The 2013 Formula 1 Pre-Season Thread |OT| Plenty of Time Left in the Silly Season

Mclaren's new approach to 2013 car bite them on the beginning of the season, it seems like they are struggling quite a bit on longer runs.

Yeah but I guess that's to be expected. Theoretically, with an all-new car, they have an advantage over the course of the season. They just can't afford to waste much time in getting to grips with it, especially if Red Bull capitalise with an early lead.

I wonder if McLaren would've looked that bad if Hamilton was still with them.

We've all seen how Hamilton was blistering fast last year while Button was sometimes struggling to make the top 10.

Lewis looks like totally different person now. Like he is free, not some kind of Mclaren slave...

So, testing is over, 12 days to go! :D

Just watch the live ones on BBC and either watch their highlights for the ones they don't have or find 'alternative' ways to watch.

Thankfully the BBC highlights packages have been excellent, and I haven't really felt the loss of the live races at all. The only time it becomes a genuine irritation is the North American races, where the race highlights are on past midnight.

Yeah for early morning races like Australia I'm just planning to watch the BBC highlights at lunchtime despite having Sky Sports F1.

Can you not just record it? Do you not like watching all the pre-race stuff? I'm a real stickler for the detail.

I could but I prefer the BBCs coverage. If it's on around lunchtime I'll watch it over Sky anytime but it'll be interesting to see how it is without Jake.

I love the BBC pre-race stuff, Sky's is embarrassingly bad at times so I tend to avoid it.

PS didn't know you were from Northern Ireland!

Might just see what the BBC coverage is like then.

East Belfast, you?

The F1 W04 has completed 5224 km over the three tests, with Nico and Lewis totalling 2640 km & 2584 km respectively. Very good, if we consider almost 2 lost days of testing.

Who's going to make the |OT| anyway, and what will be the text? I vote for:

The 2013 Formula 1 Season Thread |OT| Having a rear end like that should be illegal

BBC coverage is BAFTA award winning if that means much to you with regards to the quality of it.

South Belfast during the week for uni, back home to Eglinton at the weekends like all uni students haha.

Nortern Ireland F1 GAF Unite! (Bangor here)

True, anyone know what other users are planning to use with f1 race manager out for 2013?

Was wondering that myself, there are so many ones - but ive no idea which ones are any good.
Didn't a few people try a different league last year? (Cant remeber who)

Been looking some times of last testing in Barcelona and i saw that RBR haven't even tried running so called 'qualifying stint' like Mercedes and Ferrari did. Are they so confident about their pace?

I hope I'm wrong but I have this feeling that RBR are going to come to australia and just blow everyone away.....too hard to tell with everyone else but Mercedes/Ferrari/lotus & Mclaren look very evenly matched

I don't think they will be. I've seen nothing to indicate they're any faster than their main rivals right now.

Well pretty much every analyst under the sun is saying that they think RBR are out in front, with Lotus, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren all much of a muchness behind them. Given that there's no reason for them to show their true pace in testing, that's all we plebs have to go on at the moment.

I saw a headline this morning or last night that Ferrari still think the tyres are quite unpredictable, so there could be some upsets. Or it could just be that Ferrari alone haven't got their heads around the tyres yet.

I don't think red bull will have lost any speed, there are some differences but it is an evolution. The question is whether the others have caught up or passed them. I'm not convinced Merc have fixed their reliability and wear issues, but they seem to have media savvy speed at least.

I imagine RB and McClaren will be at the front with Ferrari, Merc and Lotus just behind. The rest, who really knows! And any way, it might just turn out to be a tire crapshoot for the first few races.

Autosport posted a summary of testing. Mercedes got a lot of laps in despite those first 2 days.

EDIT: This is Barcelona data only I think. Doesn't include Jerez so my above point is invalid.

Could you imagine if mercedes is actually as fast as the testing times suggest.....Hamilton would probably be the smartest/luckiest guy in sport

They were fasted in testing last year and it didn't help them. Pat Fry said that the key to speed is once again understanding the tyres.
