So far i'm loving the game, and it seems to be running pretty damn well considdering my comp. A few annoyances:

+ they got rid of levitation, but diddn't bring wall climbing back...I can see why with the issues of balance and cheaping it on top of buildings etc, but it would be nice to have some kind of "get up to high places" option.

+ the simplification of the weapon system is a bit crap. Havn't seen a single spear or throwing weapon..only blades, blunts and marksman now. Again though i can see the reason behind this, allows for more diverse characters (warriors can take a bit of magic or thievery stuff and vice versa), which are needed because its quite challenging.

+One glitch, whenever i go near someone who has invisibility on, i get some weird interference on my screen - but its not a major issue.

+ I helped a man in Chorol
find his twin brother, then cleared the ogres out of their ancestral mannor and led them down to it. They said all this stuff about rebuilding their lives and making the mannor nice again. I went back to visit them later (after about a week and a half in game time) and the place looks exactly the same, they havn't even cleared the human bones off the floor.
This was the kind of thing that really annoyed me about morrowind, I was hoping that once you help people in quests like this they would actually effect the environment. Although I guess I could give them more time, it hasn't been that long.

All in all i'm having a great time, just had a fantastic fight
in a quest for the mage guild to get my staff, had to fight some necromancers.
I climbed up onto this big rock and hurled lightning down on them....their zombies couldn't reach me so they all summoned ghosts and pelted me with spells. Had to keep ducking behind this outcrop of stone and poping out to trade fire with them. All in all I have found the combat to be quite a bit more challenging than Morrowind.

I'm looking forward to opening up the editor and making myself a cozy mage tower to store my gear. Maybe with some atronach guards. :)

I remember a Q&A session with Todd, and he emphasized that not ALL monsters and treasures are dynamic. A portion of them are, but many items/creatures remain static, regardless of your level.

I don't have the strategy guide, but it should take just a quick glance to find out where all the "phat lewts" are.

dudes the painting quest in chorral
how do i activate the painting? it keeps telling me to get more clues but i dont know where else to look

I fucking love this game. I just got started on the Dark Brotherhood initiation and was about to quit for the night. Noticed a big evil eye a couple feet from the first target, saved the game and decided to go exploring. Killed a couple imps and dinos and had a hell of a time with a warrior fucker, so about to turn it off and tackle tomorrow. Then I decide to put the 78 points I have in Speed to the test. Five minutes later I'm back in the forest under a clear night sky holding some nifty cold resist pantalones. This game rocks ass.

the clues are Painting, Paint Stain, and Painting supplies. The hard one is the stain, its in the dining room (carpet)

I got Oblivion yesturday (Thanks for breaking the street date gameplay), didnt get a lot done, saw a lot of dungeons but pretty much made a b-line for the campaign missions, which i now realise might have been a mistake as i just got into the first gate and am just barely getting through it.

5 hours into the game and i haven't touched a single quest; just been wandering through forests, ruins, sanctuarys, been watching the sun set behind the imperial city from the top of a mountain, seen a hunter chasing a deer (and tried to kill this man, guilty of taking some of the poetry away from the scene) rested in a field near chorral in the moonlight, trying to pick up constellations (sp?) and listening to the music.

Mark your calendars because this is one of the few memorable moments in videogames history.

I'm officially impressed, and i haven't been for years.

In my experience, ghosts are best killed using Flash Bolt or any other projectile destruction spell. most ghosts are invincible against regular weapons.

i just ran outside to the guards... also the blades the ghosts carry can hurt them apparently? dont seem to be magical either.

Can someone confirm for me that if you steal from the mages guild and are subsquently expelled can you rejoin at a later time? I did so by mistake and did not save for a hour and I dont feel like going back. It opened up as a quest that I was kicked out but with no directions on how to redeem myself.

Also can I successfully be part of the dark brotherhood and the theives? You aren't allowed to kill as a theif but of course the dark brotherhood is all about that. Or is it that you can't kill while on the job as a theif?

Kill them all! Turn every single one of them into a soul gem, muhahahaha, that will teach em.

Ran into a strange bug. I just delivered Martin to that fortress and started exploring to the north. Out of the blue my horse (and me on top of it) started hopping up and down rapidly and I couldn't move. I jumped off the horse and I was doing it too.

I saved the game and reloaded and even the loaded save file does this. I'll have to start from an autosave. :(

SteveMeister

Hang out with Steve.
Protip (PC): Use the "save" console command to create named save files. Press ~ to bring up the console, and then enter

save whateveryouwanttocallit

where "whateveryouwanttocallit" is the name of the game save. Press Enter, then press ~ again to close the console.

Shadow -- see if you can fast-travel back to Cloud Ruler Temple. You might have to time it so you bring up the map while you're on the ground. If that doesn't help, try steering the horse to a flatter area if possible. Odd issue though.

Duh, things are going to get more powerful. But, seriously, you can't just do any quest. I've already encountered at least one that won't let you start it until Level 17.

