The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

Does ENB normally cause stuttering? I'm using this version http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/15105 and it frequently "stops" the game for a second or few. It gets progressively worse the longer I play. Also I can handle the longer load times, however, it took over a minute to load when I fast traveled from Morthol to Whiterun - a city with these problems in general. Any help?

If you disable ENB in-game, does the issue go away? I can't imagine even the most ambitious END settings to have such a performance hit though, unless you have a really weak rig.

Turn off ENB framerate limiter, thats the reason why Your load times are long, if You have nvidia card use nvidia inspector for framelimit instead.

And by stops You mean big fps drops? If yes, You have VRAM problem, You've overextended texture mods. Just write Your PC config please :)

I decided to revisit Skyrim and downloaded a few new mods and yet now my game looks like this...
HNk.jpg

INk.jpg

I tried deactivating/deleting all light mods, to no effect. The second one is clearly a texture problem, so I'm going to start fiddling with that now.

Also my frame rate was around 20 in the first shot, and just over 30 in the second. This is bizarre.

EDIT: Ok, I appear to have fixed the lighting and texture issue by just deleting a whole bunch of .esp's. But my framerate is still in the 20s... I guess I'll just have to keep deleting stuff til I find out what's being so demanding.

Is there a Skyrim mod that keeps your framerate at 30 or so, consistently, at the cost of the draw distance?
I could have sworn Oblivion had one and I assumed Skyrim did too.

In general, it's a good idea to benchmark your rig with Vanilla Skyrim from a standard low-FPS spot like just outside Dragonreach looking over Whiterun, and then start adding mods so you know if you're getting hits on FPS.

HiAlgo Dynamically changes resolution whenever you turn or whenever FPS is necessary, keeping it at high levels.

If you aren't on a system that can downsample Skyrim or do Antialiasing with a high fps, then this mod is for you.

It's a simple file IIRC and you place it in your main folder. If you are using an ENB, make sure you use the injector version, not the Wrapper version. Also be sure not to be running EVGA Precision either, as that blocks it and causes Skyrim not to start up correctly.

If you find you don't like it, removing the file is all that's required to get rid of it.

OK. Thanks man.
I dont know what ENB, injector version, Wrapper version and EVGA mean, but I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Some clarifications: I checked and the FPS limit is disabled in the enbseries file. I have a midend rig (6850, i3 2100, 4GB DDR3) and with SSAO disabled ENB is not much more demanding than vanilla. I have 1 GB of VRAM and AA off so it can't be an issue. I have used the official high resolution textures with no problem before. Finally, the pauses do not feel like low FPS - it's hard to describe but all movement stops but the sound keeps playing. Maybe it is zero FPS, but I don't know what it's like.

Oh, and here's my enbseries file:

I tried the input stuff and only the FPS limit works. Doesn't fix the problem. I've been playing for 8 hours and the stuttering is so bad it's unplayable in Windhelm.

What depresses me about Skyrim is that no mod will really fundamentally change what I found wrong with its mechanics. I remember being very interested in Requiem when I read its description at the Nexus, but where it made combat more difficult, it didn't change how unappealing the game world became to explore after a while. I don't imagine many mods can really make Skyrim an INTERESTING place. You'd have to rip out its skeleton.

Disable ENB on loading screens (shift F12 by default), then toggle back on once you're back in the game. Use a program to monitor your VRAM usage (the more recent ENB DLLs can do this via the gui). The pauses sound like thrashing to me. Do you have a lot of 2k textures installed?

I disabled every hefty plugin (Floral Overhaul, WATER, HD Textures, SMIM etc) excluding the ones that I needed activated to stop it crashing (deadly spell impacts, blood textures).

Still getting 35fps max in Riverwood, which is just not on.

What's your rig like? And I assume this is 35 fps without EnB?

You could always fiddle with draw distances in the menus (turn everything to midrange except for grass) to see some improvements. And what's your uGrid settings in your Skyrim ini?

Have you guys come across any good (and original) helms or circlets/crowns for this game?
Ive checked the Nexus and Google, but suprizingly, I havent really found anything.

Did you actually try requiem though? It's fantastic. It won't change the world, but it changed almost all of the fundamentals of the game. So good. My favorite mod of them all.

Also, why not just through in a few mods that add completely new areas? There are plenty of them out there.

Can you use Frostfall and Ace - Combat Skills at the same time? I don't have Dawnguard so that kind of limits what overhaul mods I can/will use.

Also, I edited some ENB and find it to be pretty much perfect except it starts flashing dark/turns dark sometimes and I don't really know why. Any fix for that? Tried turning off HDR to no avail.
My GPU is GTX 670.

Edit. I think I corrected the flickering by editing enbeffects.fx file but now the colours are slightly worse. :(

So. I need a suggestion.

