The pace of the narrative is extremely slow and methodical, and there's a shit ton of characters to follow. But the production values, writing, character development, etc. are all beyond top notch. Just be patient and enjoy the ride.

TREME: i quit midway through last season.

it's good but once you let the episodes pile up on your DVR you are doomed. i could never muster up the effort to continue with it.

also steve zahn is such an annoying fucker. you get tired of hearing "it's not new orleaaans man, the real new orleaaans culture" 5 times every episode.

Saw 12 Years A Slave. It was cool. Really puts the brutality of slavery to the forefront of the film, as almost everything fucked up about slavery happens to or around Solomon throughout the course of the film. It's a steady stream too, only giving slight reprieves from the horrible spectacle. It's engrossing stuff - effective. And it hits close to home.

At times the dialogue felt forced. Lines felt spoken and not acted. Produced, as if it were a high school play. It was jarring for me.

Equally jarring was the Gravity-sounding main theme which quickly overstayed its welcome.

But the cinematography was complementary and the performances turned in by the well known actors ranged from serviceable to excellent. Overall, it was good stuff. I might go see it again.

You going to the wrong clubs. Those strippers prolly smell newports and used meth. Post racial strip clubs that scream "Murica" is what we on now. No offense but I can't fathom the idea of a racist strip club owner. What owner turns down a crew rolling 300 deep to a club with racks in hand? That owner is missing out on Noah's Ark. There has to be a movie about this.

I remember being envious of my friends who went to disneyworld because I was too poor.

Finally, I got off the puritanical steez when I realized the intended audience of these shows don't share these views. With said wincest (I despise this in all forms), is despicable, disgusting, and immoral.
I'm disgusted by it unless it's that evil angel movie that I can't remember with Rocco. Absent that scene, I'm disgusted by it, ewwwww.

I don't know about you guys, but this is the type of racism that I can't take seriously. I laughed pretty hard reading this guy's posts. It's 100% ignorant, but it's also so ineffective and so out there that I can't help but derive amusement from it.

The view I usually agreed with dealt with whether or not a character was defined by their race. Someone here made the argument before, but you couldn't make Black Panther white anymore than you could make Captain America (Steve Rogers) black. The race is important for their respective backgrounds. Heimdall and Kingpin? Not so much.

Though as a disclaimer, I'm personally a bit of a purist, so the closer to the comics, the better. But I'm 100% apathetic about the Heimdall casting, so I suppose it varies.

I agree that you gotta take it case by case. Sometimes it doesn't matter, other times it does.

A black Captain America from the 60's instead of the 30's would be interesting I think. They could do something with the Vietnam angle.

I think Steve Rogers sort of needs to be white, though there's nothing explicitly "white" about his backstory, if that makes any sense. It makes more sense for Captain America to be white, his origin being perpetually tied to the 1940s, of course. It's not to the same level of Black Panther, who is the black hereditary king of an isolationist African nation, or Doctor Doom, who has stories depending on him being Roma, or Magneto who needs to be Jewish.
