Apparently coupons and discounts are done raffle-style, so not every member gets coupons every month. Was not aware.

I better start saving for that Lone Wolf and Cub. I liked the Zatoichi stuff, though I've not seen all of them (the 1989 one is probably my favorite though it's not a part of the Criterion set), and if they're in that same kind of vein I should take the time to see at least a couple of the essential ones.

Apparently Shogun Assassin is technically a hodge-podge of re-edited Lone Wolf movies? I think I've seen that, though I can't remember it that well.

IIRC, the first Shogun Assassin film is basically the second film, but with flashbacks that were edited in from the first film. It gets weirder after that, since the sequels were basically just dubbed versions of the following film, so that series only goes up to 5 when there are 6 movies.

I do hope that Criterion does include the first one, since that was pretty much everyone's first exposure to the films and has a lot of historical value as a result. I do think AnimEigo still has the rights to it, so it might be tricky, especially as Criterion has gobbled up so much from them already.

Oh, and if for some reason you don't have the previous Del Toro films, Criterion has your back:

GuillermoDelToro_BD_box_348x490_original.jpg
(Blu-ray version)
GuillermoDelToro_box_348x490_original.jpg
(DVD version)

And in case someone does ask: they didn't get the rights to the book of Short Cuts for the Blu-ray release.

Damn that's an awesome slate. Glad I held off on devil's backbone because I'm totally getting that del toro trilogy. I like the more understated Bluray art better.

I love the Before trilogy and simply haven't gotten into any other Linklater films. The Before trilogy is to me a masterpiece of cinema, and everything else just seems like a weird thing he did. I think Boyhood in particular is an interesting film that gets more praise than it deserves because of how it was made and not necessarily how good it actually is. The movie itself seems to be more about the mother than the actual son, with her misfortune driving the plot.

Think I'll get rid of my del Toro blus just to get them all together in that box set. Gorgeous cover. And yeah, I like boyhood and think it's impressive, but, I'm definitely not enamored with it. The sunset trilogy is my everything.

Would double dip on boyhood probably.

How are Del Toro's other flicks? Any reason to get that trilogy? I really enjoy Pan's

Cronos is a little rough around the edges but overall solid, some like it some don't. It, as always with him, has a great sense of atmosphere and style and just lacks the pace and effortless storytelling of his films to come later. It's a debut feature and it shows, but damn is it a good debut despite the flaws.

But Devil's Backbone to many is still his best film and I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. I think it might be my favorite GTD flick still.

If I didn't own them already I would buy the trilogy, so I'm only in for Pan.

Went in-store to use a coupon I had alongside 60% off. Picked up Strangelove, love the packaging of the thing.

Was going to get Apu Trilogy but bought Wages of Fear instead.

I can tell my B&N stocked up like crazy for this sale. They had two large bins to comb through and a lot of shelf space. If another coupon comes down the pipe I might check back in because I had a handful of things I was considering and I kind of wanted to grab Le Samourai and Z even though they were just DVDs. I love those two movies but don't own them.

Side question. How is Red River? Saw it there. I like Hawks but not huge on his westerns I've seen.

I've never seen the Before trilogy, is it just some long overdue license, or out of print?

What's The Executioner about?

Story about a guy where he's persuaded to become a executioner.

It's Spanish Godfather if it speaks about reviews. Probably it would be choosed by the most Spanish people on theirs top 5 Spanish movies, Top 1 for many (Mine included).

This movie needed more recognition. Great news this release.

Awesome that they managed to get Carpenter to sit down for a bit, and Garris is a better mediator/interviewer than he is a director.

EDIT: And speaking of them, it looks like they're hoping to announce ten new films at Comic Con this week, but it might come down to the wire on a couple of them. Dead Ringers is virtually guaranteed to be one of them.

That's kind of cool, but I'd only get a HGL set as a history piece for horror and exploitation films only. He's an important figure, but I'm good not seeing his films more than once.

I think that Lewis would be and has been the first person to tell you that his films were never any good, but that rarely stops cult followings.

Looks like Arrow is about to lift the curtain up on a big box set of Herschel Gordon Lewis' horror films:
Apparently a dozen (!) films in all.
Oh so that leaked. Wonder if the Phantasm boxset which also was rumoured also turns up.
Not that I'm interested in either boxset, I hope they'll unveil To Live and Die in L.A. tomorrow though. Been waiting for it ever since it was announced at Cannes.

edit: Sweet jesus christ Warner, stop fucking repackaging your films in an increasingly ludicrous manner:

2nd edit (or, the oh my god I so have to have this in my life edit):

Eureka makes such wonderful boxsets.

That looks so much better than the Kino version.

New Arrow announcements, hope you like Herschell Gordon Lewis (UK&US)
(Bride... was previously released in a fancier limited edition)

Um. Great news for fans of Herschell Gordon Lewis? I don't really know what else to say.

I wish Criterion could have somehow gotten their hands on Irma Vep in time for a 20th anniversary release.

I wish Criterion would get a hold of Buster Keaton material so we had a one-stop shop of the greatest silent comedians of all time (plus their work on Lloyd and Chaplin stuff is insane).

in addition, if they did Laurel and Hardy stuff I'd faint. I'm sure the TCM/Criterion streaming service is going to have all these things, though.

