The script was written years ago and studios kept passing on it. It was actually written before Whiplash.
 
LaLa Land is going to be the American beauty of the 10's. 2-3 years down the line everyone will realize what a mediocre shallow movie it was and promptly forget it.

An original musical written by a 24 year old is not exactly going to blow the doors off most studio executives' offices.
