The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim |OT2| Team Edward's Revenge

I finally bought Skyrim last week.

I've been doing the Stormcloak rebellion (up to the second fort now) and a few other quests, but nothing major. But it just doesn't feel like I'm progressing at all. I'm still using the steel armor I found one hour into the game, still using the steel greatsword. I'm currently at lvl 14 I think.

Any tips on how I should progress? Any specific quests I should do to make me feel like I'm actually doing something?

One of the faction questlines might be beneficial. If it fits with your character, I like the Companions as a good faction questline for low level characters. You can find their mead hall in Whiterun.

So I had been having some freezing issues. I deleted a bunch of save files, cleared the cache, uninstalled the game etc, and it seemed to be working a bit better. The game still froze if I had more than one save file, so I was keeping to just the one so I could play the damn thing for more than five minutes at a time. I just loaded up the game and it froze as soon as it had finished loading my save. Thinking this was odd, I reloaded: same thing happened.

So tell me, am I completely fucked? This is the only save I have and I'd rather not lose the 100+ hours i've put in.

So, I adopted Lucia in Whiterun and finally go to Riften to see about rounding out my family. I open the door to the Orphanage to see....all the kids in their underwear. What the fuck kind of operation is this? Needless to say, I didn't adopt any of the kids...

I hate to say it, but it sounds like a corrupted save file...

Try starting a new character, saving, and then loading it. If it loads okay then it's probably that one save file that's screwed.

A friend I know owns this game (console version). He's played around 100+ hours of the game but suddenly his character has become bugged where he is way shorter than anyone else in the game, besides children. The model has literally shrunk down for no reason. Even the armor seems ill-fitting and it looks like the size of a 14 year old kid. Unfortunately, the save file that is still normal is from way back in the game progress (over 50 hours).

Is there a fix for this? The worst part is it makes it hard to see stuff high on shelves.

Maybe he became Dwemer! badumtish
You know it feels like they lost a huge opportunity here. Imagine this scenario.

The Dovahkiin goes back to adventuring after building a manor for his family. In his absence, he fails to learn that the speed and skill with which he built his home has attracted a lot of attention. After selling some loot in town, he is approached by a courier. Once again, the Jarl of Falkreath summons you. The Jarl and a group of merchants and property owners who were until recently residents of Helgen have heard of your abilities. To be blunt, they want the Dovahkiin to rid Helgen of the bandits and then rebuild Helgen from scratch. You could choose from a number of styles of various costs and complexities. You could have an open and inviting town, or awalled up fort to protect the people from further dragon attacks. You could even put in special structures to attract individuals like yourself that could protect the town in times of need. Perhaps an Arcane tower that works in concert with the College of Winterhold. Or a barracks for new initiates to the Blades or Companions to train and spread their influence. I could even see an underground fighting arena with skylights for the citizens to view the combat. So many possibilities.

Maybe I'm still bitter about not being able to rebuild Kvatch.

I sure hope Bethesda is paying attention to this post... Would be a great option in The Elder Scrolls 6: Back to Morrowind

In all seriousness this would be a dope move, take note Bethesda!! Build on this house -err...building!

Maybe he became Dwemer! badumtish!

Dwemer are the same size as regular elves. :(

Couldn't resist, sorry bro.

Almost done with the Imperial questline, then I'm gonna head onto Dawnguard. Creating a nice bit of an in-game legend by summoning Odahviing to aid me everytime I'm part of an attack group on a Stormcloak camp. There was a 'red dragon of the Empire' in the game Redguard, and now there is again. :lol

If you hadn't said it I would have. I expect that if the Dwemer ever return, a lot of players are going to be surprised that they aren't the stereotypical dwarves.

I think that's part of the reason they're hardly ever referred to as "Dwarves" in-game. Mostly they're called "Dwemer", and I remember a few cases of them being called "The Deep Folk" or something like that.

I hope the bring them back. I want to see some heavily bearded elves running around.

Dwemer comin', yo.

By the way, here's something interesting that I figured I might share with you guys. Before Oblivion came out, Michael Kirkbride released this document: a loveletter from the Fifth Era. Don't take 'loveletter' too literal, though. It referenced some stuff that turned out to come to pass (like the coming Fourth Era and the Scathing Bay, which is what's left of Vivec city), so it's definitely very interesting.

Reading it might also cause your brain to leak.

What is everyone's favorite place/location in Skyrim?

For me, its the tundra of Skyrim. I love Whiterun Hold, and the city of Whiterun is my favorite place to be, especially for doing my mod reviews.

Although, come to think of it, Solitude's dock/sawmill area is really cool too.

lol, there are now 5 of Louis Letrush outside Whiterun... they're like the agent Smith of Skyrim. I wonder if there will be more in the future.

