I'm pretty sure fuel gauges and range estimates lie though to prevent you from running it dry.

Not really true anymore. My cars when they're low, they're not BSing about. If my Z reads "---" I have less than 1 gallon left. Same goes for my Jaguar. In the past, my Maxima and my dad's Infiniti had at least 2 gallons left when the needle sank low after the fuel light came on. But in modern cars with digital readouts, they are extremely accurate and I wouldn't second guess them.

1 gallon is NOT a lot of gas, at all. A drive to the grocery store and back can deplete that in a lot of cars. And of course, depending on where you live.

Why? I don't know (I looked a little but didn't find the info) how they're doing profitability-wise, but I think the Scion lineup probably fares better as something separate from Toyota, which remains focused on the "cars as appliances" demographic.

AFAIK Scion is very popular and sells a lot of cars. They definitely need the brand.

Well, nowadays a bit since the FR-S. Their other cars are certainly lackluster.

At the same time, hey, not many other makes can say 20% of their lineup are RWD sports cars. Build a 4-door FRS and 1/3 of Scion's lineup is RWD and sporty. I don't think there's much outside of Porsche and BMW that can beat that.

Scion has half a foot out the door in the US. Toyota has acknowledged very lackluster sales and allowing dealers to close or merge with local Toyota lots.

How weird. I see tons and tons of Scions here in CA. Maybe not as popular in other parts of the US? It's a popular brand among the 16-25 year olds here in CA. :\

I was under the impression that Scion ended up being the even cheaper/utilitarian verison of Toyota for 50+ year olds looking for variations of the Corolla.

And yeah, Scion isn't doing too hot in the US.

I thought that people in that age bracket represent a miniscule amount of new car purchases. So even if the brand is popular among young people, they aren't buying anywhere near the volume of new cars that older people are.

Yep, same here in Texas. I kinda feel bad for them too since they're so uninformed about it. They think it's Toyota's answer to a Civic Si lol. Funny thing is, they always slam me for driving a Miata... it's always a fun time when wannabe boy racers almost piss their pants at some high speed cornering.

shit, realize i've been turning vsc sport mode on the brz all this time when i wanted to turn on the transmission one.

looser traction control doesn't affect my daily drive at all, but the longer sportier shifts sure do. Crazy how automatics are quite good these days.

Maybe it doubles as a stapler. That's the kind of innovative thinking you just don't get with other manufacturers.

That's German Engineering, yeah boyyyyyyyyyyy

Note: Stapler sensor must be replaced every 20k miles or stapler will throw error code which will disable door locks and headlights.

That's the media control, it's something new. the gear shifter is still on the steering column.

the interior looks weird man. I expect more harmony and less style in a C-class. The screen looks like an afterthought, it should have been integrated.

I thought the shitty touchscreen integration in the CLA was to keep costs down. I never imagined their designers thought that actually looked good enough to integrate it into the C-Class.

For shame Mercedes.

Seems to be the way things are gong now. BMW 3 series also has the half an ipad jammed into the center stack as well. I dont like either designs too much. They both look like criminal magnets where someone will try and yank it out.

Are they at least responsive enough?

The system in the BRZ is utter shite. Unintuitive and crappy touch response.

Yeah, at least the 2nd gen CTS had the decency to have a retractable screen.

Speaking of, as nice as Tesla's screen is, their UI (and especially UX) is severely lacking. The performance isn't great either --- especially while web browsing (niche user case scenario, but it's a great way to gauge performance). Scrolling a page on their browser is a slideshow.

have you tried using the gps on that? its crazy it doesn't default to 3d view. Had to dig through 3 menus to figure out how to change that.

Been using my phone for nav anyhow.

I have been using it in default mode. Took me 15 minutes to find the option to exclude highways from the route calculations.

The audio cues that point out landmarks is a decent touch I guess. (e.g., turn right after the next gas station, turn left after the stadium, etc).

In the BRZ, a random song starts playing when I insert the USB drive. Then you have to hit the search button to bring up the list of songs in the folder. From there, the back button is used to navigate through the folders. (?! shouldn't that take me back to the Now-Playing screen?!)

I sometimes wish Apple made a car. Then the problem would be that it would cost $50,000 and come in one trim and one colour.

1 US gallon is 3.78l. I've driven a lot of cars that can average around 3.8l/100km (100km is 62miles so 62MPG) at lower speeds :p

I lived in the middle of nowhere in a place with a population density of 8 per sq km (20 sq mi) in a small village with a small "city" 30km away and a small town with a petrol station 20km away. With an average cruise consumption I'd consider doable in most cars (7l/100km, 34MPG) You'd barely not have enough fuel to go shopping, but I wouldn't expect an hour long trip to be doable with the fuel level/range being "-".
I was also thinking about the Top Gear eps where they kept driving for quite a while with the range estimate showing zero miles.

Drove a Yaris with the touch screen just recently and it did pretty well, though it was annoying having to guess that the up/down arrows spooled the track and they clearly weren't made for podcasts with the slow spooling. The USB and AUX port were also in the very top corner of the glove box. Impossible to even see from the drivers seat and hard to reach even from the passenger seat when the car was standing.

