What is DeathSpank?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeathSpank

DeathSpank is an upcoming action role-playing game by game designer Ron Gilbert, who had been working on getting the game made since 2004; it was announced on January 9, 2008 that Hothead Games would publish the game. The game has been described as "Monkey Island meets Diablo". The game was showcased at Hothead Games booth, with live gameplay being demonstrated by staff, along with examples of story elements, and dialog trees.

DeathSpank's world is cylinder shaped and is rendered without load screens as the player explores its unique goings-on. Gameplay is similar to Diablo, but with more customization, featuring hundreds of pieces of armor and weapons. Advanced dialog options, similar to LucasArts popular Monkey Island series also play a large part in unfolding the game's story. The game is being designed to be comfortable to play in short segments, ideal for more casual gamers, but also boasts over 15 hours of gameplay. Players also have the options of doing many side quests, and hunting for achievements.

The character DeathSpank originated in Ron Gilbert's Grumpy Gamer comics, created by Gilbert and Clayton Kauzlaric. The character was then later developed further. Gilbert and Kauzlaric created a rough design for the game and pitched it to games publishers for over four years without any success.Previously, Gilbert had consulted for Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness at Hothead Games; he contacted them and a deal was made for the company to publish the game. A more in-depth design for DeathSpank was then produced

A's announced that the console editions of DeathSpank will debut on the Playstation Network and Xbox Live July 13th and 14th, respectively, at a cost of $15:

Electronic Arts Inc. and leading independent developer Hothead Games announced today that the upcoming downloadable action-RPG, DeathSpank, will be released on July 13th for PlayStation Network and July 14th for Xbox LIVE Arcade. Gain quests from a colorful cast of characters, and vanquish evil with fast and furious action as DeathSpank scours the world for a mystical artifact. Developed under the direction of The Secret of Monkey Island creator and industry icon Ron Gilbert, DeathSpank combines Gilbert’s unique humor and wit with fast, addictive action-RPG gameplay, making for a hilarious and massive epic quest for justice.

The game puts players in the mighty boots of DeathSpank, the “Dispenser of Justice”, “Vanquisher of Evil” and “Hero to the Downtrodden”. His life-long destiny is to embark on an epic journey in search of a mysterious artifact known only as, “The Artifact”. DeathSpank will feature local co-op gameplay, allowing friends to team up on the same console as both DeathSpank and his trusty sidekick, Sparkles the Wizard. Sparkles’ abilities are magical, serving as the perfect complement to DeathSpank’s weapons-based attacks as the duo battle against the intolerant minions of injustice.

Along the way DeathSpank and Sparkles will rescue some orphans, defeat a local tyrant, help an aging adventurer, and dive headlong into an even deeper mystery in an epic action-RPG that includes collecting loot, solving crazy puzzles, witty dialogue, collecting loot, a ton of weapons, fun and accessible action, and of course, collecting loot.

Thongs of Virtue

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6274256.html

Ron Gilbert's DeathSpank was originally announced as an episodic series, but last month released as a stand-alone downloadable title for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The episodic tag may as well have been left on the project, as Hothead today announced a second game in the series, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, set to debut next month.

Thongs of Virtue will see DeathSpank in some new settings.

While Gilbert left Hothead Games in April, Thongs of Virtue producer Hamish Millar told GameSpot the Secret of Monkey Island creator had just as much influence on this game as he had on the first game. In fact, development on Thongs of Virtue was finished before the first DeathSpank game launched, which works well for those anticipating a sequel, but came with its own drawbacks.

"By doing two games back to back, we didn't get the opportunity to listen to everybody's feedback and try and incorporate that," Millar said. "But what we did do is take a bit of a guess at what we thought was going to come out of the releases."

As a result, Thongs of Virtue will sport more variety in the types of quests given to players, more bosses, a new cooperative play character in addition to Sparkles the Wizard, and a wealth of new environments.

"DeathSpank 1 was an introduction to the universe for people and it was very much a fantasy action RPG," Millar said. "For the second game--and this is a reason it was a separate product, too--we just wanted to redefine what that could be. We just wanted to blow people's expectations out of the water as far as what kind of weapons DeathSpank can have, what worlds he can travel to, and what sort of creatures and characters and enemies he can face."

Screens and art for the game released show more modern and sci-fi trappings, with DeathSpank wielding a bazooka, machineguns and rifles to fend off enemies from giant ants to ray gun-wielding aliens.

As for whether Gilbert's departure meant Thongs of Virtue would be the character's last hurrah, that shouldn't be assumed. "DeathSpank is a creation not just of Ron but a collection of people, and Hothead is a huge part of that," Millar said.

Thongs of Virtue will launch on the PlayStation Network September 21 and arrive on Xbox Live Arcade the next day. Like the first entry in the series, the game will sell for $14.99 (1,200 Microsoft points).

I have been eagerly awaiting this game but sadly the publisher appears to have made a stupid decision for the time being, hopefully it will eventually be remedied.

I am looking forward to extreme absurdity and pop culture jokes mixed with lots of loot. What could go wrong?

Hmm, I need to finish Puzzle Quest 2 and get to level 70 in Blacklight before wednesday. I also need to start playing Nelson Tethers as well. Life is difficult.

Hell yes!!

I can't wait to play this. Unfortunately I won't be able to until Saturday because I have to go out of town for work.

Garnett had some great things to say about it in the latest Weekend Confirmed.

I hope this is awesome. It's been a while since I bought a downloadable game for PSN/XBLA.

There better be a demo on PSN...

For those wondeirng about a demo on PSN

ooks fun but I don’t know that I’ll get it. I like PSN titles and have several but I just got a slew of new PS3 games and won’t have time for this one.
FYI all posts about new PSN titles should include prices upon release. Thanks! I’ll keep this one on my radar for sure tho!!!

Hey guys, Darren and Chris here. Let’s answer some of these questions:
PRICE
$14.99 US Earth Dollars
DEMO
A US demo will be available July 13, the year of the Ratt \m/

CO-OP
Yes, we have 2 player local co-op, easy to drop in or out. Ambidextrous players may be able to play both characters by using TWO CONTROLLERS AT ONCE! Are you man enough? Because we aren’t.
VOICE
DeathSpank’s voice is none other than Michael Dobson, a man so into the role he showed up to work in a purple thong every day. He’s so into the role he insisted we call him “Fleshspank”. A man SO into the role he keeps his children in a homemade orphan bag.
JUNK
It’s so NOT! So yeah… there! Defeat that logic. Try the Junk demo.
More answers soon.

They only banned foreign IPs from adding funds to the wallet, unless you are talking about something that just happened a few days ago that I know nothing about.

I got around this by IP masking on my PC and adding funds through the PSN website, then doing game purchases and stuff from my PS3 as normal. Bought the Gundemonium collection and some random DLC stuff not long ago at all.

Making purchases with already existing funds and downloading free content is totally possible.
