The 2012-2013 Gaming Laptop Thread | Read OP before asking questions!

thank you very much!

it seems like the first laptop has had it's price jacked up, so the second laptop is looking more appealing (I'm falling into their evil plans), even if the laptops look kind of ugly. dont really understand the appeal of glossiness

are there good resources for looking for laptops around that price range that haven't been provided in this thread, besides just blindly google searching obviously

sell it! the lenovo sounds awesome on paper but its ridiculous that so many machines suffer from this problem.

I'm conflicted on it being in the OP. So many people say their Y580 is fine, yet so many have the stuttering issue and have to RMA for a replacement. We have Gaffers on both sides within this very page of the thread.

What do I do? Add an asterisk?

thank you very much!

The first laptop's price is very fair, if not an outright steal. That's the only GT 630M within $100. The GT 640M is 2x the 630M's speed, so asking more for laptops equipped with it has to be expected.

To search on your own, go on Newegg or Amazon and filter search by those price ranges. Try $450 to $750.

I'm looking to get a new laptop sometime in the next month or two, and any advice would be useful.

Country where it will be purchased: US

Maximum budget: Probably $2000

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): My current laptop (an Asus G73jh-B1) is 17.3 inches, and that's about as big as I'd want to go. I'd be willing to go down to a 15.6 inch screen for the right power.

Planned usage (what kind of games, if heavily gaming at all): It will be a primary gaming machine (I have reasons for not going desktop). Would like to run Witcher 2, Skyrim, Farcry 3, and possibly upcoming games in 1920x1080 on at least medium settings, if possible.

I'm only now starting to look, and if there's reason to wait even more I don't necessarily need to upgrade right now.

Maybe I posted this in the wrong thread before so if anyone can help me :

could you please tell me what is the most beautiful/impressive game I can play with enjoyable enough fps with these specs :

Ivy Core i5
HD4000
8 GB of RAM

?

(it's a 13' ultrabook)

Postponing purchasing my new Lappy til February. Contacted a retail and asked if they can provide a Y580 by February and said they'll get in touch with an update.

Wow, I found this thread at the right time! My brother wants a new laptop, and any advice would be useful.

Country where it will be purchased: Spain
Maximum budget: 900€
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): 17"
Planned usage (what kind of games, if heavily gaming at all).: He just wants to be able to play DayZ and League of Legends. In fact, he only wants a new computer so he can play DayZ, as our main rig has a shitty Core 2 Duo and the game becomes unplayable whenever he gets close to a city. He would settle for medium settings @ 720p, I guess.

---

Thing is, here in Spain people get their Christmas gifts on January 6th, so I'd like to buy the computer in the next two days :lol. I'm just looking for the best computer within that budget and look for the closest one in the local stores.

The best computer I've found so far is the Sony Vaio BibiMaghoo posted about... Can't believe he got it for 575$, it's around 900€ everywhere I've looked around here (including Sony's web store :( ). It has a shitty 7650M, but besides that I think it has pretty decent specs... Doesn't it?

I think the Sager NP6370 would be a good fit for you. Here is the configuration page. I'd add:

CPU: i7-3630QM
Memory: 16GB RAM (free anyway)
Hard Drive #1: depends on if you want an SSD (there are free options as well)
Hard Drive #2: see above
Optical Bay: Blu-ray
Wireless: (Free) Intel Advanced-N 6235
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

If you only do the CPU, Blu-ray, free stuff, and OS, you're at $1224.

It's hit or miss. Some get lemons, while many are completely unaffected.

About the Acer, I'll say decent, which to me is an upgrade of up to 40%. The Acer is only packing DDR3 video RAM, while other GT 650Ms have much faster GDDR5.

May I also ask, why you seek to replace the HP?

