Did anyone catch Todd Howard's talk at DICE? The week after Skyrim came out Bethesda employees had one week to do anything they wanted and put it in Skyrim. They showed a video of some of the creations and it looked awesome!

Horse combat, spears, GIANT mudcrabs, dragon mounts, Build your own house, season changing, and more. Really neat stuff.

Video is around 21:00 in his DICE keynote

MIND BLOWN.

I really hope we see some of this as DLC.

Holy hell, that video was insane. Just imagine what they could've added if they had delayed the game for a few months. Dat water shader. :(

Also, Todd Howard is my hero. If you're reading this, patch in a way to get rid of the compass on console versions. Come on, bruh.

I hope this stuff comes out on the Steam Workshop soon. Seasonal Foliage is something I've been wanting for so long. Oh baby.

Spell Combinations too - that's just smart thinking.

I'm so glad I held off on my PC playthrough and recently finished up on 360. This is going to be magical.

I'm watching the video end to end right now; great stuff. Just got through the Jam Week sizzle reel. Lots of great stuff in there, but one I really wish was in Skyrim: dark dungeons. A couple with no natural light at all. I went through the game hoping to run into them.

If a fraction of those ideas make DLC, holy crap. 0_o

Neatural Lightning fixes this. Its on the workshop. To me it gets too dark though

HAHA! Last night I realised how awesome Lightning Storm is! I killed two bandits and a dragon in one go. Then I went underground and killed five of the upgraded Falmer in one go. The spell basically melts health bars and turns people into ash piles. It's very win. I'm like a Sith Lord wearing Daedric Armour. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

We all know that article about what Zelda could learn from Skyrim, but that video shows Bethesda also learned from Zelda. Fire and ice arrows, dungeons with moving platforms, horse mounted combat, etc. Yea that isn't unique to Zelda but Zelda does already do those things. I definitely see a lot of that reel showing up in expansions.

Trying to decide what sort of character to make in Skyrim. (360)
...
I really hate the progression/creation system in Skyrim.
Skills without perks are USELESS. If One-handed skill would increase damage by 1% every skill point, having 100 One Handed would make you competent fighter. Current 0.5%... well, not much point in raising the skill without perks. And One Handed (and Two Handed i think) are among the best skills without perks, great many others are completly fucked without perks.

Lack of speed attribute (stamina and sprinting are no substitutes, i cannot strafe-sprint) makes weak but fast characters impossible to make, limiting possible play-styles a lot.

I'd like to play either combat-stealth mix or a pure mage or stealth-mage mix.

The mage is out of question due to Skyrims incredibly boring and limited magic. I cannot make my own spells... Dual-casting is only useful for Illusion (increases max level affected) and Destruction with Impact perk as others do not benefit from it really (double duration is hardly useful) and dual-casting gives only 10% bonus (for each spell, ie total 20%) at 40% more magicka (80% for since you cast two spells). Very efficient. I thought magic in Oblivion sucked due to Spell Effectiveness and skill requirements to buy some spells but that system is great compared to Skyrim's (And Morrowind's is even better).

The nightblade is out of question since the game lacks the spells i need for the playstyle and/or requiring so many perks invested in Illusion i'm not going to bother. Command, chameleon do not exist and some genius moved paralysis to Alteration. Calm spells are fine but require way too many perks to be affordable and effective at higher levels.
There are no disintegrate nor damage etc over time effects.
I suppose a mage who sneaks around could work (ie still uses other schools normally as well) but as i said, the magic is so boring in this game...

And combat-stealth mix. Back to perks being the true skill. I need One-Handed (assasination, weak enemies), Block (bash and disarm), Archery (dragons, harder enemies), Sneak (assassination, all perks, duh), Pickpocket (i'd be a thief as well). I can get every one i need, just about (i make assumption 51 (ie 50 perks) is the maximum i get as i do not use other skills really).
But to make this truly effective and more interesting and closer to my vision of the character (roleplaying), i also need Speech's trading perks (not haggling though) and Alchemy (almost every one), for poisons.
I suppose i could throw Enchanting and Smithing to mix as i'd like to make some weapons and jewelry and maybe even armor (though i mostly play without armor).
Not only i cannot get every perk i need, i need very high level to gain most of the important ones.
Playing with "scaled-back" character is possible (barely) but i need many skills so that i won't get bored. I have played up to level 20 with sword'n'board warrior but since i focused purely on 3 skills (One Handed, Block and Light Armor) i got bored.
If i take a few perks only from every tree, i get so sub-optimal character there is no point playing.

