All outlets got access to the game when servers went live. No exclusive deals to be had.Damn, metacritic average dropped in a big way. Early/exclusive review praise strikes again?

Someone actually actually tried to argue with me that this was a GOTY contender.
Overall media GOTY contender is probably not happening (but those are hard to predict, especially in Month 3/12) but individual outlets or reviewers clearly can still think this is their GOTY.Someone actually actually tried to argue with me that this was a GOTY contender.

For me, it is without a doubt. Haven't enjoyed a game this much in years.

I'm pretty sure that strongblackvine wasn't talking about personal goty so yea....For me, it is without a doubt. Haven't enjoyed a game this much in years.

So did those first few outlets just drop the reviews super fast? Surely it wouldn't be enough time to properly review such a game?

The salt is real.

It also has the inevitable hit of being really early relative to many other GOTY contenders. Not much point in GOTY speculation. There's a Naughty Dog game coming out this year.
Sometimes you think you're experiencing the best thing ever and then overtime the flaws start kicking in or somebody has to point them out and sometimes those flaws either are that bad or hit you that badly.Never understood the concept. I know very quickly whether or not i'm going to like something. The X hours argument doesn't apply to me.
No that's exactly what happened when the Jim review came up. A bunch of people seemingly waiting for the one lower review score as justification for their preconceived notions popped up out of the woodwork. You are also wrong on several accounts here, there is PVP, there are plenty of varied environments, (with varied weather conditions on top), and there is more endgame content than Destiny with even more coming very soon.
It's even worse when literally a page beforehand a guy said literally this exact thing would happen.
Nice insults. I'm not bent out of shape, the dude I was replying to said that something didn't, happen, a thing that was exactly predicted on the page beforehand, I showcased that it exactly did. And using a single above average review out of several very positive ones to confirm preconceived pre-release notions is worth nothing. I would've noted it regardless of the publisher, Speaking of publishers, this game was developed inhouse by Massive Entertainment, not developed at Ubi Montreal. If you got your head out your ass Eden, you'd know some people have been talking pre release about their issues with The Division, that Jim so accurately captured for some.
Nothing wrong with agreeing with him in this thread when he posts his review, just like how people have been agreeing with all the positive ones on the other hand.
In any case, he said it's just an "ok" game which some feel the same about, have no idea why it gets you so bent out of shape..
Oh I forgot it's a Ubisoft game.
That could very well be the case. Some people have been playing 10+ hour/day so it's hard to tell.
Funny that you say that. I chose this over primal because much as I love far cry, this was something different. I played it all day yesterday with a friend for the first time and it's ok... I am going to play it again today with that same friend and if I still don't like it I think I will trade it in for primal. Primal is on sale for $50 next week at best buy, which is $40 with gcu, so it should be close to a straight up trade if I trade it today and buy it next week.
I never take user reviews into any equation simply because anyone submitting user scores does not in anyway shape or form verify that they played the product in question. Not to mention a large contingent of the gaming community's absolute inability to offer critique in anyway shape or form. So "this game has amazing graphics 10/10" or "this game sucks!1! 0/10" are allowed and factored into the scores. Add incredibly childish console favoritism which compels people to put 0/10 just for the hell of it while rating any exclusive 10/10 on principle alone, again there's no moderation or verification needed) and you always have inaccurate scores, even more so if the game is popular or hyped up.Over time on metacritic I prefer the big picture of user review scores to critic reviews. I have found they rank games relatively in line with my views
On that basis this game is well down my to buy list.

Considering that there are a multitude of changes and additions to the actual game, (which is massive compared to the beta, which was an older barebones build), I don't think claims like weak mission design, or saying that the game is as buggy as ACU was at release, (nowhere near that), hold a lot of water. Massive is under Ubisoft but that like stating "you only defend EA games" when someone defends a DICE or Bioware product. It's not pre-conceived notions when a lot of folks got to play two beta's and now have a wealth of footage after release and can fully understand whether the game is for them or not.
Guess what, tastes align with Jimbo's, which isn't a bad review anyway!
Also Massive is under Ubisoft anyway so I don't know what your point is there comparing apples with apples.(Also your rep precedes you with Ubi games)
Either way, I'm glad so many people like it.
Read Jim's review, but I disagree. I'd argue that The Division - at least on PS4 - is very polished for such a big game and comparing it with AC Unity is a bit far fetched. Considering Fallout 4 got 9.5, which was closer to a 6 for me, I'll probably look for another reviewer.
Did Diablo 3 get a lot of consideration for GOTY in 2012? The Division is a pretty standard shooter that does most of the things an Action RPG loot game is supposed to do by modern standards. I think a lot of people are jumping on the overhype bandwagon because Bungie did everything so willfully wrong with Destiny that it really makes the Division look so much better in comparison.
Death matches? You mean its PVP?Rather than just being an action RPG loot game, it does its story telling well and many other things.
I think the difference between Destiny + The Division is that while showing many of the same gameplay mechanics, Destiny focusses on death matches being a focal point in addition to everything else. The Division almost is a single player campaign with the multiplayer tacked on (within the world of course).
But i think The Division has prioritised story and world building, instead of going for the hardcore competition of death matches and that sort of multiplayer.

There was a story and characters? News to me haha. I'm having a blast playing w/ friends but I couldn't tell you a single character's name or what is happening other than I'm shooting looters and for some reason now I'm shooting military guys. Still a fun game, not really bothered by the lack of a story.
Exactly! It is.83 is still a good score.
I said it in the OT earlier but I still stand by what I said.
This game makes a great first impression, which I suspect is what a lot of the early reviews were based off of. Then you start to see all of the typical Ubisoft open world things and it just gets kind of old. The main missions are pretty good and enjoyable, but all of the side missions and encounters are just constant rehashes of the ones you did in another area of the map.
There's nothing completely bad about the game though. It just feels like every Ubisoft open world game, except with the option of multiplayer.
WTH man use the damn spoiler tags...
It's not really that much of a spoiler... In games that have realistic enemies military dudes would naturally be the type of enemies you'd encounter near the end of the game.
No matter how frustrated I grew with the game's semi-indestructible enemies or its repetitive leveling structure, I absolutely could not stop playing. The world was too engrossing, the loot was too enticing, and the campaign was too gripping for me to simply walk away. I stopped caring about the game's flaws after the first few hours and proceeded to lose myself in obsessive stat optimization and cooperative gun battles.