Thanks for the tips, do you happen to know what 72% NTSC Color Gamut is for the monitor itself? It seems to be much more expensive. There is also an option to add a video adapter but i'm not sure if that means it doesn't have hdmi and such by default or if this is something on top of it. If you also had to pick, which variation of the CPU is really the best balanced for the budget out of the one you listed? Lastly, I don't see that wireless card available, not sure if they changed it or if i'm missing something, been out of town a couple days but wanted to get back to this so I could get one ordered soon hopefully.

What we're waiting for, explicitly, is to find out how much of an impact the PS4 and 720's up to date hardware will have on the minimum and recommended System Requirements of PC ports. To me, it seems like we won't know the full scope of the damage until developers are actually allowed to talk about the consoles and the games they are making for them.

We're expecting Haswell in Q2, and AMD/Nvidia will probably have released the high-end mobile cards around the same time; E3 2013 is in June, and at least one of the big two will reveal a console there. So yeah, I'd expect the picture to become more clear around that time, but we may not know the full breadth of how PC gaming is affected until 2014, when games are actually being previewed, played, and released.

Buying today, the only way to come close to future proofing yourself is to go for a GTX 675MX, 680M, or 7970M. Even with waiting on the "8xxx/7xx cards", one will need to be going after the near top of the heap cards to feel comfortable. Because, next-gen or not, the GTX 760M isn't going to sniff the GTX 680M's performance.

Ultimately, the only way to truly be safe, is to buy whatever comes out after the consoles release, but most of us can't wait that long. Personally, I'll be buying a GTX 780M equipped laptop on day one, probably from MSI or Clevo.

Right I see. I think I'll either wait till then or get one with 680M if I can get a good price + battery combination. Thanks for all the info.

From what I understand, the hd4000 as the only gpu will limit its performance to low settings on older games. It's an on board gpu, meaning its a bit shite.

Someone else can be more technical lol.

The Acer suggested for me earlier on the page got delivered yesterday and it's going well so far. A few teething problems but I have Arkham City up and running and I'm surprised how good it looks! Thanks for everyone's help in the thread

Only problem I'm having now is when I connect it to my TV, which is a fairly old Samsung LCD (720p/1080i) It keeps the resolution slightly above 720 and centres the picture which means I have a border around the screen that I can't see. When I switch Steam to big picture mode it snaps to 720p so that's fine but I can't get the desktop to change to that resolution which is giving me problems watching media and stuff. Any suggestions?

Been a busy couple of days. I sold my old laptop to a friend and picked up an Asus G46 for gaming. Now coming from a console background, this thing is incredible, running pretty much everything sans-Dark Souls at 60FPS/max settings. The only downside is the 1366x768 native resolution.

Basically I'm considering upgrading to either the Asus G75 or G55 as they have a native res of 1920x1080 and use the i7 3630 processor (the G46 has an i5 3210). My concern is about performance, and how these machines will handle games at 1080p. Unfortunately I don't have a 1080p display to test it on with HDMI, so this could be a shot in the dark. I don't need settings to be absolutely maxed, but a stable, high framerate is a must and medium to high settings would be preferred. All three machines use the same 660M graphics card and I'm unsure how big of a difference the i7 processor will make for gaming. If most games would run poorly or be forced to low settings at 1080p, I'd rather stick with 1366x768 for the better framerate.

Thoughts? Thanks.

Neither?

The 72% Gamut matte is a different screen altogether, which is a more expensive premium option.

The video adapter stuff is talking about external extras, so ignore it.

The i7-3630QM is the only viable options. Any more is just burning money for zero return in fps gain.

Looking back at the page now, it appears the free stuff they were throwing in is no longer being done, so ignore my wireless comments.

Have you checked the Nvidia Control Panel for external display management options?

Covered in the OP. Medium settings at 1080p are a given in everything, High settings possible in almost every console port in existence.

or I guess, is there something fundamentally wrong with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310630

like price-wise for the hardware it gives, or if there is something bad about a GT 435m, like anything that would stop you in your tracks from buying this laptop besides it being on the weaker side

I mean like one of those was one you recommended in the OP, so what is your reasoning?