I suppose i have to get a new computer and double dib Skyrim so that i can mod the game to be like i'd like it to be. Hell, the current system doesn't need much to be fine, just make pure-skill to be more useful in general and perks being just extra.

Now to wonder how much i can scale back my idea but still being fun and varied. Alchemy can be thrown away as i hate picking flowers but i'm going to miss poisons. I could get rid of pickpocketing but being a mere burglar...
And before you ask, no, i cannot make two characters with each focusing on different things. I have tried that but i really want to play somewhat jack-of-all-trades character. Until the game gets better magic system, more spells and spellmaking.

What is the best way to raise enchantment?

Enchant iron daggers with Banish with petty soul gems. Or if you don't care about money, enchant iron daggers with any effect with petty soul gems.

It barely does anything. I've thrown things into walls which bounced back into my face, heard the pain grunt but didn't notice a drop in my health. It's such an expensive spell to use that I've never tried it during combat.

Ah but if it can turn a NPC hostile... well, i won't need Archery then and the rest of Alteration spells can come handy.

My current build uses 7-9 skills and goes over level 50... hmm...

My game is completely fucked after the patch (360).

I just started "Hard Answers" and now I can't, well do anything. I can't talk to quest characters, use forges, etc.

I tried clearing my system's cache, but I have no other ideas. 120 hours down the drain it looks like :(

Loading another save?

Yeah, tried that too, saw this posted as a bug on the wikia site.

Problem is, I was only keeping 6 saves and don't have one before entering a certain area. My game is totally broken now :/

Oddly, if I try to wait when near a quest character ir says "you cannot wait while someone is asking you to leave".

Man, I hope they fix this, my wife loves this game, even if we're just crafting. No way I'm starting over without finishing it or getting one of my skills to 100.

What is the best way to raise enchantment?

If you are fine with creating a thief character, i.e. leveling up pickpocket, the best way to raise enchanting is to learn from Sergius Turrianus in the College of Winterhold. Learn a level, pickpocket the money back from him, learn again, pickpocket again, etc etc.

If you are not investing any point in Pickpocket though (which is something I advise you not to do), you can only do this up until level 51 enchanting--well, if you don't want to lose money, that is. The gold requirements from that point on is 1500 and up which is impossible to take back using pickpocket without point investments.

Also, make sure to keep an eye for weaponry with banish enchantment, although I believe it only appears when you're level 30 or above. If you see a merchant selling one, make sure you do everything in your power to obtain it, even if it means reducing your 8000 gold to a mere 300 or less. The banish enchantment is the one that will give you the biggest ROI for enchanting and selling--the second best, Paralyze, is not even close.

The reward for Azura's star will also help somewhat, although not strictly necessary.

I have 100 pickpocket can I learn past 51? I think I'm mid 70's now and it's a time consuming process.

I have a two-pronged question here, but both are related. Once I get my enchanting to 100 I want make a daedric bow and dagger. My smithing is already at 100 and even showed 101 at times. Is there any benefit to using the Fortify Smithing potions and Fortify Smithing enchanted clothing during it's initial creation? Does that potion/enchantment combo only work during the improvement process? How many times can I improve the weapon after it's been created? When I enchant my clothes for weapon and armor improvement do I need to use a Grand Soul Gem? I want the best percentage increase possible for each item of clothing. I was going to use an apron, ring, I already have Elven bracers that give me a bonus, and possibly boots or shoes and a hat if it will let me.

Once the weapons are created I want to enchant them and I'm working my way towards the dual enchantment. What are the best enchantments for a bow and dagger, and is there a way to never recharge them?

Bought Skyrim during Steam seal with a coupon. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I got a question though, how can I tell how much penalty to movement speed and stealth my equipped armor has? I have not put any points/perks into either light nor heavy armour so I would like to know if I can combine/mix different armor parts to squeeze out a little more armor without sacrificing too much speed/stealth, if at all possible.