Wanna play the Game in 1680x1050.
My CPU is an i5-3470k.
My GPU is an AMD Radeon 6870.
And I have 8GB RAM.

What graphical mods can I use while still maintaining about 50-60fps?

I haven't used either, but from the descriptions, it shouldn't be an issue.

I haven't seen any worthwhile enbs that still leave you with solid 60 fps. I've got a i7-920@3.8 Ghz/12 G. Ram/Gtx 680 and even with that I get average 50 fps with Sharpshooter enb, which between that and SuperbEnb are the two best. Though, I do have a ton of texture mods which definitely makes a difference.

Halp!

I currently have Unbleak ENB installed (ENB version 0.119) and I want to switch to another ENB using the 0.139 version. When I open the ENB archive from the official site, there is a Wrapper version and an Injector version. Which one am I supposed to use?

I dunno if its windows 8, but the wrapper version does not work for me. The only one that works is the Injector version. Its actually nice because I can just download the settings, keeping the main ENB files.

The injector version has a file that NEEDS to be running in order for the ENB to work, the other, just requires the enb to be placed in the skyrim directory

They say always go for the wrapper and if it doesn't work then use the injector. I have sometimes tried to use wrapper (accidentally) and I never got it to work.

Man they really need to release a new version of S.T.E.P. Guide. The information is so out of date and is going to be fucked again once Dragonborn comes out.

Is Skyrealism with the Vanilla choice still the best ENB?

Also anyone have recommendations for mods that aren't in S.T.E.P. or GEMS? Lore friendly or non-Lore friendly it doesn't matter to me.

I have tried many ENB's including Skyrealism but Zoners High Performance ENB v2.0 is the I settled with. It works just fine with the ENB 0.139. I tweaked its enbseries.ini quite a lot. Nights aren't too dark, in some caves you might need a torch and the colours aren't as over saturated as they are in some ENBs. Here's my settings:

An update for my low FPS problem - I lowered my resolution from 2560x1440 to 1080p (I was downsampling and thought this ought to be using a lot of VRAM), uninstalled ENB, then reinstalled it and replaced Sharpshooter's ENB with Zoner's ENB. But I STILL have the game stop/drop to 0 FPS at random moments, which people thought meant a VRAM problem. It happens even with ENB disabled so I am afraid it affects my game regardless whether ENB is installed. How do I monitor my VRAM use if programs like MSI Afterburner (which I use when it works) or EVGA Precision make Skyrim crash?

These are the ENB setting in-game; I hope the VRAM data is useful cause I don't know what it means:

The STEP Guide has in it to use Sounds of Nature-Redux, but that mod is no longer available, what is the recommended alternative to use?

hey guys..

i just installed Skyrim from Steam, and i understand basically nothing about mods... so, what should i do, not even bother? is the vanilla version good enough, or are there some mods that are just essential and i pretty much have to install them? i don't want anything that would change the original vision of the game, but maybe something like more realistic water or something.

i browsed some of the mods on Steam and there's just a ton of stuff, crazy stuff like musician bears and what not... it feels kinda intimidating trying to find the essential ones. so some recommendations would be great!

also, are they as easy to use on Steam as i think they are, just download them and they are incorporated into the game right away?

Core mod means it's essential to the STEP "experience", it's a vital mod.

The install order is generally in the order you need to install them, except where it doesn't matter. For example, the Texture Pack Combiner is a mod that picks and chooses the best environment textures from the three conflicting HD texture packs you get before it, so it's vital to install in that order.

By the way, get some interim testing done prior to installing the HD packs to ensure a 60+ fps in Whiterun etc. because the HD textures will definitely have a performance impact.

Better Beast Tex isn't part of TPC, so it doesn't matter whether you install it earlier or later.

As for whether Skyrim GEMS work with STEP, they're basically drawing from the same source except that STEP is more selective, so it's something to be done on a case-by-case basis. Use a mod manager and stay alert at installation time to messages that say the mod is overwriting another. That's your interference.

And while manual installation is no problem, why would you not use a mod manager? Much easier to install/uninstall...if you want to return to a vanilla Skyrim install now (not that you need to since these are patches), you'd need to have a backup Vanilla Data directory or get it again from Steam.

I'm probably just being prideful, but I just built this new PC so I think my PC should be able to handle it.

I'm almost done with getting all the STEP mods loaded. I'll get those done tonight. I'll then move onto the GEM mods I want and then I might be able to actually play this soon.

They pretty much work that way yeah. It is a step in the right direction that Steam is now recognizing Mods and having them on their storefront, but the fan made mod managers are still much more useful tools.

If you are going to stick with Steam, I'd recommend going to

http://www.skyrimgems.com/

and picking out the ones you want and finding them on Steam.

