Hey PCGAF!!

I'm bout to buy a new computer and I'm thinking about getting into PC Gaming, the thing is.... Ill be getting a 2011 15.4" Macbook Pro 2.2ghz. I've heard that they aren't the best for gaming but are still able to perform at par. I plan to upgrade my ram to 16 and my HDD to 7200 RPM or maybe even a SSD if I have extra money.

I guess you can say I'm looking for impressions on macbook gaming.

My plans are to use Dolphin, PCSX2, and Steam as well. If I get Windows 7 running on bootcamp, do I get to play a wider variety of games while not forsaking performance??

I'm using the computer mainly for my music production and video editing but I felt it wouldn't hurt to have some games as well.

Thanks guys!!!

I'm not sure of the specs of that Gen macbook, but as for bootcamp it's running an actual honest to got partition of windows, just like if it i were a regular windows machine (with some apple specific drivers). bootcamp is your best bet for games, parallels or other virtual machines is where you'll notice lag.

Any opinions on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312434 ?

I'm coming from a 2 year old similarly priced Asus with a GT520M (blah) and it's starting to fall apart on me. I generally prefer Intel/Nvidia, but I think they're probably out of my price range for a decent set up. Any other suggestions in the 500-650 range?

The 2nd post of the OP has the exact Intel + Nvidia + $600 machine you're looking for sir. Buy that one.

Been testing out some games on the Lenovo Y500 and it is doing pretty good. Sleeping Dogs ran good with high textures, and everything set to high except shadows and 4x AA in 720p.

I guess I need to understand it won't stand up to what my desktop GTX 570 could do. Bioshock Infinite will be a good test.

One question, is it better to run at 720p with higher quality visuals or at 1080p with things turned down?
First, the GTX 570 is a monster compared to the GT 650M, easily over two times the speed of the single 650M. You'll need to overclock these cards to come anywhere near the 570's stock performance.

To the second query, I always prefer the sharpness of native res with lower settings.

Is that the one with just an HD 3000? You won't be gaming much at all on that.

Very nice thread, props to all experts that share their advices here.

Since the display on my old M11x is starting to fall apart (and the fact that the performance is really starting to suck with games), i am currently looking for a new gaming laptop.

Thanks to this thread i started looking for the Lenovo Y500 series and have 2 options:

First the Lenovo Ideapad Y580 with Intel Core i7 3630QM, 2,4GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 16GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 660M.

Second the Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with Intel Core i7 3630QM 2,4GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 2 x (SLI) NVIDIA GT 650M.

Is there any advantage in the second Ideapad with the SLI nVidia-GPUs? Or is the single 660M GPU a better option for general gaming performance? Both are roughly the same price on the german amazon shop, so its only a matter of "better stuff for my money".

If anyone of you is having an even better machine for a 1000,- - 1200,- € budget, that is available or shippable to germany (without shipping fees that match the price of the machine itself), feel free to tell me.

Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work, threads like this one are godlike for the "uninformed" guys like myself.

So if I wait for the new Sager models with the GPU refresh, will buying a high end model for ~2k allow me to play all current games at 1080p/30fps minimum with high details? I don't really care for upcoming games so much, as I've got several years worth of games to catch up to. But I would like to be able to play stuff like Far Cry 3, Witcher 2 or modded Skyrim at those settings.

If not, I guess I'll have to hold out for another year...

I have a GT70 with the 680M, and I can play pretty much everything at high/highest settings with a decent framerate.

Far Cry 3 at ultra settings gets me about 25-28fps on average, so I'm sure if you adjust it to high, it'll be 30+.

Games like Witcher 2, Crysis 3 and Tomb Raider I can't really max out and get 30fps, but if you dial down all the fancy particle effects and AA and all to 'high' and not the absolute maximum, then yeah, you can definitely get 30+FPS.

And this is with last year's 680M.

Well I finally bought a new laptop. I couldn't wait for the new tech stuff.

Clevo for 900€ and it has:

3630QM
660M
8GB RAM
120GB SSD
17.3 FHD
W8

+ Steelseries WoW MMO gaming mouse for free.

