Anybody here into drifting?

For those who don’t know, drifting is a Motorsport / art with roots in Japan. One of the fastest growing motorsports of all time, where your goal is to drive a car sideways as fast and technical as you can. Sometimes alone, sometimes with others.

Pro drifting season for USA kicks off today, here is the live stream live from Round 1, the streets of Long Beach:

Personally, I have been into drifting since 2001, and began drifting myself in 2004.

First exposed to drifting around 97. I attended almost all Hawaii Drift Sessions in Hawaii from 2001 until the track closed in 2006. I took a hiatus until I moved to Denver in 2017 ans picked a Nissan Cefiro but damn I really suck nowdays

Benson Hsu did a great video with drifters from the OG Hawaii scene (Hawaii tends to be forgotten when Us Drift History comes up) Its argued that Hawaii was the first to see D1 level drifting back in 2002 with Signal Auto Drifter X. I dont really follow pro level drifting, Im more of a fan of Final Bout style events.

Hawaii OGs

Drifter X 2002 Hawaii

My old video, I wanted to show people what can be done with a stock Ka24de

My cefiro, Denver IMI

I too am a bigger fan of grassroots / street style. My car style stays soundly in the early - mid 2000 look.

But I still enjoy following the pro scene too. I only have 2/3 drivers I really like and it’s all due to their car styling. Masuyama came over from FD Japan 2 years ago, and I like his s15 style and his aggressive driving.

I also watch D1 in Japan still, mad respect for the first pro series.

Hawaii definitely did and still does put out some heat.

You are killing it in the Cefiro man! I have a s14 I have owned since 2006, and I got another s13 a year ago but have had to shelf it due to my moms illness and having to help in that area. It’s been a few years since I have actually went drifting so I am a bit worried about how I may have fallen off.

What’s your favorite drift media of all time?

Hope you mom gets better.

I havent drifted since the Cefiro back in 2017 ( its in Hawaii with my brother now). I just drive a 2022 Genesis G70 like a boring person.

Favorite vid? probably the first time seeing Ueo in Ikaten in an old Option VHS. Btw we took him to a Hawaii strip club.

Ueo still doing his thing over there, dude still has insane wheel work. I think he will go down as one of the greatest ever for pure technicality and wheel work. Even when he isn't "faster" than other drivers, his car handles as if it is. It is crazy.

Naoki pretty much owning the D1 circuit currently. Naoki has went from being a purely street idol to now being the dominate force in pro, even with Yokoi still driving insanely fast and up level. It's crazy. Lot of the older dudes still doing their thing. Some youth, but in Japan the youth is leaving automotive hobby faster than anywhere, unfortunately. I was supposed to go over there in 2020, but #ThanksCovid.

Jump back in man! Get a car before the prices are just too ridiculous - as they are running out of 90s chassis these days and the price keeps climbing. Thankfully Zs, Rx8, and FRS/ BRZ will help alleviate that going forward a bit... but I don't love them as much as I do my s-chassis hahaha.
