The Division - Review Thread

LOL yeah I think it's the worst character creator I've seen in years for a AAA game, like seriously, would a bit more options have killed them?

I think Bloodborne was worse.... but it did have more options

Anyway as predicted the games metacritic is going down personally I think the game will end up around 85-82

To me it's an 8.5, a very fun co-op shooter/rpg/ loot game, they did seem to cut some corners with side missions and considering they're basically a necessity to get full wings that's a bit of a let down. For example I did one medical sewer mission and a while later did another and it's exactly the same, i mean the room is the same room but you have a different entrance that's it. That being said the main missions are great fun, I personally think that some missions with multiple factions would be great!

I do think it's funny that people were just lying in wait for a review to agree with there preconceived notions, I mean I get if you played the game and didn't like it, or if you're on the fence and posting to garner impressions etc, but it seems silly to be hating a game you haven't played and have no interest in playing

If your character in Bloodborne looks bad, it's because you didn't tinker enough. I spent an hour and got this:

Meanwhile every face in The Division....ewwwww. I had to restart because female Asian Face 03 looks good in the menu but in-game, she looks like she's a Troll doll. Some of the most horseshit character models I've seen in a long time.

Don't worry. My review that will go up on metacritic (and the average) is going to be very favorable. Just haven't finished enough time with this online beauty to give it a score yet. ;)

Missions are about as varied as far as objectives are concerned. Actual RPG mechanics are up there too.

Pfffttttttt

There is no way you played the witcher 3. I have now cleared the entire West side of Manhattan and there is literally 3 variations of each mission....that's it.

Stop drug deal.....call JTF
Clear area.....call JTF
Clear area.....open door hostages
Roof top..... Activate relays or generator
Grab cases.....move cases
Clear area.....supply drop
Clear area.....Virus data
Echo...locate person

Man....variation....how does it work. It's already so repetitive doing the missions.

BTW....the strategy to all these missions is pew pew......there is none. In fact you can literally make out the directions a mob of enemies is going to come from and just blow everyone up at once to save time....it's predictable as shit. The story oh god....the story in this game? Completely forgettable I don't remember anyone's names. Marked mobs are forgettable because outside of yellow bars they look and act like everything else in the world. There isn't enough variety in the game and I don't believe it will get any better unless massive takes the little step over the reality barrier.

This is why I'm amazed at 9's for this game....it's mediocre at best.

Follow red trail, kill monster with shitty combat at the end. Do hundreds of times, repeat.

I mean this entire post could sum up another hugely popular game. Diablo 3. Weak story check, basic, repeating gameplay, check. It's all about the loot, playing with friends, and switching out perks/skills. These games are def not for everyone

So Jim's review mirrors my expectations.

I don't see the appeal of the game, outside of it being a CO-OP experience. But any CO-OP experience is fun, really.

I asked for a clip showing off a great moment of gameplay in the OT and got no response, and my own search has yet to turn up any results. Bullet-sponge enemies and weak mission design is all I see.

Here you go:

Diablos loot varies enough in appearance and have very unique atteibutes just like borderlands that it makes it serviceable. The division outside of numbers you are basically switching between the same variations of guns the entire time. Going from a mediocre sniper to a badass sniper and......it looks exactly the same unless I put a skin on it.

You did not play the witcher if that's all you think it is.

Bloodbourne faces are bad. Like early 360 gen bad. They shouldn't be this bad. Like I don't get why people don't give FROM more shit for it because this is happening with Dark Souls 3 as well

Well there's gear that changes attributes of skills like 5% seeker mine aoe. Support station speed etc.

I dunno, why waste your time in the review thread of a game you don't like?

That one thing though wouldn't really change my perspetive on it though. Yeah its nicer in those games but it's the gameplay and loot/stats plus the playing with people that pulls me through. Along with the enviroment here, as I don't recall too many rpgs in this setting. Just different strokes from different folks. I had no interest in this game, didn't care for the beta, but love the final product surprisingly.

Interesting responses to Sterlings review. I remember quite a few of his reviews caused much uproar on this forum, especially during his time at Destructoid

I think the gameplay is OK....its not amazing or as smooth as gears of war but it works enough to make it fun with a group of players. I just wish for a loot centric game there would have been a bigger variety of armor and arsenal to use. I'm hoping they put in some really cool stuff....maybe even little more futuristic in the DLC.