Favorite singular location was probably Eldergleam Sanctuary. I did the quest there pretty early on and getting to where it opened up was probably my biggest 'ddaaaaamn' moment of the entire game.

Another favorite would be up on the hill to the NE of Whiterun at nighttime, looking over the town. Looks so great.

Markarth is probably my favorite town. I love the waterfalls and the architecture, although the layout is a bit convoluted for practical purposes.

That happened to me in my last playthru.

MISSION: pickpocket Louis Letrush.

Which was impossible because one of the 5 was always staring directly at me...
"Need something?" "Need something?"

I tried everything I could think of at the time- pushing, using barriers, various angles of attack... eventually I took a swing at him with my bare fist.

My posse then brutally attacked each Lois Letrush in what I now call 'The Battle of Louis Letrush' - which could only be described as the greatest massacre of Louis Letrush in recorded history.

I hung way back hoping for a surviving Louis Letrush, or at least a loophole about picking a glitched guys pocket after he was dead but no luck.

There were no winners at the Battle of Louis Letrush.....

I kinda wish I'd continued to explore the Letrush saga on my game. Maybe I'll go back an tag'em with Frenzy.

Escorting one across Skyrim, on foot, to reunite with his family was epic.

Question: if you buy the Hearthfire DLC, and start a new character, how long does it take until you can access it? Other than money, any hoops to jump through?

I'm a lvl33 high elf mage, 136 hours in and have yet to start the main quest. No dragons in my Skyrim so far. I feel like I'm getting nowhere strength wise. In bigger battles I always end up running around, summoning atronachs and waiting for my mana to recharge. One or two hits can be enough to kill me. I don't have any followers, because they'd get in my way, when I cast the destruction spells.

I really wish I went the thief/assassin route this time.
Is it still possible to switch with console commands and would that break the achievements?

Hah. I meant to trigger it. I did find a stone quarry just now, which is new, and grabbed some. Though now I'm wishing I hadn't forged some iron stuff and sold it.....

I do think you need to be leveled up a bit since the letter from the Jarl mentions he's heard of your efforts. Level 10-ish maybe?

I'm a big fan or Arcwind point, probably my favourite location. I always go there early just to pick up the trojan looking imperial helm.

The tundra is probably the best large location though, however I found it strange that they didn't put anything interesting on the little mountain that sits on its own.

Got all the hearthfire achievements today, that's easily the glitchiest piece of content I've ever played, something went wrong with EVERYTHING. Frankly, I'm amazed I got the achievements at all.

Some Dawnguard/Hearthfire material may be spoilery

Now they've done it. Those knifetoothed bastards have crossed the line. Maybe when I sent their leader to Oblivion for his insane plot to put out the sun, I underestimated their desire for revenge, but never again. Taking a much needed break from building my home, I wandered back to Fort Dawnguard to see how my compatriots were faring in the absence of Harkon and his minions when Florentius Baenius ran scrambling to me, collapsing at my feet. "She's gone! They've...they've taken her!"

"Who?" I ask, helping him to his feet.

"Your wife. Ysolda. The vampires have her."

Awash with shock, fear, concern, I eventually settled on blind fury. "Where!?!?" I demand.

"S...Silent Moons Camp. They have bandits guarding the entrance."

I turned and stormed back out of Dayspring Canyon. It's several moments before I hear the familiar steps behind me. My traveling companion. I turned my head briefly. "Serana..."

"Shut up, I'm coming too."

"Thanks."

We made good time, but eventually we were forced to stop for the night. My thoughts were of my new home. If the vampires had captured Ysolda, what had become of our new daughter, Lucia. Had she survived the loss of her parents and a move to a strange place with new family just to be killed by vampires? Or worse... Children were rarely turned, but I could think of no greater delight to a vampire that wanted to hurt me. And what of Rayya, my housecarl that had taken up stewardship of my manor? For a moment I thought I should try for home, to see if they had survived. I knew Serana wouldn't leave me to check on them. She was obviously worried about my mental state. I made my decision. If my daughter and housecarl were dead, detouring to my home couldn't save them, but any delay could prove fatal for Ysolda. I drifted off a few times only to wake with a start a few minutes later.

I could barely make out Serana's silhouette far from the campfire, utilizing her keen eyesight to keep watch. It was funny, I barely even thought of her as a vampire anymore. I had asked her once if she wanted me to help her search for a cure, but she seemed to be hurt by the suggestion. In spite of everything she's been through, I think she likes being a vampire, she certainly doesn't seem to mind feeding on animals, and I had to admit, her abilities really did come in handy. The look on her face made me realize that she probably had a better idea of what the vampires might be doing to Ysolda than I did.

