Sure, the 911 will always be the 911 (in whatever electro-hydraulic hybrid engined form it will take), but now I bet we'll see the other sports models like the Boxster or Cayman being badgineered into VWs and Audis.

And yes, as a former Porsche 924S owner I realize how stupid that makes me sound. But still!

What was wrong with the 924?

After over 40 years (some will say 50), VW and Porsche are finally one company. VW has officially acquired Porsche for good. The history here is so complex and twisted it's ludicrous.

How long before we see the Cayman/Boxster rebodied and sold as a 'baby Lambo'? A month? Two? :p

I don't understand the point of this. That guy should absolutely wait for the 2013 Fusion. Are you disagreeing?

You bought the more unattractive older version of your car, despite the newer version being available and only a bit more expensive! LOOK INTO THE MIRROR.

A bit more expensive? More like 7-8 grand. And I paid cash. If you are going to chain yourself to a car note, you might as well wait a couple of months and get the redesign.

...which would mean that, to quote, "...for the same options he would have been paying $150 more a month"

Saaaaaaaame!

Bought my first car last weekend!
Have always been told:

Do not buy a new car for your first.
Do not buy a French car.

Despite this I picked up this black DS3 DSport Plus.
I'm not really a massive fan of little cars either but it has zero road tax, seems very fuel efficient, and was voted Top Gear Magazine Car of the Year 2010, so it can't be that bad!

Despite not being a huge fan of hatchbacks I think it looks really nice as well :)

Very nice! Congrats! I think it's decent looking as well.

I'll never get used to the dumb air dam on those, but them wheels is HYPE.

They're not air dams. They were going to be, but somewhere down the creation of the car Nissan changed their mind and closed off the fangs, thus closing off any air dam. People remove the little plastic closures, since they're held on by plastic clips and run brake cooling ducting.

Aesthetically, I personally love the 'fangs' on darker colored cars like mine with the blacked out headlights. On the yellows and whites, it does look off. But painted black, it looks extremely aggressive.

What was wrong with the 924?

As ascii42 said it was going to be sold as a VW but VW decided not to go through with the deal. It was originally sold with a completely terrible VW engine and everyone regarded it as a bastard child.

We did get the 924S and the 944 line out of it, fortunately, so ultimately it worked out in Porsche's favor (even if people still say the 944 wasn't a real Porsche it is now a classic sports car).

I like the DS3 a lot. Nearly bought one in a sensible phase, then bought a Z4 instead :p

Does yours have the LED sideburns?

Yeah it's got the little LEDs on the side. It's hard to see them in the photo.

When I think that Porsche could have ended up owning VW this really sucks. Ultimately I think that would have been a better end for the ownership dispute, now I'm legitimately worried about Porsche's future as a unique automaker. So far as I remember the intention was to have Porsche do the development for sports cars and my worry lies in the idea that it is going to dilute what makes Porsche special.

Sure, the 911 will always be the 911 (in whatever electro-hydraulic hybrid engined form it will take), but now I bet we'll see the other sports models like the Boxster or Cayman being badgineered into VWs and Audis.

Don't really see the need to worry much considering how similar moves have benefited the other exotic brands they have.

I don't agree with either of those, but it's your cash! What's enough money in this case, like $6000?

A bit less actually, around $4000. Why don't you agree with my choices? I can accept that I might be a bit nationalistic, but as I remember them, they were great models!

Looking good....which products do you use for detailing?

HD from Autopia.org

The waterless car wash is amazing. It's a spray which is fantastic for getting rid of dust, light road dirt/dust, and light rain dirt. The dirtier your car is, the more I suggest spraying and the more microfiber cloths I suggest using to wipe dirt off and buff out spray residue with. I use their waxes and their polishers too. The MF towels are fantastic, much better than the cheap garbage they sell at regular stores.

Drive channel on Youtube has a series called Drive Clean this season that goes into thorough detail about using clay bar, washing, waxing, etc. It is a really informative series.

Clay bars are no joke. I clayed my 944 Turbo and the difference it made in the smoothness of the paint was startling.