I can only go from a M44 carbine to a M44 carbine so many times before I gets tiring

Who are you assuring here? I'm genuinely curious because I assume most who are playing the game have already formed their opinion on it and those who haven't are looking out for it's review regardless of how it affects an aggregate.

a little more futuristic? it's an anemic nyc during a disease outbreak...

I honestly believe I am enjoying this game alot more than I should be.
I have been playing with 3 other friends and goddamn its been a while since we all found a new game to enjoy.
Just being able to logon every night and exploring the city has been a blast and this game is easily a solid recommendation from me.

I probably wouldn't have sunk as many hours as I have, had it not been for them.

Guy sold me on Deadly Premonition. Ended up finishing the game like ten times. So yeah. Much, much love for the man here.

Bloodborne is part of Fashion souls series, therefore cannot look bad. Even if the char creator was meh, you look good with clothing which there was a lot of shit to pick from.

Also, I have no idea where all this "generic environments" talk is coming from. Game is downright stunning and the art-design is about as good as you could imagine considering it's modeled after a real world city. Just a few quick shots I took:

Awesome shots!

Can I ask what image capture software you used? Please don't tell me those are just printscreens lol mine have resulted in garbage resolution. :(

I agree with a variety of Jims opinions but his general taste in games has never really been one of them. He loves games that are below average/average though as he's a big fan of the Dynasty Warriors games.

I generally really dislike reviews that include the .5 or .2 nonsense. The division is one of my favorite games of this generation so far but I'd like to see how Massive builds on it over time.

I also hate the notion that Modern day RPGs don't work because it somehow doesn't make sense that you have to take down an enemies armor and hit points before they die, I don't see how it's any different then when you take a giant ax to the face of human or frail elves in a fantasy game, or how it takes a few clips to kill psychos in borderlands as they are just humans on drugs with some masks on.

As someone who has always wanted an open world Spy/Secret agent game this fits the bill very well and no other dev seems interested in making that game, but people had the same issues on combat with other shooters that put the RPG before the shooter like Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect and the original Deus Ex.

It's a miracle From's doing this good a job honestly. They've rarely ever produced very good visuals and aren't the largest developer, I remember trying to customize a guy's skin in Demon's Souls and I could never recreate a properly natural tone for him again. Just had to stick with this sickly... blueish skin.

People probably give games like this more crap BECAUSE they're AAA games with astronomical budgets, rather than more mid-tier budget games that have a reasonably strong fan base.

Who would have thought breaking down a game to its core mechanics could be boring to some people. It's like some games just don't click for some while its the best game ever for others.

A lot of people seem to forget that this game is at its core a loot grinding game with tactical TPS mechanics to boot. So far the story is serviceable and the game does a good job of being a game. The repetitive nature may not be for everyone but for those who love MMOs then this is your game.

I'm really loving the Division and its easily taken the spot as my loot grind game. Previously that was Diablo but this just one ups that and makes it far more fun. Can't wait for the new content updates to hit and I'll be grabbing a season pass soon for the paid content.

The game is definitely not for everyone and that's OK.

It's not very narrative heavy, the mission design is pretty straight forward and the setting is dry (no spells or lasers).

That being said...

It has a great setting with cool locations, excellent co-op support with easy matchmaking, a very unique approach to competitive multi (Dark Zone) and a bad ass soundtrack. Also a lot of people prefer realistic setting versus fantasy/scifi.

If the stuff at the bottom sound interesting to you then you'll definitely enjoy it!

Pretty much the best way to explain this. Not sure why people have to be so against games just simply because it's not for them nor why can't they understand why people do enjoy them. It's odd.

But doesn't your clothing change as soon as you get some decent gear..... that what I remember, besides looting good clothes is more fun, you can't mess with my shemagh!
Truth be told I barely ever see my face in game so clothing options are much more important.

I was looking forward to this game but am still kinda on the fence, the main thing for me is having some sort of variety in the world and enemies. Like are the different places you travel to unique enough to give you some new and interesting things to look at and do the enemy designs extend beyond the 3 enemy types I have seen so far: Gun toting dude, Baseball bat dude and Flamethrower dude? Also are there any bosses and do they look different to the regular enemies? Even if I have to soft through thousands of generic enemies it is all worth it if there is a unique looking boss at the end of it.

The gameplay and loot system look great but I get bored of repetitive areas and enemies really easily so it would be good if there were lots of enemy type to keep me constantly engaged with how to tackle each different one and at the same time being wowed by the places I get to visit throughout my journey.
