Some Dawnguard/Hearthfire material may be spoilery
Now they've done it. Those knifetoothed bastards have crossed the line. Maybe when I sent their leader to Oblivion for his insane plot to put out the sun, I underestimated their desire for revenge, but never again. Taking a much needed break from building my home, I wandered back to Fort Dawnguard to see how my compatriots were faring in the absence of Harkon and his minions when Florentius Baenius ran scrambling to me, collapsing at my feet. "She's gone! They've...they've taken her!"
"Who?" I ask, helping him to his feet.
"Your wife. Ysolda. The vampires have her."
Awash with shock, fear, concern, I eventually settled on blind fury. "Where!?!?" I demand.
"S...Silent Moons Camp. They have bandits guarding the entrance."
I turned and stormed back out of Dayspring Canyon. It's several moments before I hear the familiar steps behind me. My traveling companion. I turned my head briefly. "Serana..."
"Shut up, I'm coming too."
"Thanks."
We made good time, but eventually we were forced to stop for the night. My thoughts were of my new home. If the vampires had captured Ysolda, what had become of our new daughter, Lucia. Had she survived the loss of her parents and a move to a strange place with new family just to be killed by vampires? Or worse... Children were rarely turned, but I could think of no greater delight to a vampire that wanted to hurt me. And what of Rayya, my housecarl that had taken up stewardship of my manor? For a moment I thought I should try for home, to see if they had survived. I knew Serana wouldn't leave me to check on them. She was obviously worried about my mental state. I made my decision. If my daughter and housecarl were dead, detouring to my home couldn't save them, but any delay could prove fatal for Ysolda. I drifted off a few times only to wake with a start a few minutes later.
I could barely make out Serana's silhouette far from the campfire, utilizing her keen eyesight to keep watch. It was funny, I barely even thought of her as a vampire anymore. I had asked her once if she wanted me to help her search for a cure, but she seemed to be hurt by the suggestion. In spite of everything she's been through, I think she likes being a vampire, she certainly doesn't seem to mind feeding on animals, and I had to admit, her abilities really did come in handy. The look on her face made me realize that she probably had a better idea of what the vampires might be doing to Ysolda than I did.
At the break of dawn we started out again. We reached Silent Moons Camp around midday. I had been here before, searching for lunar forge weapons. I tried to recall the layout. Then off to the left, too close for my comfort, a bandit stood up and staggered inside a small stone shelter. I raised my daedric bow. My pride and joy. I smithed it myself, honed to perfection, and double enchanted. I gave it no name. It is simply silent death. This nameless thug had the honor of being the first recipient of my vengeance. He fell quickly, quietly, not even alerting his compatriots. The second bandit also fell without a sound, but one of his allies witnessed his collapse, and shouted the alarm. Serana leapt forward, drawing the bandits with her spells while I picked them off. All except the last. An Argonian mage. He dodged my arrows with a deftness I had not expected. Serana fell to her knees at his onslaught, but as he closed in to finish her, I finally landed an arrow. He stumbled only for a moment, but that was all I needed. A flurry of arrows later, and the Argonian was dead. I ordered Serana to wait outside, she tried to argue, but conceded that her injuries made her a liability.
That was only part of the reason. I slipped inside the camp's interior, and pulled out the real reason I wanted her safely away. Auriel's Bow. Combined with the Sunhallowed Elven Arrows that I kept after finishing off Harkon, these should be more than a match for the vampires inside.
It was beautiful. The caves were too narrow for the bloodsuckers to dodge the explosions of sunlight with each arrow's strike. When finally I faced the vampire leader, he fell to his knees with a satisfying crunch. I put away my bow and slowly approached him. His look of smug defiance turned to horror as he saw me draw the instrument of his death. Dawnbreaker. I wasn't a fan of the Daedra, but you had to admit, they made good stuff. Unfortunately, I had neglected my swordplay for too long. As I swung what I thought would be the finishing blow, the vampire darted at me, quicker than I thought possible. I used my shield to shove him off of me and swung Dawnbreaker as hard as I could. This time he didn't even try to dodge, he just stood there and smiled as my blade removed his head from his body. Even as it rolled to a stop it continued to smile, blood glistening in his pointed teeth. My blood. I reached for my neck, and sure enough, I felt the gash. I was infected, and in my haste to save Ysolda, I forgot to stock up of potions to cure the disease.
Ysolda.
I rushed to the anterior of the structure and heard her crying for help. I broke through the door and found her, a few bruises but otherwise unharmed. She hadn't been bitten. She told me of how they came for her. She was outside, tending the garden when one of them said her name. She greeted them warmly at first, but when she saw how many and what they were, she ran inside and bolted the door. Rayya insisted on fighting them off, but Ysolda forbade her from throwing her life away. She ordered her to take Lucia and hide in the basement, covering it with a spare rug just before the vampires broke the door in. She offered them no resistance as they covered her head with a hood and forced her to march away.
We stumbled out the entrance and into the afternoon sun. Serana ran to us, smiling at the sight of Ysolda on my arm. Then she saw my wound and the grave look in her eyes must have matched mine.
"Whiterun isn't far from here, love," Ysolda offered, desperately hopeful. "We'll get you there before you..."
"Can't risk it. If I turn before we make it, I'll go after the first person I see." I turned to Serana. "You know it's true. Get her home, as fast as you can. Don't stop for anything. If you see me in the dark, don't hesitate."
"I won't. I'm sorry." She took Ysolda's arm and pulled her away.
I started off for Whiterun at as brisk a pace as I could. My limited healing magics were no match for an elder vampire's deathbite, and the wound refused to close. A Sabre cat thought that a bleeding man would be easy prey. I few clumsy swings of my sword sent it off to learn from its mistake and I continued toward the vague silhouette of Dragonsreach in the sky. For a time it seemed as if I was making no progress, but eventually I saw the gates in the distance. The guards raised their weapons, unsure of what to make of this bleeding stranger until one of them recognized me. I managed a weak smile and collapsed in front of the gate.
I awoke in the temple with Danica Pure-Spring smiling down at me. I thanked her for her help and explained that I had to see if my wife had made it safely home. Danica helped me get to the wagon where the driver agreed to take me home. I arrived, a bit ill from the jostling ride and not fully recovered. Outside, Rayya was mending the door, and Lucia ran up to meet me, concerned. I assured her i was fine and half afraid, asked where her mother was. Before she could answer, Ysolda burst through the door, to the annoyance of Rayya who was still trying to hang it properly, and ran to meet me. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I knew what family was like.
Late that night, Serana and I stood on the outlook above my library. "This isn't over, you know," she said. "They've made it their mission to make you suffer any way they can."
"I'll be ready. They invaded my home, attacked my family, tried to turn me into one of them. You're right. This isn't over. It won't be until I've killed so many of them that any thought of action against me is considered to be suicide. I won't let them hurt my family again."
"And what's the alternative?" Serana asked. "To become like Isran? Obsessed to the point of the exclusion of all else? Is that the man you want to be for your family?"
"I guess I'll need you to stick around and make sure I'm still human."
"Well you've picked the right vampire for the job."