I ran into a quest in Belham that totally kicked my ass. It was a mystery of sorts. Some guy had come into town saying he was a vampire hunter and killed one of the locals (who he claimed was a vampire). Anyhow, I won't give up all the details, but suffice to say I ended up at a cave and my adversary proceeded to kick my ass. Since I had saved it before I ran into him, I loaded my game, shot an arrow at him, and boogied. He gave chase, but must have given up I guess. I was hoping he would follow me all the way to town so one of the guards could dispatch of him because I got my ass handed to me everytime I went up against him.

I guess I will have to buff up first and then go back there and whoop the livin shit out of him

About that quest,

Better reload and this time try to listen in on the conversation between the merchant and the other guy

in my game they were just standing there.. and they notice that I'm around if I get close enough to listen.. I'll just keep trying I guess. He meets the guy every night around the same time, so I'll just keep tailing him :lol

You can lead bad guys to guards to kill. When you zone, wait up for them to zone too before running again. I did it with "family heirlom retrieve mace" quest. Got to end the cave and the boss kick my butt. After countless tries, I just lead him out of the cave and to nearest town / guard.

The "Painter Quest" was a pain too, lvl 4 or 8. I cheated and figure a way with only needing to kill 1 troll. :D

When I first made it outside on the 360 version, I took a severe framerate hit for about 30 seconds. I think it must have been caching to the drive. After that, everything seemed to run just fine.

By zone you mean initiate combat? A guard will automatically attack anyone chasing you?

No. Zoning = enter new area = Loading screen. Get NPC to attack you (get in range most of the time), head to nearest guards / townfolk, and watch them own whatever was chasing you. If you have to zone, give NPC chance to zone also before running again.

You need to go to the Arcane University in the Imperial City. Of course they'll make you sweat for it. Bastards. We had some disagreements about belongings and they told me to get out of the mage guild in Skinard. I guess I didn't fast enough because a minute later the one mage who already disliked me started summoning imps and other creatures to take me out. I just ran, as getting in a fight with the mages in the guild seemed...imprudent.

Dunno if it's region free (I only have a PAL system), but it's 60Hz only (like DOA4).
I'm quoting an age-old quote and I don't know if its been mentioned in this monster thread earlier but..

The back of the box says 60Hz only and there's even a little pamplet in the casing about it. But I'm playing it just fine on my almost 20 year old 50Hz only woodpaneled 4:3 tv (hdtv off on repairs).

Just thought I'd mention it.

Played for about 2 1/2 hours last night, which went by in a flash again, but doesn't seem like enough to really get things done in the game. :D I need a 6 to 8 hour session, but thankfully, the weekend is here! :)

Last night I made it to Skingard, and explored that city pretty well, and I'm nearly done with the Paranoia quest. Kind of fun watching the NPC's go about their day while you follow them around. Makes the Oblivion world so much more life like than Morrowind. I made th journey by foot, and saw some interesting ruins to go back and check when I've got the time.

Notes of Interest:

-Has anyone else found those rock monoliths in the wilderness that have a big rune on them? When you activate it it temporarily gives you a weapon and armor upgrade? I found one that gave me a wicked looking dagger, black with blood red outline, and funky gauntlets that looked demonic. Very cool.

-I have to remember when I'm in sneak mode, as I've accidently been sneaking around and then I click on a person I try to pick their pocket, even when I don't mean to. Then I end up having the guards on my tail. It's kind of fun trying to avoid them though. :)

-I've learned to be careful where I go snooping around. I broke into a house in Skingard, looking to score some loot, and what do I find inside, but three skeletons guarding the place. Didn't expect that, and I'm sure there is something for me to come back and look into when I get the chance. There was a door at the top of the house that had a difficult lock, and I broke the last of my picks trying to get in, so I'll definitly need to return.

-I'm amazed at how great this game is for giving you things to do without having to fight or run a quest. Just exploring around is fun. I barely killed anything last night, a few imps on the road to Skingard, and yet I still had a blast sneaking around, trying new things, exploring, and improving my skills.

Love this game. Can't wait for the weekend to play it a lot more.

Put another 5 hours into it last night, level 10 now. Couple things to mention:

The Paranoia quest in Skingrad was fun, I look forward to going back with another character and giving different responses to see if the outcome is different. For anyone that's finished it,
be sure and go check out the guy's basement after the quest is over.

Trek'd to Kvatch after that. What's up with bandits and other wildlife chasing you forever and not giving up?! I got into a fight with a couple of well armored bandits and ended up having to flee, but much to my chagrin they chased me forever. I ended up running past some bears on the way, so that by the time I got to Kvatch I had 3 bears and 2 bandits on me! I felt like /ooc'ing "Train to Kvatch!!!" I did laps around the camp, letting the npc's take out the people on me, then I looted the benefits.

Climbed the hill to the town proper
and omg what a change in the environment! The Oblivion gate looked fucking AWESOME! I didn't expect closing the gate to take so longer, either. Took me a good hour and a half. Tons of Fire Atrochs and various Daedra. The summoners were the worst, but I figured out I could just go kill them quickly, ignoring whatever Skamp they summoned, and said Skamp would disappear upon the summoner's death. Bastards like to flee, though.