Will be nice to play games with something other than low settings and 20-25fps. :p

The SLI has a significant power advantage over the 660M. Like 30-50% at 1080p. You lose out on having a disc drive, though you can buy that separately from Lenovo.

Answer: Yes. The GTX 780M and 8970M will give you 1080p/30fps.

Of course next year's GPUs are supposed to be 2x as fast as the current stock, but that's a long time to wait if you have nothing right now.

Witcher2 you should be maxing at 1080p/60fps, with a GTX 680M, with UberSampling turned off. My 2 years old 6970M can run it on Ultra @ 1080p, and your card is a flat twice as fast.

So, probably been mentioned, but when do we actually expect to see products hit with the new Intel/nVidia stuff and be available for purchase? Since, I'm still looking to be able to get something around the end of April, and it will be hard to wait if I'm actually able to do it then.

Thank you for answering! Looks like i'll be getting the y500 then and send my old m11x into retirement. The missing disc-drive is no problem, the games i have are mainly on steam, and for the few disc based ones i do have an external LG DVD drive/burner. So that problem should be covered. ^^

As much as i don't like dishing out that much money, the thought of new hardware to play around with is always exciting!

Intel's Haswell is set to officially launch on June 2nd, and that doesn't mean everyone will start selling their laptops on that day.

Oh god, my friend just got a new Sager, and it's glorious. My laptop's been giving me trouble for a year or so now, and at some point, I'm going to have to upgrade. When I do... yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up a Sager. His performance is incredible.

I need to figure out how I can afford to buy it.

If you're getting into PC gaming, a Macbook pro seems like an odd choice to me personally.

Was there something new coming from nVidia around that time as well, or did I just imagine that?
And, as you said, not like we would expect to see stuff for sale the day it was launched, but, between that date and when they are available, what are we probably looking at? Days, or weeks, or a month? Don't really remember from the previous cycle.

If I'm figuring to spend around $1700 on (if I did it the end of April) an i7-3630QM (or something like that) with a GeForce 675MX 4GB, how much of a difference would I be looking at for my $1700 if I waited that extra month and a half or so?

I'd expect laptop makers to start taking orders within days of the official launch, assuming they've already shipped Intel chips and have just been under NDA. This will be easier to estimate when we're into May and are hearing things about how Intel is gearing up for the launch.

And Nvidia is releasing the GTX 700M series in the next few months, yes, while AMD is said to be bringing an 8900M to the table as well. Details on either series are very scarce.

Hypothetically, $1700-$1800 should net you a GTX 770M or 8970M. I just can't tell you how fast those cards will be. Well, the 8970M is guaranteed to be faster than the GTX 680M and 7970M which are available right now. The 770M will probably be a more power efficient GTX 680M, going by what's in the rumor mill. If that's true, waiting benefits you greatly. But if it's more expensive than $1700, you're in a tougher spot.

Well, considering my current laptop is an i7-720QM, and a GeForce 230M 1GB, I'm guessing I'm going to notice the biggest difference in the graphics card department regardless of if I go with a 675MX, 680M, or wait for one of the newer ones (going with 4GB either way). I assume I would notice a more sizable difference waiting for the newer processor lines though.

I guess I'm just trying to convince myself to wait a little bit for stuff coming out, as opposed to buying something as soon as I have a chance - since, that's what I'd like to do of course.

Even last year's dual cores beat out the i7-720QM, so you might as well not worry about CPU performance, because any quad core you end up with will be incredibly faster than the one you have now. It's best to focus on getting the most powerful GPU your budget allows.

One thing I forgot is that the leaked GTX 770M specs show it has a 192-bit bus with 3GB of VRAM, so it definitely isn't a 680M derivative. The concern with that is, if the 770M is more like the 670MX, it may actually be slower than the 675MX you can buy today. That's the danger in playing the waiting game. But of course, these specs aren't official either.

Hopefully we have more concrete information soon so decisions like yours are easier to make.