The end of the Thieves Guild questline involves
returning the skeleton key
. I really don't want to do that if it means
that I will lose the item forever. Is there a way to steal it back? It makes lockpicking so much easier

Oy, not sure how that one slipped through :P

but no answer to my question? :( I guess I'll just have to experiment a little... or maybe rephrase it; does equipping any piece of heavy armour make me unable to stealth or can I equip a few as long as I keep the total weight under a certain number?

Heavy armor obviously protects better than light armor, but at the expense of being heavier in terms of carrying weight and giving a penalty to movement. The movement penalty lessens as the skill goes up, and the Conditioning perk eliminates both drawbacks. However, heavy armor is also noisier to move in than light armor, so it always adds a penalty to stealth. The Silence perk of the Sneak skill eliminates this drawback, as does the Muffle spell/enchantment. The weight and movement penalties can also be compensated with the Steed Standing Stone, so it's a possible alternative until the Conditioning perk is achieved, or replaced entirely if the player does not wish to spend a perk point.

Blast, thanks. Looks like finishing the Thieves Guild quest line will be the last thing I do in the game then. Does the reward for finishing it outweigh the usefulness of this item?

It depends how you're playing the game. The
Twilight Sepulcher
isn't the end of the TG story. If I remember correctly there is
Nightingale Armor and Blade and special perks you can choose
as a reward once the
Twilight Sepulcher
mission is completed. My lockpicking is high enough, and I have 99+ picks that it doesn't even seem like an issue anymore. I don't think I've put any skill points into lockpikcing either.

I was warned not to do it by a friend. The Skeleton Key is a better reward than the quest completion power.

So I stepped off of Shadowmere and he shot away at light-speed and crashed into a cliff a few hundred meters away.

...

Same thing with my horse. I thought it was because I was next to a cliff and we clipped into each other, but its happened pretty often.

So who has done a No Dragon/Main Story Line playthrough?

Let me give you guys some background as to why I'm asking. When I first got Oblivion, someone on a messageboard made the suggestion that the game is a lot more fun if you never get the main story rolling. When you step out of the sewers you do not start with the storyline. Essentially this causes the Oblivion Gates to remain closed and you can just go around and do sidequests/etc. I played the game this way for about 60 hours and had an absolute blast. After I started the main quest because I wanted to complete it I realized just how much more fun the game was without getting pestered by the damn Oblivion Gates all the time, and the Oblivion Gates part of the storyline blew ass anyway.

Fast forward to Skyrim, the Dragons are triggered similarly to the Oblivion Gates. You have to get to a certain part of the storyline (finish Dragon Rising) and they start spawning after this. The difference is that the dragons are actually pretty fun to fight. After my first playthrough I decided to do something similar in Skyrim and do a no dragon/main story line playthrough. Removing the shouts and dragons really makes for a different experience. My second character is 100% rogue/thief and I'm having a blast exploring the world uninterrupted. Combat is now a bit different because my character is a bit weaker than my prior battlemage, and now doesn't have any shouts to fall back to when in trouble. I'm at Level 30 now without doing any of the main quest and without spawning dragons.

So has anyone else tried a "no dragons/main quest" playthrough of Skyrim? If so, what do you think?

Honestly, I never found the skeleton key useful. Lockpicks are cheap and plentiful enough in the world. I usually have over 70 in my inventory. Plus, you can start picking master lockpicks from the start anyway.

You're forgetting the most useful aspect of it-it doesn't reset to the 12:00 position when you fail.

So, I'm working the Civil War quest line (having wrapped up the Companions, I think). I just chased down a courier, and was in the process of heading back to base camp (on the northern coast) when a snowy saber cat approaches. I hit hit with Ice Form at the same moment it leaps at me. I turn around and see it's vaulted a good 100 yards into the horizon, disappearing over a hill. This pleases me, I was on a mission.

A short time later, I come to a fort blocking the road. I usually just go around them unless I have reason not to, and begin to do so here. Then I take an arrow in the back. Turning, I see it was a Stormcloak who shot me.