The main boss, I guess you could call him, of the gate was a tough bastard, but he ended up backing himself into the column of magical fire at the center of the gate tower and instantly died lol! Loved that.

This is the greatest rpg I've ever played.

I hate to sound like I just have problems with this game, but does anyone's female character sound distinctly male when she screams, grunts, etc.? Female wood elf character, its been doing this all along but I've been mostly just ignoring it since it's limited to only a few minor voice effects since the character doesn't actually talk. Maybe female wood elves are just more masculine than I imagined? ;)

I've found two of those. Word of warning...if you have a horse, don't try to mount it after getting these upgrades - mounting the horse forces you to put away your weapon and that instantly dispels this particular enchantment. The armor enchantment stays though (until its duration ends).

can someone give me an idea of how the stat multipliers work when you level? I've been playing very laid back so far, just exploring the imperial city and the surrounding ruins to get gold, but in the times I've levelled I still haven't quite figured all the multipliers. It seems to be much more leniant than Morrowind (I've had at least 2 x5 multipliers every level up, something I only got when I planned my skill upgrades in Morrowind), but I can't tell if the basic system is the same (i.e. you can get up to x5 max for a stat in a major skill and x2 for a stat in a minor skill, and multipliers stack for major skills). Anyone know for sure?

aren't those weapons just the "bound" weapons you can get by casting the spells yourself?

If this is what I think it is, there are 9 of them to activate (one for each God). It seems that when you activate these in the wilderness, it also activates corresponding altars in the big churches that let you obtain the same blessings at no cost (from praying, I guess) at any time.

Pretty awesome.

yeah, they say they're bound...but I don't much about what that means specifically since I've only got a level 3 character with limited spell casting ability at the moment. I haven't delved much into that side of the game yet.

You guys are thinking way too much. Just go with it and stop thinking how the game is ruined.

On leveling: Attributes affect skills. To get bonuses on attributes when leveling you exercise those skills (really the beauty of the game for me). So if I want to get a nice bonus on Personality next time I level I will use my merchant and speechcraft skills. If Conjuration is linked to Intelligence and I want to pump Intelligence, I'm going to be practicing my Conjuration.

Most enemies scale according to your level, and so does loot. One of the main complaints about Morrowind was that it was that it was too easy to become so uber-powerful that you could kill anything without breaking a sweat. So in Oblivion, we've worked hard to make sure the game is a challenge no matter how long you've been playing it.

You will still run into some low-level creatures as you go along. Also, it's not always a one-to-one leveling. Some things always stay above your level, others always stay below, sometimes there's randomness to it.

I have a level 40 character with several stats and major skills maxed out, and the game is DEFINITELY challenging even at that level. I prefer it that way, and I think most gamers will too.

If it's too hard, there is a difficulty slider :)

I've never gotten a single 5x multiplier. The highest I've gotten was 3x. :-X

I think it's tied to the major skills that you raised since you last levelled up (though maybe it's all skills?). The governing attribute for those skills that level up gets a multiplier when your overall level is raised.

My major skills are slanted toward agility and speed. I have Security / Light Armor / Restoration / Blade / Speechcraft / Marksmanship / Sneak. Even though that's what I have, I've never gotten more than a 3x multiplier.

Yes, it's true, but I'm sure it wont ruin the game for you. Because while your stats increase affects theirs, YOUR character is always getting better equipped and coming up with new item advantages which ultimately makes you more powerful anyway. It's just a lot more fair now, but you still become 'godlike' for your hard efforts anyway. Just not quite as much as before.

The game is much less boring this way.

I understand that, I just want to know how the stat multipliers link to the skill levels raised. I assume it's simple for the trivial case (i.e. raise 1 major skill 10 levels to level up, you'll get 1 x5 multiplier for that skill), but how does it work for other skills? And how do the multipliers for minor skills stack with multipliers from major skills and multipliers from other minor skills? Steve, are you allowed to give any insight on this?

Cogent, just look on the character profile thing and highlight intelligence. It will show you the skills that you need to exercise. Light armor is not a major for me but I was wearing it in the beginning and getting beat on, so I was using light armor. When I went to level I had a huge +5 bonus to speed which light armor affects IIRC.

The +5 may be a result of extensive muliple utilization of skills that fall under one specific attribute. Steve can clarify.

Also, there are multiple ways to approach combat and so many ways to take down the enemy. If your thief is to weak how about learning some illusion or conjuration and unleash a conjured mother f'er on your enemy.

Or you can learn Restoration and fortify your attributes or fortify your attributes through alchemy or steal fortification potions. So many ways, so open so beautiful. The ultimate fantasy sandbox.

Speaking of the Paranoia quest...I was doing it yesterday and was following the first person when I turned around and this man was "sneaking" behind me. I thought he might have been after my pockets, but instead he "snuck" right past me and into the overhang where my subject was eating. She immediately got up and yelled "What do you want!" He stood up and pretended to be on his lunch break. He drank some kind of beverage before leaving. He then proceeded to the edge of the vineyard where someone was working...the guy never noticed that his pockets were picked.
