The Division - 15 minutes of new gameplay

Speaking of ubiquitous cover, does the game allow for different methods of play? Or do firefights mostly play out from behind chest-high objects? By different I mean being able to charge in with a shotgun. Since there is no crouch I assume there also isn't any prone, but I guess I understand the decision to leave those out based on it being more RPG, less military shooter.

If you have a high dps shotgun you can run and gun. At least until you run into enemies that are too high to get one or two shot with it.

Eh, not saying that it was made/put in development immediately in response to Destiny. But it seems like some design choices have shifted to go into that direction in order to compete with it.

Not saying its a bad thing, but it seems obvious.

What design choices specifically make you feel that way? The thing to remember is that the vast majority of Destiny's systems are borrowed from MMORPGs to begin with so I'm hesitant to think Massive borrowed from, were inspired by, or adjusted due to anything done in Destiny.

I honestly don't think so either.

It's very clear they've had a vision for this game for a long time. Granted some of the systems are going to be similar because rpg, etc, however honestly the major changes to the game seem to be usability based and not due to some market shift.

Don't know if this is known yet, but I was having an issue with my beta key; so I contacted Ubisoft and got this response:

Thank you for contacting Ubisoft Customer Support. I see that your account is registered for the beta. The codes will be sent to your email on the 26th and are used to download the beta.

So 3 days to preload! (2 for our Xbox brothers)

Can someone give me a brief breakdown of what the loot system is like so far? (variety of loot, shared with others or not, colours of rarity, drop rates & farming, etc.)

I'm most excited for the multi-monitor support...the game could be a bit too...game-y for me, as someone else said, I expected something a bit darker.

Worn - White
Standard - Green
Specialized - Blue
Superior - Purple
High End - Orange

Cosmetic Items - Aquamarine

loot drops are just for you except "public drops" in the Dark Zone

Huh, seems Borderlands really did form the foundation of loot rarity colours. The individual loot reminds me of Destiny though, which has me apprehensive. I hope it's a little more fair than that game.

Blizzard games used that color set well before that(Diablo games and World of Warcraft). Possibly EQ before them?

Not really. If you look at the 2013 demo, graphics aside, they had a really clear vision of what the gameplay would be like. Aside from the scrapped second screen drone stuff, the gameplay looks nigh identical.

Also, this game won't play as much like destiny as people are thinking.

I have been a Destiny player since launch, and Destiny in its current form is a very matured game, and has a lot of aspects, especially during the raid, that won't really be touched on in the division. Super pumped for the division, playing the beta and buying on both PS4 and PC, but those expecting a 1:1 replacement of Destiny will be disappointed.

Destiny is a fine tuned game at this point. Content or no. Kings fall for instance is all about teamwork, timing, jumping, puzzles, weak points, etc.

While The Division had many similarities to Destiny, it is going for something rather different. And it will probably take time for it to mature as Destiny has. And that's okay.

Ugh public drops are fucking terrible.

To be fair, I think public drops in the Dark Zone are a big part of the tension they're trying to build in the game. You're always worried about whether the people you're working with are looking to stab you in the back before you can extract your loot. So being too greedy with it may make them more likely do that just that.

You are already worried about people that are not in your party stealing your loot in the darkzone. Public drops only mean whoever is closest to the loot will get the loot. I don't want to worry about loot within my own damn party it is stupid and turned me off the game big time considering dark zone is where you get the "good loot".

The public drops in the Dark Zone are only for the items you have already picked up from your personal drops in there that then drop as public when you get killed.

You're not gonna open a crate and have a guy grab your loot.

You people are always so afraid of everything! :D

I wonder if my GTX 780 will be enough for this game i think i need to upgrade this year to a 970 at least.

I don't think it's worth going from a 780 to a 970. I'd wait for pascal or try to buy a used 980 Ti if it's just too far out of your budget. I'm also pretty sure your 780 will be fine assuming the rest of your PC is well within recommended specs.

Ah ok that sounds better. :)

Hi guys.

I am making this separate thread because in my discussions with many of you in PM's and some of the general his around the sub is an air of disappointment in the PC graphics that were shown in the recent set of screenies and the small video. I know I will get some down votes regardless from people who think I am trying to cause a conflict, or desperately hold onto the FANTASY regarding how the PC version looks, as if I am feeding a slowly waning PC Master Race Ego. But I promise you I am just trying to inform.

Anyway, here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3o13rh

You look at the footage, and you can tell that there are indeed many parts that look better than Xbox: the LoD/Draw Distance, the resolution, the texture quality. And yet, it still looks.."off". The environments look flat, bland, and washed out. It looks "better"...but in a weird way the Xbox One version seems a bit "better".

Well, looking through the footage, I have realized the technical reason for why this is.

The screenies and video of the PC version had no ambient Occlusion. At all.

Here are some examples:
http://i.imgur.com/pWXFGlw.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/K9UW39Z.jpg Notice the lack of shadowing at the edge of the player's hood, and the lack of occlusion in the corner t the right.

http://i.imgur.com/OMCdUAM.jpg This interior pic is tricky. It "seems" like there is some AO, but it is just normal shadowing in the corner. If there was AO, there would be black shadowing around the edges of the newspaper, and among the ripples of his clothes.

