You know you're allowed to instruct them to not put pickles on, right?
I can't get down like that. It's a million to one getting into the NBA. There are more black neurologists and cardiologist than every one in the NBA. That's not counting the family med docs that outnumber the specialists. Nor engineers, lawyers. For the average person, it's better to go to college and try at professional school. Not to mention how often pro players go bankrupt.Great article. But it doesn't mention the fact that pro sports still produce more rags to riches transformations among black youth. It's not about sports being the only way out overall. But when you're coming from a place with shit school systems and even worse neighborhoods. Sports IS one of the only ways out.
It's hard to go to medical school coming from the lower class.
But overall the point does stand, we need to be looking up to those that made it out. They need to do more to help others make it too, rather than turn their nose and compare their middle class to upper class mobility to those in poverty thinking that they're not working hard enough.

Last I heard, 50+% are going bankrupt within 5 years of leaving the league. Antoine Walker and AI are dead broke. Absolutely nothing to show. I can work as a doctor until I'm 70 with no problem. Not even close for the average man or woman to make that choice.
Pickles are awesome on sandwiches and burgers. The fack is wrong with yall?
Can't you just tell them not to put pickles on it?
How many of those ball players are the kids of other world class athletes? I'd bet on traditional routes of financial success above hoop dreams all day, every day.So are you saying it's easier to succeed in a failing school system and get a scholarship to go to college than it is to focus on sports and pray your good enough to get out??
I absolutely think anyone in a half decent school system coming from lower middle to upper middle class family should make that choice. But in the hood it's hard to excel when so much other shit is going on.
That article does a great job illustrating the statistics. But how many of those black doctors came from money?? Its basically a bootstraps argument all over again.
SeriouslyHow many of those ball players are the kids of other world class athletes? I'd bet on traditional routes of financial success above hoop dreams all day, every day.
It's nice to want thingsI would have liked to see "Membear" as well
Pickles on a chicken sandwich? Pickles are disgusting on burgers (and everything else), but the idea of putting them on a chicken sandwich is weird as fuck.

Pickles are GOAT. My favorite snack

In my 30 years of life, how many of the kids from my high school that were superstars ever made it to a professional sports league. 1.I'm willing to bet that 2nd generation pro athletes don't make up the majority of any sport.
However I am willing to guarantee that 2nd generation or upper middle class to upper class mobility makes up the majority of doctors and surgeons.
I'm NOT saying the article is wrong. But the statistics don't tell the whole story of WHY the youth looks up to these athletes. And it's because of the broken system that produced most of them. Most poor kids won't look up to a dr because nobody from their neighborhood ever made it out and became one. And if they did they probably would never ever think about coming back.
Pickles are wack...

I cannot count the number of lower class kids that went to my high school that eventually got a career making north of 100k. I'm definitely a second gen product, but my best friend grew up in public housing. Had his dad trying to get him to focus on sports, luckily, he got to spend time with my family in vacations and such. Got to see what school could do.
He's making about 150k and is 30. My dad grew up broke as fuck. Makes north of 200k. I know a lot more ppl who fit that mold than hoops dreams/rap game millionaires.
Big asses are disgusting
Pickles are GOAT. My favorite snack
Only two dudes from my hometown ever made the big leagues. Kendrick Perkins and Christine Michael. And them dudes lived and breathed the sport, they were always talking about ball. Christine was lapping everybody back in elementary school, lol.
All the other dudes...nah, b
Was your school a public school in a lower class neighborhood?
My whole point is that until we can actually provide these kids with good education and safe neighborhoods it's hard to sit here and preach that hard work and studying is all it takes to make it out the hood because a lot of luck is needed in both cases wether it's sports or becoming a dr.
I absolutely wish more of our middle class black youth looked up to the educated but the article doesn't seem to acknowledge the troubles of class mobility as a black youth when you're coming from the bottom. Bootstraps isn't the answer.
My school was public and 30% of the class was on free or reduced lunch.
I think this head in the sand attitude towards any suggestion that there are outlook issues in the community is more harmful than "bootstraps" from Gates. The guy is a leader in critical race theory, I don't think he's blind to the other areas of support that those communities need.
I cannot understand why there is always such a visceral reaction to the suggestion that there are some ideas that we should propagate for better results.
It's not an either/or discussion.
Why not both?
he got sonned by a world leader.
You know you're allowed to instruct them to not put pickles on, right?
Bruh, your first objection was that ball creates more rags to riches stories than trying to be an md/lawyer/engineer, which is unequivocally false. My point is BOTH. We should be promoting black youth to look up to the educated black elite but the educated black elite also need to stop looking down on their fellow man and thinking that they're not working hard enough just because they made it out of a second generation middle class home.
The tone of the article just seemed to me like "why are these dumb niggas looking up to these athletes don't they know all they gotta do is study and work hard and they can become a dr and make way more money".
My head's not in the sand. Most of my friends are college educated and have good careers but I know just as many who never made it out because they came from nothing and didn't have the same opportunities I did to pursue a better education for themselves.
You can, but the chicken sandwhiches aren't made to order. They're produced in batches with pickles default.
So if it's really busy you're probably just getting handed one off the line because no one is going to remember that shit and if there isn't a batch ready or almost done, no one is going to drop a whole batch just for you.
Chik-Fil-A was my first job in high school so I really have no patience for that shit lol.
Like I can't go in that thread because I still want to pop off at some of the customers I had way back then and I see alot of the same attitudes represented in some posts.
I mean it's fast fucking food. You're not paying extra for us to set a sandwhich aside and make it exactly how you want it. Just be an adult, take the goddamn things off and gulp down your fried butter sandwhich that you won't even remember an hour from now
Damn breh why you so madYou can, but the chicken sandwhiches aren't made to order. They're produced in batches with pickles default.

I don't think I've ever seen an undiagnosed wrist injury destroy a lawyer's career either....Bruh, your first objection was that ball creates more rags to riches stories than trying to be an md/lawyer/engineer, which is unequivocally false.

Got an interview in a couple days.
Ever since I replaced my ethnic name with a more 'white' name I've gotten the same amount of callbacks and interviews in the past 3 months than I have in the prior 7 or 8 with my government name. And honestly I was looking a whole lot harder before I switched up my name.

whoooaa. good luck.
did you change it legally or just on the resume?
edit: lol nv/m obviously resume, but won't it come up when you get the job?
People really get that mad when pickles are on the sandwich? Take dem shits off and call it a life!
I'm just imagining Retro going into rage fits when he passes a pickle jar in the store or a vlassic commercial comes on. He gets married and his wife is dope, loves him, but has to explain to company his ”problem”. Tells them not to bring up pickles or even make pickle turn of phrases.
My day has been made.
