like it's over-kill in this situation.
I'm not advocating stuff like this, or saying it's ok to abuse your authority, but in this situation--where he is 18 and she's 23--criminal charges seem like overkill. Had they waited a few months they'd be perfectly fine, she should lose her job but criminal charges seem a bit much.

This stuff is usually pretty gross, and I don't buy that because the student is male he isn't able to affected or scarred emotionally by being taken advantage of by a supposedly responsible authority figure. But him being 18 and her only 23 makes this a little different I think.

The most amazing part of this story to me isn't the relationship itself (he was legal) but that it started in HER FIRST YEAR working there. How little self control do you have that, after pushing yourself through grad school to get a teaching degree, you immediately ruin your career within your first year at your first job?

In America you are not an adult until 21, more and more things are being restricted until 21. In my city, you can't buy cigarettes until 21. 18,19, 20 year olds have their rights restricted.

However, nowhere in the country is the age of consent higher than 18. It's 16 in most places.