I didn't realize the price on the Acer has risen over $120. In that case I'd take the Lenovo.

What about this one: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9150-clevo-p150em-special-edition-p-5175.html?

Going down to 15.6 inches doesn't bother me. Do Clevos have a reputation of running ridiculously hot?

That is a really good deal. I need to edit the OP with that SKU.

There's also a 15.6" version of the MSI, fyi, with a GTX 680M for $1588. And Clevos have a reputation for running ridiculously cool.

Thanks for the answer again, I was gonna pull the trigger and they removed all the other free options too, real bummer. At least I have a good idea of how I should be shopping.

Is the Acer Aspire V3 available in your area?
Yeah, just checked out online and it is... However, I hoped to be able to get a computer with a quad core CPU, just in case double cores get behind soon. But, to be honest, there's a 270€ difference in price, so maybe it's worth it...

On the other hand, everyone and their mother has told me that Acer is one of the worst laptop manufacturers, so yesterday when I went to every damn store in my area I directly skipped every Acer laptop :lol Maybe their new computers are better...?

In fact, the Sony Vaio is the only decent computer on my area (besides this one) that fits my budget. Every other laptop either hasn't a quad core, or has a smaller hard drive and less ram, or costs more than 1100€.

Have you checked the Nvidia Control Panel for external display management options

The only options I get in the Nvidia control panel are to do with 3D display output. I have to go to the intel panel to get resolution options and changing that fixes nothing. Using it as a media player through my tv was one of my top 2 reasons for buying so this is rather frustrating :/ Was hoping to watch some Game of Thrones on it with the family tonight so if anyone has any other ideas it would be appreciated :(

Acer has raised their level of quality to be even with the other manufacturers in the price range, but people still look down on the brand name.

Are there any Spanish online computer stores you can link me to, so I can look around for you?

What about options to extend/duplicate the desktop, or resize, which allows you to drag arrows to stretch the desktop to the edges of the screen? All of these options were in the NCP last time I had an Nvidia card, which is why I'm asking.

Maybe try updating to the latest drivers on the Nvidia site, to see if that leads to any changes.

Thoughts on this Samsung? I'm still looking for a suitable laptop for when I move abroad this April

The Y580 I found that's on sale isn't 1080 so I'm not really interested in that

How big of a difference is there between the new 675MX and the 680M?

The Sager NP9170 special edition doesn't have the 680M as an option, but it's 350$ cheaper.

Well, they've just announced the new refresh of the Series 7 on Youtube, so I don't know if that will affect your opinion. Overall, I really admire Samsung's gaming laptops, style wise. Superb screens, great speakers too. GPU strength wise, the 7870M is faster than the GTX 660M by about 15%.

Also, here's the 1080p Y580 on Newegg.ca for $1,199.99 CAD.

25% difference, maybe more depending on the game. Scroll through the benchmarks at the bottom, and click on Compare, to see by what % it loses to the GTX 680M on Ultra settings.

How powerful is the 650gt 2 gb. I was looking at the 14 " Alienware and I really like the design and feel of it.

Country: Canada (Toronto, Ontario)

Maximum budget: 1,500. Although if a great laptop exists for a few bucks more, I'll be willing to push it a little more.

Max size: bigger is better. 18 inches is the limit.

Planned usage: mainly playing indie games off Steam, like Awesomenauts (if that counts), The Binding of Isaac, Terraria. Nothing too taxing on my laptop. I'll be using it as a desktop replacement, so "high tier" for what's listed is a must.

Other: battery life isn't important, considering how I've rarely unplugged my 6 year old laptop as it is. Higher resolution is better. I use my current laptop a lot, and it overheated/shut off while I was playing Hotline Miami. Any laptop that doesn't run the risk of overheating after an hour and a half is okay by me.