Yeah, I'll definitely be in this thread more near/at the end of next month when I actually do have the money. and it's a matter of deciding to get something right then, or to wait a bit for some of that stuff to come out (and possibly save up a bit more too), at which point we'll hopefully have a better idea about some of it. Just trying to get a general idea about things for now, but, hopefully will be at that point soon.

Just want to chime in on the Lenovo Y500 with dual SLI m650s performance.

Bioshock Infinte runs great at 1080p set to high. I am pretty impressed.

I know this is a pretty specific issue, but has anyone had weird performance issues with Just Cause 2 on a Geforce 650M?

I've been able to run just about everything at medium-high, but JC2 runs at a bit less than 30fps with everything set to low.

Haswell and 7XX/8XXX GPUs cannot come soon enough. My poor laptop (i7-720QM/Radeon HD 5850) is having the same problem with BioShock Infinite that it did with Tomb Raider. Needs moar jiggawatts.

Does your laptop have Optimus? Are you 100% sure it's even using the 650M?

Lol, of course I'm sure it's using the 650M. My laptop has Optimus as well.

I'll keep poking around, see if I can find any performance tweaks. I don't appear to be the only one with this problem.
edit: this is the laptop btw

Sooo my current laptop is breaking down. Its time I get a new one. Can I get some pro tips?:

Country where it will be purchased: USA

Maximum budget: $1600 but $1200 preferably

Max size: As big as they make em :D

Planned usage: My gaming desktop is currently across the country and won't be shipped to me for a couple of months, so I need a laptop that will be a viable replacement in the meantime. Though, even when the desktop comes over, I'll still game plenty on the laptop so I'd like something that has some long-term utility. I don't plan to travel much with it, so neither size or aesthetics are of primary importance; I'll take screen space and power over either any day.

Day-to-day I'll browse, game, and watch/stream HD video. Typical stuff. I code and video edit as well, but I'm not as particular with that; as long as it can function as a temporary workspace thats fine...I'll use other machines for heavy lifting. More importantly, I'm thinking about hosting streams on twitch, etc via capture card, so though I don't do much in that regard quite yet, I imagine that'll be of primary use in the future.

My only non-negotiable feature is its got to have an SSD. I can't go back to the stone ages, man. I fill up storage unbelievably fast, so something like a ~terabyte hard disk + 120 gb SSD is pretty much required.

So what are some good options? I'm a little clueless about high-end laptops and their parts ... whats the outlook for the future? Is hot shit gonna come out in 3 weeks that'll put my machine to shame? I'd really hate to wait but if thats the case I will.

Thanks in advance for the help, you guys are the best <3

How you do you have to buy?

Lmao.

How "soon" do you need/have to buy, absolutely.

Well, my current laptop is still kicking but to say its in horrible shape is being kind. One of the hinges to the monitor is completely out of the chassis. It crashes frequently. Certain keys on the keyboard no longer work, notably the "s", "w", "6", and "=" keys. Thats right. Every time I write/make a post in NBA gaf on this thing, I am copy and pasting in every. single. "s". (or using the on-screen keyboard)

Shits bad. Don't ask me how I let it get to this point cause I'm not proud of it lol

Its the only machine I have when I come home since I still don't have my desktop so I really need a replacement. Its killing me inside.

However

If there really is hot shit around the corner I'll tough it out. Somehow. Thats how much of a power/graphics whore I am. I hate paying top dollar for something that I know will be inferior in a couple weeks.

---

tl;dr if I have to wait a couple weeks, I will. If its a month or so I'll consider it. If its 2 months or more idgaf I can't live like this

Well there's new tech on the way, but "around the corner" for it means mid-June/July, so I'm going to just move forward with showing you what we have right now.

So Nvidia card, dual drive options, 17.3" screen? Wanna go HAM on a Clevo P170EM?

Yeah, this looks like a solid option. I've been researching it a bit and I like everything I hear. Bout to pull the trigger on something like this:

i7-3630QM
16 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
GTX 675MX
256 GB Crucial M4 SSD
750 GB 7200rpm SATA
Intel Ultimate-N 6300 Wi-Fi [I hear Bigfoot drivers suck?]

