Last two weeks have been an intro to Tarkovsky for me -Ive only seen Ivans Childhood prior to this month. Last week I saw Solaris and yesterday I saw Stalker (both for the first time in a new 2K restoration, which I assume is what went into the blu rays).
Anyway, Im beyond floored. Solaris impacted me more, but I recognize Stalker as the better film. Nobody makes films like that anymore. A completely transcendent experience. Cant wait to get the blu rays and dive into the supplements (which now that I think about it I guess are also on FilmStruck).

That Apartment release!
Oh my!
Glad I've procrastinated on buying The Apartment for so long.
So the new Swedish edition of Fanny & Alexander for the centenary:
The positives are that it's the full version (previous release was just theatrical), and has extras. But it will seemingly be in 1.78:1 for no good reason and doesn't match the Criterion in terms of extras.
It's progress I guess.

The cinematography for Silence of the Lambs is so effing interesting, let alone its content- its like a mix of television staples in terms of camera movements but then absurd amounts of beautiful creativity and ingenuity for the conversations.
A 10/10 film, truly wonderful in every way. Infinitely rewatchable.

I like watching Magnolia and spotting the rips.
I hate that the german master is about VHS quality. I want to rewatch that movie for years...
There's a lot of fantastic films on it, but I do not like the layout at all.
So just go with Netflix DVD subscription then?
That's always an option since there's still a ton of films not on Filmstruck.

Wish I'd enjoyed Hulu Criterion more, but oh well. I got a lot of viewing done while it lasted.
otoh, it has the non criterion side which is often better. like the shirley clarke series now.

So there is mounting evidence that Criterion will release Fucking Åmål, (well they might chicken out and use the alternative title Show Me Love).
This is absolutely terrific news, it is the best Swedish film of the 90s, Bergman called it a masterpiece, and pretty much anything I can say is still underselling it.
Like there is a (still active!) forum dedicated to the film, there is a book (in English) on it, the film is just a goddamn phenomenon. And it has gotten a recent restoration from the Swedish Film Institute, so it will look a lot better than the old DVDs which were frankly horrendous.
Basically what I'm saying is that you lot better buy this film or I will hunt you down.

Pair of WWI films, Kamradschaft much like then name implies is about camaraderie and the bond that can form during wartime, with a group of German miners trying to save a group of trapped French ones.

That Daniel Blake still makes a nice picture but I find it questionable that they would use that particular scene as a cover. Not that I was gonna give any more of money to that arsehole Ken Loach anyway, but still.

While I wouldn't consider it a spoiler, using the film's pivotal scene as a cover is a weird choice and I think it woul've lessen my appreciation of said scene had I seen a still of it beforehand.
The movie's really great (I just think Loach, as a political figure of sorts, is a cockwomble).

Ah right ok, yeah I understand that. I thought you had an issue with that scene in particular, and I couldn't wrap my head around it.
i dunno if being a holocaust denier counts a political statement, but criterion has again and again proven they have no guiding light when it comes to their canon.