Really liking this paint job, with the stripes, not necessarily the shade of red. Although it's a bad photo. Maybe I can boy-racer it up a bit.

Well that's even better! Mostly my prejudices. I've always thought that Saabs looked wierd, and Volvos will always be library cars to me. Not something to desire.

Yeah dude, it's amazing all the shit that gets embedded into the paint. Takes a lot of work for not much visual gain, but it's like that old saying of "but I'll know it's there" or whatever. Can't wait to have a paintjob worth caring for again!

Hot.

I came really close to picking up a 2010 Black Cherry last year. It was brand new, just hadn't sold. I'm debating getting the 2013 model when it comes out. Not sure if I prefer the small changes or not.

May also go for an A5... not the same performance level at all, but I'm a VW/Audi fan.

So, I have a question about vehicle trade ins. Do dealers really give a shit what condition the vehicle is in? The day I was at the Hyundai dealer and drove the 2013 Gen Coupe they were ready to offer me pretty much exactly what I would expect to get from a dealer (4500) given my car in good condition. The sales guy saw the cracked windshield, recorded some info from the drivers door and verified the mileage before writing me the offer that they were ready for me to sign. He did start the car and saw all the lights on the dash.

I am driving my car in a condition that I would not sell it personally. Multiple idiot lights on due to a brake master cylinder that needs to be replaced and a crack that runs 3/4 the way across the windshield but below my sight line. The brake fluid level sensor is bad so that disables my traction control, turning on my TCS light and puts on a permanent parking brake light and the general idiot light. Three lights due to that issue.

The power steering fluid purges bad after it is topped off due to a degraded O-Ring that allows air to be sucked into the system.

I suspect that I could get at least 6200 and closer to 6500 from the car selling it privately after fixing the issues and a thorough detailing. It is going to take probably 900 to replace the windshield and brake master cylinder. The PS fluid issue is a 5$ o-ring and about an hour of personal time.

----------------------------------

This is a random observation about searching for BMW E90 3s and Audi B8 A4s... If you don't want one in black or silver or any color close to those then you better be prepared to travel. If you want a MT as well... smh

It's been a little over a year since I got my Fit, and in that time it's logged-- wait for it-- 35,000 miles.

Goddamn.

That's all thanks to brutal commutes, several camping trips, and a couple of epic road trips to 2 ALMS races. With all the passengers, tents, cameras, and backpacks, I've come to appreciate Honda's brilliant packaging and versatility much more than I expected. Thinking about how much I've saved on gas, compared to if I had been driving my GMC truck all this time, is always a huge relief as well.

Man, I really need to check out more of their stuff. Wish I could download to watch on my TV.

I can't recommend Drive's stuff highly enough. I particularly enjoy SHAKEDOWN's Trackside features for no-commentary HD racing pornography, Driven's thorough factory tours, and Chris Harris's weekly reviews. Incidentally, he's driving the new Pagani Huayra on tomorrow's segment. Can't wait.

Really? Guess I just don't really agree. Look at the leaps in build quality. Old lambos / ferraris resemble a kit car a lot of the time...least the ones I have seen up close. The aventador isn't exciting?

As Clarkson said, they don't try to kill you anymore. And the build quality... build quality is nice, but I don't expect a Camry. Too much computerization, too much old-white-man-ization.

Well, considering that the idea of a lease is that you are paying the depreciation over the course of the lease, in theory that last sentence is completely false. In practice, it probably comes down to what sort of interest rates you are getting, and if there are any great lease deals.

The point is that if you lease and return it you are more likely to get the full residual value than if you buy and then sell it after 2 years. Unless you do a private sale and your usage is way under the lease mileage you won't get close to full value if you upgrade. Normally when you lease, they give you really good residual value, although it depends on brand and model. Almost any luxury brand has way better lease residuals than you are likely going to find on trade in.

If I was getting something like a V10 BMW or something high end like that that drops in value fairly rapidly after a few years because of out of warranty repair costs, I would certainly lease.

Although with the used market on smaller models going ballistic the last few years, leasing does make a lot less sense for that particular segment.