If you are being a little bit adventurous do what I did and get the S.T.E.P. Guide and follow that. It is a formal structure for setting up your mods with games but it can still be a little bit overwhelming for some people. From there I'm adding mods from Skyrim Gems I like (many are already in the S.T.E.P. guide).

I'd recommend the Nexus Mod Manager if you are going this route.

I haven't used the Steam Workshop, Skyrim Nexus has more mods and they seem to be more up to date

I recommend using Mod Organizer for your mods. It's really easy to use and what's great is that you don't have to manually delete any of the mods as they don't go to Skyrim's Data folder but in Mod Manager's own Mod folder. That way you don't have to guess if that file belonged to mod A or mod B when you want get rid of some mod.

I tried using Nexus Mod Manager but Organizer is much more hassle free.

SkyUI for a more PC friendly ui

A Quality World Map - With Roads Map that shows roads, is better than the vanilla map which doesn't show the roads.

Then the official HD texture pack from Steam.

Those 3 are the best mods that don't alter the vanilla game too much but makes the experience a lot better. Also, always read the mod's instructions before downloading, using the mod.

How do you get that config in game? I've seen screens of it and I can't find out how to do it.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it was clear, but I do use ENB. I need something to check my vram usage since all the options I try crash the game at the main menu with ENB on.

Shift + enter but it only works with ENB ver. 0.139 and later.

Do you guys not like Wrye Bash? What is good about NMM and Mod Organizer?

I haven't used Wrye Bash but Organizer is good because it doesn't install any files to Skyrim's Data folder and because you can easily download mods from Nexus just by clicking the Download with manager -button. It also has a web browser which you can also use to download mods from Nexus.

It is just so easy to use and it also has a dark colour scheme which is always a plus! :D

thanks for the help Trojita and Atruvius.

hmm i think i'll just install the HD Texture pack for now.. i'll play the original version for a while and then try some mods later if i feel like messing around with weather or something.

Hmm. The ENB config I uses tells me to use an older version. Is there harm in updating the ENB if the config doesn't use the latest?

I'm not sure, but I'm leaning on yes. You could test it though. I am using ENB that was for ver .126 which is unavailable now and it works fine on .139. It most likely depends on the version you are upgrading from.

We'll be here to help you if you want to delve into indepth modding later on. Is this your first time playing the game?

I'd definitely recommend getting the unnoficial patch for Skyrim and any of the DLC's you might own. It fixes a lot of shit Bethesda never fixed and will probably never fix. The other thing I'd recommend especially if you are using a KB+M setup is SkyUI like Atruvius mentioned. You'll need to have SKSE (Skyrim Script Extension) installed and setup so that the game runs from or with it to use SkyUI. It is a tool that allows certain mods to have better scripting abilities within the game.

Download link for SKSE is:
http://skse.silverlock.org/

Copy the two .dll files and the .exe file to your Skyrim game install folder

Launch the game by running skse_loader.exe.

If you use a desktop shortcut to launch Skyrim normally, just update the shortcut to point to skse_loader.exe instead of TESV.exe or SkyrimLauncher.exe and then exit the game.

If you launch the game from a shortcut in the start menu, update that shortcut.

You're talking about 0.143 right? Also, I posted about my problems in the Nexus Forums so they will probably solve the problem before you all will. One last bit of information I neglected is my load order:

0.139 actually. Didn't know there was a newer version? I found a link to the preset on another forum so I just went with it.

I'm giving up on ENB - I completely uninstalled it and the problem are all gone. I'd rather have a working game than a spruced-up next-gen filter. I think I even like vanilla Skyrim's graphics.

lol I'm still trying to set up my game.

I got through STEP and got all the way down to Gameplay Mods on Skyrim GEMS and now I'm kind of kerfluffled.

I already added a bunch of mods to change races, perks, combat, etc., but now I see Skyrim Redone which seems rather comprehensive in all the things it does and I don't know whether I should use it and whether I need to disable other mods.

Do you guys not like Wrye Bash? What is good about NMM and Mod Organizer?
I use Wrye Bash in conjunction with NMM. NMM is great at one-click installing and uninstalling mods, plus Nexus integration (I never use Steam Workshop mods) but Wrye Bash is great for reordering mods for maximum compatibility through BOSS, and of course, the Bashed patch.

Just a note, with SKSE, you also need to drop the Data\Scripts from the zip file into Skyrim's main folder along with the DLLs and skse_loader (and merge the Data folders from the zip with Skyrim's Data folder when Windows asks you).

You don't need to use the Data\Scripts\Source folder unless you're a modder.

Hmm. The ENB config I uses tells me to use an older version. Is there harm in updating the ENB if the config doesn't use the latest?
Well, the older ENB might not use the newer ENB features as well, and looking at the change notes, the newer ENBs might even have changed the day/night detector thing. The latest v0.144 adds compatibility for those older ENBs, but haven't tried them out yet.

Has anybody tried the EnB manager here?