Interface wise, aren't there a lot of decent Android head units you can mount in a car? I hate the custom look, but if it's just a screen it looks better than the implementation in many cars.

People should focus on fucking driving, not some stupid INFOTAINMENT bullshit.

Really though, I drove my miata for years and hardly ever used the radio because it was so bad. The lack of music and stuff never bothered me much at all. I guess it also helps that the car was engaging to drive even on the highway.

I really don't want an infotainment system. I want a nicely designed radio with an aux jack, bluetooth, and a cd player. That's it. Anything else is superfluous, a shortcut around proper console layout and is going to look horribly dated in two years tops.

Remember the digital dashes in the 80s and how unbearable they are now? Yeah. That's what we're doing right now.

bluetooth is fine for me who usually just listens to podcasts on my commute.

infotainment crap is usually for the passenger to dick around with anyhow. Unless your a/c and what not are controlled by the touchscreen... but then, that's your fault for buying that car ;)

Honestly, I can't live without bluetooth. I love that I can actually look on the road when I'm switching my music instead of fumbling on my phone trying to change it. I actually find it a hard task to switch between Spotify and the iOS music player just coz it takes too much time unlocking and switching apps. I have to do it at a stop or I'm gonna be running at redline since I can't shift while using my phone lol.

Same reason why I don't text either. Not gonna lie, if given the ability I'd probably do it, but I'm glad that I can't. It's just better that way.

i remember apple talking about partnering up with car folks to get ios or siri or some crap in the cars, what ever happen to that?

I think there are a few manufacturers doing that. I know Chevrolet is putting that in some of their cars.

Let me get back to you on that.

EDIT: It appears BMW is doing that, too.

Also, nice S2K you got there, ShowDog, any mods planned?

I'm telling you guys, Nissan/Infiniti have the best infotainment systems. Being able to control my music without ever having to take my hands off the wheel and hardly ever look at the screen is glorious. I can toggle all of my music options right from the steering wheel.

If I were to do anything, it would be limited to a basic intake, an exhaust I'm quite fond of and an ECU flash (06 and later stock ECU is flashable). ECU flash can increase torque substantially through the middle of the power band, increase AP2 redline to 8500 and VTEC can be engaged as low as 3500 RPM.

But I plan on relying on this thing getting me to work every day for at least the next year, so if I do anything it won't be too aggressive.

Get a test pipe, you can't engage VTEC as low when you have a cat converter. It makes a big difference.

And get a 3" exhaust like the HKS 76mm. Makes the 70mm exhausts like the T1R sound like junk and makes more power. Don't expect huge gains though, the tune + exhaust + intake + test pipe will make maybe 15-20 whp.

Also, you got lucky. Suzuka Blues usually come with the nasty smurf blue interior. :D

Yep, I was aware of the need for the test pipe. I'll research exhausts a bit before I buy one, I honestly haven't done too much of that. I prefer dual if only for looks and because I wouldn't need to replace the back bumper, and I REALLY don't want anything that drones at cruising speeds (one pro about the one I linked earlier). It's already hard enough to get used to cruising 4500 rpm in 6th without a droning exhaust.

And about the interior, yeah, 06 was the last year for Suzuka Blue and the only year that came with a mostly black interior. I really wasn't digging the smurf blue dashboards either, to be honest.

If your trips are that short you don't really need to hook up music do you?

It's my work day. I spend a lot of time in the same car over the same roads and there's nothing better than a good podcast to go with that. I dunno what the average is, but I always go through 2 hours of whatever I am playing.

Sounds like something they just stole from Renault :p
Renault have had buttons on a stalk since I think the 80s. On our Espace you can cycle through sources, scan the radio, change CDs and tracks and of course change the volume. It is strange how some feel something as cheap as buttons should be options.

By the way, I want to thank everyone here for the input that led to picking an S2000. It really wasn't very high on my radar even as little as two weeks ago, and I've been daydreaming about a new car for a long ass time.

I tried to heed much of the advice. It was same owner since 5k miles, now at 87k. The tires are Michelin Super Sports with 70% tread left, it was a private sale for $14k, and I had it inspected pre-purchase by a specialty shop that deals almost exclusively in S2000's. Compression check and everything else came back good. Even the roof mechanism has been replaced, sanded and deburred with new elastic straps and some insulation to keep the damn fabric from tearing.

As far as I can tell, the only negative was that the prior owner had some horrible parking lot luck (or is just terrible at parking). Several of the panels have been professionally repaired/replaced and resprayed/blended, though you would never tell by looking. Zero front end or rear end damage, including original radiator so I know it's never been in an accident, and the carfax is clean so I shouldn't have much of a problem selling later.

If you have one of these cars in the Orange County, CA area I would highly recommend Ballade Sports as an auto shop. Alex was very impressive during the inspection and got everything right, even going in completely blind with no service history (I have the history, he didn't want to see it until afterwards).