~$1700 on pro-star (similar on xoticpc)

I can reduce the cost by ~$100 by buying and installing the RAM & SSD on my own, so it rounds to my $1600 price point.

Not bad. Not bad.

Can I get your blessing before I go for it? :D

That looks good to me.

There's two things I'm morally obligated to point out to you:

1. The 7970M absolutely crushes the 675MX, to and is virtually on par with the 680M, but it's launch and subsequent months were hindered by driver issues. Those have mostly been fixed. I personally am not going back to AMD cards, so I won't try to saw you in that direction. But working correctly, it's 50% faster than the 675MX.
2. You should consider purchasing the 2 year warranty. Shit tends to hit the fan inexplicably right at the 1 year mark.

About to buy the Sager NP9150. Getting 2 year warranty. Fine with most of the stock stuff, but are the wireless cards worth upgrading to over the stock one that it comes with?

ok, im having a slight issue. i was having framerate issues a week ago and did a hard restart. everything was working fine since then, but today i boot up modern warfare 3 and it has like a grainy filter over the screen. it still runs at a decent frame rate, but its visually unappealing. is there a way to restore it to optimal settings? ive tried tweaking it in options with no avail

im using the lenovo y500 sli 12 gb ram model.

About to buy the Sager NP9150. Getting 2 year warranty. Fine with most of the stock stuff, but are the wireless cards worth upgrading to over the stock one that it comes with?

I would rather you spend that money on upgrading to at least the GTX 675MX.

Are you having that issue in more than just that one game?

new y500 just smoked my desktop in the bioshock infinite benchmark (old amd quad core with HD5770). I guess it really was time lol.

The laptop is a bit big (wanted the y400 but went for the better screen), but the screen is a monster, the number pad is nice for work, and the sli 650Ms are great. Highly recommended.

Alright fellow gaffers, I have the MSI E7405 gaming laptop which has 4GB of DDR 3 Ram (2GBX2). I am thinking about upgrading it to at least 8GB DDR3, will any type of laptop ram will work on it? What is the benefit of upgrading the ram? Links would be great!

I bought it 2-3 years ago for around $1,100, and bought it mainly because if had the Radon 5870 w/ 1GB of DDR5 VRAM (Which was the best laptop video card of 2010) and 17" screen. MSI official link: http://www.msimobile.com/level3_productpage.aspx?id=220

What is expected of haswell and integrated graphics for laptops? Will it encroach on the lower end of discrete graphics? All it push AMD and Nvidia to offer more powerful options in the midrange?

According to the specs it takes DDR3 SODIMMs. If you go to www.crucial.com you can put in the make and model and it will list RAM that's guaranteed compatible with it (which you can then make a note of the part number of and buy elsewhere, because Crucial's prices are not the cheapest).

I also wanted to know, what are the differences between an i5 and an i7?
What would I need an i7 for?

I went i7 for the longevity. for most games I don't think it'll make a huge difference (unless you had a killer video card and lots of RAM), but for me I do some design stuff where the processor comes in handy, and those routines aren't getting any simpler, so I figure the i7 should last me a little while longer.

On laptops, i5 is dual core, i7 is quad core. i7 definitely recommended for longevity. On desktops both are quad core which is why you see the i5 being recommended as best value for money there.

Hey everyone, I'm looking into some laptops for a friend. I was hoping for some suggestions. It will be used for basic things, like browsing the web, music, movies, etc. He plays alot of league of legends, so I'd like to find one that can run it on decently high settings (60fps). He'll be buying it very soon, his old HP is literally falling apart.

It will be bought in the US.
Maximum budget: $550-$650
Size: Around 15"

I was thinking something along the lines of: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...lack/7658047.p?id=1218857084845&skuId=7658047

He originally suggested: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+EN...=7701076&st=hp envy m6&cp=1&lp=1#tab=overview

Another one we just found: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...goryID.44066900/categoryID.50787200/list.true

Thanks for any suggestions.
