Just because something is the law that doesn't mean that law isn't wrong and completely fucking stupid. Because this particular law, in the manner in which it's set up currently, certainly fucking is.
Without even considering the criminal aspect of it, can you not see how teachers becoming romantically involved with their students is problematic?

Regardless of them being legal age, a teacher having sex with a student still amounts to gross misconduct. Would you think it was okay for a doctor to have sex with his patients in his office? Or a lawyer to have sex with his clients?
In New Zealand, it usually results in the teacher being deregistered (meaning they can't work as a teacher) either for a set amount of time until they can reapply, or in some cases permanently, depending on the misconduct.
I agree that possible jail time is rather extreme.
Huh? How would it being public matter? If anything, the longer it went on privately, the worse the situation would be.