I'd like to see Criterion just do more really early stuff, I guess. Louise Brooks, WC Fields, von Sternberg. They handle them so well but most of that stuff comes and goes and are out of print now. I guess sales on that early Hollywood material just isn't that great.

All the Buster Keaton stuff is actually streaming on Fandor now. Most of the Kino stuff is on there as well as the Flicker Alley stuff. I wonder how that's going to work because a lot of Fandor's deals seem to come from companies who are going to Filmstruck.

The Shining is in my top five movies of all time, and wouldn't be caught dead in that shirt. I would love an Overlook Hotel shirt done like a destination t-shirt (like the Last Exit to Nowhere) or a Sidewinder Shirt.

You called that, here are the reveals.

***HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT OF 13 UPCOMING TITLES!***

We just revealed the following upcoming Scream Factory blu-ray releases at our Comic Con panel this evening. Here's the exciting line-up:

1. BUBBA HO-TEP (2002) (Collector’s Edition) – Stars Bruce Campbell and directed by Don Coscarelli.

2 WILLARD (1971) – The rare 70s rat-revenge film is (finally) coming to DVD & Blu-ray!

3. BEN (1972) – The sequel to Willard.

4. BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) (Collector’s Edition) – The original slasher classic!

5. POLTERGEIST II (1986) (Collector’s Edition)– “They’re Back!”

6. POLTERGEIST III (1988) (Collector’s Edition) – “They’ve Found Her!”

7. DREAMSCAPE (1984) (Collector’s Edition) – The fantasy cult classic starring Dennis Quaid and Kate Capshaw.

8. RABID (1977) (Collector’s Edition) – The early Cronenberg classic!

9. DEAD RINGERS (1988) (Collector’s Editon) – Another Cronenberg favorite. Stars Jeremy Irons.

10 & 11. SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE II (1987) & III (1990) double feature. – You asked for it (a lot) so make sure to buy it!

12. THE HOUSE THAT SCREAMED (1970- Rare AIP early “slasher” film!

13. DEAD OF WINTER (1987) – Chilling thriller starring Mary Steenburgen and the late great Roddy McDowell.

Black Christmas is badly in need of a restoration. I'm looking forward to adding a couple of more blind buys to my Cronenberg collection as well.

SF is killing it, but I have to wonder...Where is Phantasm?!?!?!?

They also announced To Live and Die in L.A.! Which I assume is based on the Arrow restoration (and come on Arrow, release it already), otherwise avoid and wait for the arrow release.

There has been rumours about a Phantasm boxset from Arrow. No clue how reliable those rumours are though.

Goddamn, that is one impressive slate from Shout.

Of them, Rabid might be the most remarkable pickup since, IIRC, the rights to that and Shivers were with Lionsgate, who has been the biggest fuckhead when it comes to licensing out to other companies. Whether it's because they no longer have the rights or that Shout has some killer negotiation skills, this is great news for region A Cronenberg fans, and makes me more hopeful that Shivers won't be far behind.

I'm pissy. Spent $40 on the New 4K release Watchmen Ultimate Cut and just found out that the added Blu inside is the Director's Cut and not the Ultimate cut like the 4K disc. Like WTF? The whole packaging builds it up as if the entire set is the Ultimate Cut too. Even in the back it says Watchmen Ultimate Cut: 215 mins, and lists the extras... No mention of the Director's Cut anywhere.

Also, the audio specs are wrong too. Damn incompetent WB. I emailed WB Customer Service to see what's up but I don't expect any sort of answer.

Shout/Scream Factory is really killing it this year. Between Carrie and Buckaroo Bonzai and Bill and Ted and The Thing, now we get the fantastic Exorcist III.

Will include the Director's Cut, never before seen.

Can't wait. Shitty Horror Movies are my thing.

You should see that, Mystery Train, and Night on Earth as well.

Slacker is alright, aalthough I wouldn't recommend someone blind buying it unless they're a fan of Linklater. It has a Twin Peaks vibe with the exploration of a town's weird citizens.

Just watched Night on Earth.

Wow, that was something else. I love how real all his locales feel. Nothing feels set up or scripted, like he just set up a camera in each city and started shooting.

Boy did the Rome story escalate quickly. Loved that the Ghost Dog ice cream man was in the Paris arc. ("Chocolate! Yes!")

Definitely in for Black Christmas. Probably Dead Ringers too.

Maybe in for Bubba Ho Tep depending on extras.

I stopped by the Shout! booth at SDCC and nabbed a copy of Buckaroo Banzai and their next to last poster with it (And met some MST3k folks which was cool). Looking forward to watching it once I finish all this Zatoichi stuff...which should be a good month from now.

Can anyone recommend Region 1 transfers of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and or Die Hard? I think it's finally time to upgrade from my DVD copies...

The Good, The Bad, and The ugly is a bit... problematic. The old MGM A blu-ray isn't very good and comes from an old master. There is a newer 4K restoration blu ray which improves the detail level, but comes with a heavy piss-filter yellow tint and some wonky gamma levels. There is an Italian release of the 4K restoration which doesn't come with the tint, but unfortunately that release isn't English friendly.
The best option still is the newest MGM release.

There is just one transfer of Die Hard, so pick up whatever the cheapest option is