This likely means that the game's default high shadows are VERY good.

There may have been a visual bug in which when attempting to turn on HBAO+, the game build did not fully support game works, and thus failed to use any advanced occlusion technique at all. This would explain why there aren't any of the other game works effects in use in the vids/screenie (TXAA-replaced with non game works SMAA TX2, and lack of PCSS shadowing). Or the effect could have registered, but the layer wasn't rendering, which would result in an FPS drop but no visual gain.

If you have ever played a game with HBAO+ an option (such as AC 4, Unity, Syndicate, Witcher 3, Dying Light, ect) and then turned AO entirely off, you will be stunned by how much of a difference it makes. It makes the game look horrid, even with all other settings maxed out.

AC Unity is a good example of a game with great GI that, when maxed out, looks gorgeous, but as soon as you turn off the ambient Occlusion, everything looks off. (These screens are maxed out AC Unity at 1080p with HBAO+ and no ambient occlusion, respectively)

With AO: http://i.imgur.com/Z9QXqUE.jpg Without: http://i.imgur.com/D2Ipm0H.jpg

I am not trying to be all "PC mustard race", nor am I trying to cause a conflict. I am simply giving those whose hearts sank at the footage a chance to calm down and realize that the only way to truly see what the game looks like on the PC is to wait and play it yourself.

All I am trying to say is, please, please please please don't loose all your happiness just yet. Try to stay positive and wait until the game is working properly and rendering properly on your own screen before you loose all faith.

P.S, if you are like me and live on the east coast of the US, you may be experiencing upwards of 25 inches of snow. What a better way to get in the mood for some dark zone sweeping? :)
P.P.S, In terms of those PC 4k screens...Maybe they aren't so ridiculous after all. Look what I did to an xbox One screen with just some contrast changes, desaturation, and sharpening
Visuals of "After" use this screen for reference:

The UI in that gif was not done in After Effects.

Unless you have poof of your bold claims?
I didn't know this was court and you needed to prepare a case every time you heard/knew something bad about an already shady publisher and wanted to warn people here. The game is not out yet, some people are bound by NDA, and others with access simply don't want to be put on the spot. You don't have to be Ubi's lawyer, if you don't believe him it's ok, move on.

NeoGAF is serious business.

If you're gonna state something like "I heard this." it'd be best to have some sort of credibility, no one is Ubi's lawyer for calling out statements like "I heard this." Just a couple pages ago a user posted "I heard that none of the windows are breakable." I called them out because I know for a fact the game supports procedural destruction.

Not Ubi's lawyer. Don't really care that much. But devs post here too. And if you're going to go around and say negative things about other people on these forums, I feel like the burden of proof should lie with you. It's one thing to say you think it was faked, it's another to imply that you have insider knowledge that it was.

If this isn't the case, then I aslo heard from a super reliable source that the entire Zelda WiiU E3 demo was actually prerendered on a PS4. Nintendo lies. All the time. And this is just one in many cover ups.

See how that type of posting shits up this forum?

Well, not really. Windows are destructible but many things that feel like they should brake are not.

It's not the same thing because Nintendo hasn't lied about that before. Ubi and Massive have.

I was just watching a video of the Collector's Edition unboxing and noticed the watch you get is supposed to be a replica of the one the agents use in-game and saw this:

h7uUP85.gif

and obviously they changed it. I really wish they kept that in now, it looks awesome. Reminds me of the Dead Space UI.

While visually superior, a menu like this is also a nightmare to navigate. Especially considering the game doesn't pause when you enter the menu.

Imagine using this menu on the fly in the middle of a firefight where you want to change gear and ability.. You basically have to memorize the entire menu layout to be able to navigate through it quickly.

For real, seems to have bad usability as a HUD. Looked cute for the reveal video, though.

Yes really. Procedural destruction is heavily supported on a multitude of objects.

It's not the same thing because Nintendo hasn't lied about that before. Ubi and Massive have.
Saying Massive lied about a WIP HUD is like saying that ND lied about TLOU HUD because they changed it during development. It makes little sense. Thing change during development.

Does anyone know if the Xbox One Alpha was extended? Because I've noticed that a lot of Alpha/Betas usually extend their periods by several days. Ubisoft did the same for Rainbow Six Siege, so I don't necessarily think it will only last 3 days.

Really? That's your counterpoint?

Just for arguments sake. When has massive Lied?

When they got on stage at E3 2013 and said "Hey, THIS is our product, you can pre-order it now." Since the part of the map they showed won't even be in it.

Also, when they released this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2NJSAvuiQ0

(Analysis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv5OXQayi2o)

Why is Adry9 even responding when it's in response to Interficium's claim of the UI being done in After Effects? Not your battle, man.
Because the same thing happened to me a few pages ago.

We still don't know if those parts of the map will be in the game or not especially considering they showed more footage of those areas recently. And that video was comparing an engine trailer to a limited alpha. The engine still supports all of those features.

A few bullet holes appear in car windows, what else gets wrecked?

:)

Pro tip for everybody. Dont remove the beta after it has ended. The alpha came back also a week later for a day. To test some extra.