Nice, yeah your paint looks like a mirror in those pics. I'll have to try that. I have used Zanio (http://www.zainostore.com/) products forever, but always willing to try out new stuff.

Never heard of it, I will have to check it out. I have really gotten into detailing over the past couple of years. My current method if anyone is interested if I am detailing a car for the first time is...

1. Wash the car with Dawn dish soap to remove any wax already on the car. Don't make a habit of washing your car with Dawn, this is ONLY to remove wax. I am a fan of the two bucket system, one for the wheels and one for the car. I buy cheap car wash from walmart to clean my wheels.

2. Hand Dry using only 100% cotton towels. Towels not made in USA are usually not 100% cotton. A lot of hard core detailers will tell you microfiber towels scratch paint, although I have never personally had a problem with microfiber.

3. Clay the car, I use a car wash mixed with water with the clay bar. You can use a spray detailer here as well.

4. This step is only if necessary and could damage your car if not done properly. If you want to remove swirls/scratches. I use a potor cable and a paint cleaner, using a cheap polish here will never work, (again I use Zanio Z-PC). Depending on how deep the scratch or swirl is the more aggressive pad your going to use on your portor cable, I use this quick guide found here http://www.autopia-carcare.com/lake-country-pads.html?gclid=CJX43LvlkbECFUXc4AodCCrHdQ

5. Remove any residue from your paint cleaner using a detailer spray, then apply the first coat of wax. I use Zanio number 5 here. A good wax will NEVER have to be removed using a orbital buffer, wax does not clean your paint, it only hides imperfections. Let dry then remove by hand with only 100% cotton towels.

6. Apply second coat of wax, I use Zanio number 2. Same application process as before. You can apply as many coats of wax here as you feel necessary. Finish off with a spray detailer to remove any residual wax.

Nah man, but I know that off a track, I'd never be able to reach their limits. Might as well fly a plane. I know I'll never be able to reach my STi's limits either, and they're certainly lower than an exotic's. To me they seem more and more as just status cars for those with cash, performance is a second thought, there because it's expected rather than desired.

'sup guys, a question for you guys if you don't mind.

With the release of the Toyobaru twins, would you still consider a GTI/WRX/Mazdaspeed3/ or any other hot hatch out there?

I ask coz my bro is looking to buy one of the 3 listed up there. Granted, he's already experienced how the Toyobaru would work for his daily needs since he drove my NC Miata for about a week. He loved it, but the lack of utility drops it by a million points(something with which I agree with lol).

So what do you guys think, are the Toyobaru twins worth it or do they suffer the same fate as the Miata, purely meant as a second car(which I don't agree with it as I daily mine), and thus needing the use of a hot hatch?

Lastly, here's a pic of my NC Miata.

A friend of mine just began a lease on a 2012 Ford Fusion. I am going to bug him relentlessly for not waiting on the 2013.

Good decision. Its a really great car. I have loved the hell out of my V6.
I dont like the new styling as much as the current one. Much prefer the more angular form of the 2012. Its already a great car, and improvements on it wont change that fact. Plus the newer model will be more expensive to boot. The 2012 model is not a bad choice at all.

If I get a BRZ it will be my daily driver. With the ability to fit 3 passengers OK or fold down the back seats for extra cargo capacity I think it would make a fine DD. The ride is apparently pretty compliant for a sporty car as well.

Does he have a family/kids, etc and/or is he over 40?

If so, then yea - the WRX or MS3 are the easy choices. If not, fuck utility and get the BRZ/FR-S - I daily drive a coupe and wouldn't have it any other way. There's plenty of time to drive practical stuff later - if he waits until he's older to buy a sports car, he runs the risk of looking like 'old Corvette guy'.

Test drove a Fusion SEL with a v6 today. Really nice car and they seem to be offering pretty deep discounts off sticker right now, but I'm still worried about depreciation after the new body style comes out. If I get a SEL today for 23-24k how much do you think it would drop in value once the new one comes out? Also are there any shots of the interior from the new 13 model? Found out apparently it comes out September 3rd. Been looking at a ton of cars lately like the Focus, Mazda3, Elantra, Cruze, etc.