That will not do, at all.

I maul him quickly (this new ebony fire mace is pretty nifty), and enter the courtyard of Fort Dunstad to see what kind of infestation we have going on. Turns out it's a pretty bad one - Stormcloak scum all over the place. I tag one with Frenzy, and he chases me outside, along with a friend of his. Soon enough they're fighting, and I'm sitting back smiling at the bloodshed.

One by one, more and more Stormcloaks pour out of the gates and join the melee. As they circle around the combatants, I hit the entire pack with Frenzy (gotta love that area effect), and they all go apeshit. Now I have eight Stormcloaks and two horses in a big scrum beating each other up. I like to think of it as a metaphor for what the Stormcloaks are doing to Skyrim.

My money is on the brown horse.

Hehe, this game is so much more enjoyable when you actually role play a little.

Havent played in 2 months to the day. Dec 9 was the last time my save hit. Ps3 kept crashing with 82 hours of played.

Played for about 2 hours straight today and had absolutely no slow down. Everything I've tried is working out real well. Took quite long to get this patch though.

I have 100 pickpocket can I learn past 51? I think I'm mid 70's now and it's a time consuming process.

Unfortunately, the Sergius guy can only train you up to 75, since there is no Master level Enchanting trainer available in the game. You have to do the rest the hard way, sorry. And do you actually invest the skill points in Pickpocket line? Just having it 100 without investing in any of its skills, IIRC, will not allow you to pickpocket money above 1500 gold or so. Also, I realized that there's a point in my previous post that could have been misunderstood by you due to my stupid wording: I actually advise you not to invest any skills in Pickpocketing. It's fun, yes, but serves no real purposes in the end--better spend those points elsewhere.

No, the potions do not affect the initial creation. The strengthening effect of those potions (or Fortify Alchemy/Smithing enchantments in apparels) only affect the improvement process.

Yes, Grand Soul Gem is required to get the best percentage possible. If you do not wish to utilize the Restoration Potion glitch, then the best "legal" way to obtain the highest percentage possible is through the combination of Alchemy, Enchanting, and Smithing. With enchanting, create an Alchemy/Smithing "power-up" gear, and then use that gear to create stronger enchanting potion, and then drink that potion during enchanting yet another Alchemy/Smithing "power-up" gear, and so on and so forth. It's a tedious process, in all honesty.

Do note, however, that there is an armor cap of 567 (80% physical damage reduction)--it is basically useless to create armors with higher value than that. Also, you only need one Grand Soul Gem to apply two enchantments at an apparel--they must be applied at the same time and items already enchanted cannot gain additional enchantments.

Also, you can improve your armor/weapon as much time as you like, although this is a waste of resources and if your current skill is no different than the last time you improved the equipments than it will have no effect at all.

Once the weapons are created I want to enchant them and I'm working my way towards the dual enchantment. What are the best enchantments for a bow and dagger, and is there a way to never recharge them?

Well, depends on what kind of character you are playing. Paralyze is very popular for bows (and for good reason, especially when paired with the 15% paralyze skill from 100 Archery) as is Absorb Health/Stamina.

Yes, there is a way to never recharge them, but only for specific enchantments such as Fire/Shock/Lightning or Drain effects. For these, they are associated with the Destruction skill, so if you are using apparels with four 25% Fortify Destruction effect stacked with one another, you don't have to recharge when you use weaponry enchanted with those effect.

Also, do note that the amount of times you can use the 2nd enchantment effect is entirely dependent on the amount of times you can use the 1st enchantment, so it is advisable to put the weaker enchantment as your 1st enchantment so you can get more uses from both enchantments.

If you do not know about it, the quest line Azura's Star also reward you with an unbreakable Soul Gem. This can help you in various ways, such as a much easier time getting Grand level souls (just find bandits or random npc and kill them), and it can also help you leveling enchanting (use an enchanted weapon, use the azura's star to recharge it, use it again, repeat ad nauseum)

Aaand I guess I should just throw it in here: do not make the fortify sneak/lockpick enchantments for your apparels. They're bugged (although to be fair I don't know whether they're fixed on the latest patches or not)

Hope this helps :)