Thanks for the advice on fixing my resolution issues. Have not been home all weekend but will try those solutions tomorrow evening

This might be a stupid question but I've been wondering - how upgradeable are most laptops these days? 10 years ago I used to know plenty about my desktop and be able to build/upgrade machines but I'm well out of the loop now. I'm happy with the laptop suggested to me last week (Arkham City looks great at 720p which is all my TV does anyway) but I'm already wondering how long it will last me. The model I purchased has a core i3 2.4GHz, 6 GB ram and a 1GB GT 630M

I'm wondering, a year or 2 down the line can I put an i5/i7 in this? Can I upgrade to the current high end graphics cards (675M/680M) when they drop in price? Can the motherboard even handle these upgrades and will power become an issue? Also, could I put a Blu-ray drive in eventually and will the form factor of the laptop be a non-issue? I'm assuming the curved cover on the DVD drive that fits the laptop clips off and would attach to a new drive?

Thanks for all your help so far and sorry for all the questions. Just excited to have a new gadget and with the gaming possibilities that lie ahead!

I want a new laptop so damn badly that I'm starting to heavily consider that MSi in the header, even more so now since it's under 1.2K USD on NewEgg. That CPU though is causing me to relent especially when waiting another month or so will net me the i7+7970 Alienware m17x.

Sooooo conflicted.

Edit: That Samsung would also get a look from me as well twinturbo, but why u no black Samsung?

I'll need to do some research into the upgradeability of this specific machine, in regards to whether the CPU and GPU are permanently connected to the motherboard.

The Blu-ray drive, I can say is a definite possibility, assuming Acer has made it simple to remove the drive from the bay.

Watch this MSI GX60 related video.

I have the Lenovo Y580 but I use it for school work mostly. Decent laptop that runs cool. Bought it for about $740 after taxes.

Looks like I have to save up some cash. I was also considering the Samsung Series 7, but I'm not sure where that falls on the scale listed in the OP.

Well the Series 7 is a very well designed notebook, and I have no problem with someone choosing it. You get less GPU for the dollar, but the 7870M is still a relatively powerful GPU, capable of handling many games at 1080p. To be clear, the GTX 675MX is listed in a higher tier for a reason; it leads the 7870M by over 50%.

Gotcha.

I think I'll be sticking with the Asus G75VX. Any significant difference between the G75VX and the G75VW? Future Shop has the G75VW for roughly 1,400 bucks, last I checked.

All I needed to hear. I'll save up for a few more weeks so I can splurge on the Asus you listed. Ideally, the IT guy from my mom's office could get me one for cheaper. I'll wait and see. Thanks for the advice!

The 675MX is 35% faster than the 670MX, just fyi.

Country where it will be purchased: Germany
Maximum budged: 850€
Max size: It´s not very important, the main time will be in school,at home or in a rehershall room
planned ussage:I need a new laptop mostly for music recording. I have a Tower for gaming but when I play games on it it´s something like torchlight I/II
So I need a good CPU / 8gbRAM minimum and a fast HDD.
Other facts: / quite

I looked two up but don´t know wich one i should take.
My first favorite was the Nexoc M272II (Like Schenker based on an Clevo/ assembeld in Germany)
Intel I5 3210M
8GB 1600mhz RAM
and a 500GB Sata III with 7200 r/pm
side facts: 1600*900 screen
17,3"inch display
Nvidia GT645M 1GB GDDR5 RAM
weight: around 2.8 kg
http://www.notebooksbilliger.de/not...oc+m727ii+i5+2x+250ghz+8gb+ram+500gb+hdd+43cm
price 800€ inclusive 2years pick & return warranty

The seconde one is an Dell Vostro 3560
with an Intel Core™ i7-3612QM
the rest of the important specs is equal except of an 32gb SSD
side facts:
15,6"inch 1920x1080 screen
and AMD 7670M 1GB VRAM
lighted keyboard
weight: 2.6kg
http://www.notebooksbilliger.de/dell+vostro+3560+notebook+in+silber+102459
price 850€

So I don´t know wich one I should take, because I think that the I5 can Handle the programms I use (no Highend stuff (it´s to expensive for me)).
Just to know wich one is the better gaming laptop?
I heard of an bad Dell tech support. But don´t read anything about nexoc but I heard Clevos are very good
I´m looking for 20% off so both would be much cheaper

thanks

Why a laptop: I need something on the go. Don't want to build a desktop right now.

Planned usage: I want to learn video editing and do some gaming at a decent fps. DayZ is the only game I want to play right now, but It's be nice to play like Witcher 2 or something.

Edit: I think I want to try Newegg's preferred financing. No interest for 12 months instead of Paypal's 6 month bill me later.

Country where it will be purchased: Germany
Maximum budged: 850€
Max size: It´s not very important, the main time will be in school,at home or in a rehershall room
planned ussage:I need a new laptop mostly for music recording. I have a Tower for gaming but when I play games on it it´s something like torchlight I/II
So I need a good CPU / 8gbRAM minimum and a fast HDD.
Other facts: / quite

I looked two up but don´t know wich one i should take.
My first favorite was the Nexoc M272II (Like Schenker based on an Clevo/ assembeld in Germany)
Intel I5 3210M
8GB 1600mhz RAM
and a 500GB Sata III with 7200 r/pm
side facts: 1600*900 screen
17,3"inch display
Nvidia GT645M 1GB GDDR5 RAM
weight: around 2.8 kg
http://www.notebooksbilliger.de/not...oc+m727ii+i5+2x+250ghz+8gb+ram+500gb+hdd+43cm
price 800€ inclusive 2years pick & return warranty

The seconde one is an Dell Vostro 3560
with an Intel Core™ i7-3612QM
the rest of the important specs is equal except of an 32gb SSD
side facts:
15,6"inch 1920x1080 screen
and AMD 7670M 1GB VRAM
lighted keyboard
weight: 2.6kg
http://www.notebooksbilliger.de/dell+vostro+3560+notebook+in+silber+102459
price 850€

So I don´t know wich one I should take, because I think that the I5 can Handle the programms I use (no Highend stuff (it´s to expensive for me)).
Just to know wich one is the better gaming laptop?
I heard of an bad Dell tech support. But don´t read anything about nexoc but I heard Clevos are very good
I´m looking for 20% off so both would be much cheaper

thanks

Take a look at these notebooks.

Why a laptop: I need something on the go. Don't want to build a desktop right now.

Well, the cheapest notebooks I have are the first three in the OP. But you want to play The Witcher 2, and you can see here that the GT 630M runs it like crap. You may want to aim higher, for something like the Y580.

The AMD Radeon 8000M series was just announced at CES.

I see that the Samsung Series 7 Chronos previously mentioned has the 8870M, where can I get more info on that one?

EDIT: Found something

Sounds good...

Cool.. my current laptop was a CES 2010 announcement so if there are some nice ones announced this year maybe I'll look at those as possible replacements.

Quick question: is it possible to remove the optical drive and use that space for an HDD? I been thinking of doing that since there aren't many 15 inch laptop with 2 drive bays and the usual 5400 HDD they pack is total weaksauce, but even a 256GB SSD is too little storage these days, so its better to have the too.

I barely use any discs these days so its not a bad idea, the thing is how to pull this without breaking the laptop.

I´ve looked them up but they won't be an option, because the HDD is to slow with SATA II and the SATA III with a matching RAM and CPU will cost too much ...

So Dell or Clevo(Nexoc)?

EDIT: I talk with an sound engeneer and he told me that the screensize is more important than the I7 because the I5 can handle what I want to do.
So I think I take the Nexoc M727 II

How do you know the HDD in the Nexoc is SATA III?

Nearly every modern laptop supports what you want to do. It just depend on how easy they made it to remove the ODD.

edit: also, with some laptops you'll need a bracket to help the HDD rest properly