At the break of dawn we started out again. We reached Silent Moons Camp around midday. I had been here before, searching for lunar forge weapons. I tried to recall the layout. Then off to the left, too close for my comfort, a bandit stood up and staggered inside a small stone shelter. I raised my daedric bow. My pride and joy. I smithed it myself, honed to perfection, and double enchanted. I gave it no name. It is simply silent death. This nameless thug had the honor of being the first recipient of my vengeance. He fell quickly, quietly, not even alerting his compatriots. The second bandit also fell without a sound, but one of his allies witnessed his collapse, and shouted the alarm. Serana leapt forward, drawing the bandits with her spells while I picked them off. All except the last. An Argonian mage. He dodged my arrows with a deftness I had not expected. Serana fell to her knees at his onslaught, but as he closed in to finish her, I finally landed an arrow. He stumbled only for a moment, but that was all I needed. A flurry of arrows later, and the Argonian was dead. I ordered Serana to wait outside, she tried to argue, but conceded that her injuries made her a liability.

That was only part of the reason. I slipped inside the camp's interior, and pulled out the real reason I wanted her safely away. Auriel's Bow. Combined with the Sunhallowed Elven Arrows that I kept after finishing off Harkon, these should be more than a match for the vampires inside.

It was beautiful. The caves were too narrow for the bloodsuckers to dodge the explosions of sunlight with each arrow's strike. When finally I faced the vampire leader, he fell to his knees with a satisfying crunch. I put away my bow and slowly approached him. His look of smug defiance turned to horror as he saw me draw the instrument of his death. Dawnbreaker. I wasn't a fan of the Daedra, but you had to admit, they made good stuff. Unfortunately, I had neglected my swordplay for too long. As I swung what I thought would be the finishing blow, the vampire darted at me, quicker than I thought possible. I used my shield to shove him off of me and swung Dawnbreaker as hard as I could. This time he didn't even try to dodge, he just stood there and smiled as my blade removed his head from his body. Even as it rolled to a stop it continued to smile, blood glistening in his pointed teeth. My blood. I reached for my neck, and sure enough, I felt the gash. I was infected, and in my haste to save Ysolda, I forgot to stock up of potions to cure the disease.

Ysolda.

I rushed to the anterior of the structure and heard her crying for help. I broke through the door and found her, a few bruises but otherwise unharmed. She hadn't been bitten. She told me of how they came for her. She was outside, tending the garden when one of them said her name. She greeted them warmly at first, but when she saw how many and what they were, she ran inside and bolted the door. Rayya insisted on fighting them off, but Ysolda forbade her from throwing her life away. She ordered her to take Lucia and hide in the basement, covering it with a spare rug just before the vampires broke the door in. She offered them no resistance as they covered her head with a hood and forced her to march away.

We stumbled out the entrance and into the afternoon sun. Serana ran to us, smiling at the sight of Ysolda on my arm. Then she saw my wound and the grave look in her eyes must have matched mine.

"Whiterun isn't far from here, love," Ysolda offered, desperately hopeful. "We'll get you there before you..."

"Can't risk it. If I turn before we make it, I'll go after the first person I see." I turned to Serana. "You know it's true. Get her home, as fast as you can. Don't stop for anything. If you see me in the dark, don't hesitate."

"I won't. I'm sorry." She took Ysolda's arm and pulled her away.

I started off for Whiterun at as brisk a pace as I could. My limited healing magics were no match for an elder vampire's deathbite, and the wound refused to close. A Sabre cat thought that a bleeding man would be easy prey. I few clumsy swings of my sword sent it off to learn from its mistake and I continued toward the vague silhouette of Dragonsreach in the sky. For a time it seemed as if I was making no progress, but eventually I saw the gates in the distance. The guards raised their weapons, unsure of what to make of this bleeding stranger until one of them recognized me. I managed a weak smile and collapsed in front of the gate.

I awoke in the temple with Danica Pure-Spring smiling down at me. I thanked her for her help and explained that I had to see if my wife had made it safely home. Danica helped me get to the wagon where the driver agreed to take me home. I arrived, a bit ill from the jostling ride and not fully recovered. Outside, Rayya was mending the door, and Lucia ran up to meet me, concerned. I assured her i was fine and half afraid, asked where her mother was. Before she could answer, Ysolda burst through the door, to the annoyance of Rayya who was still trying to hang it properly, and ran to meet me. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I knew what family was like.

Late that night, Serana and I stood on the outlook above my library. "This isn't over, you know," she said. "They've made it their mission to make you suffer any way they can."

"I'll be ready. They invaded my home, attacked my family, tried to turn me into one of them. You're right. This isn't over. It won't be until I've killed so many of them that any thought of action against me is considered to be suicide. I won't let them hurt my family again."

"And what's the alternative?" Serana asked. "To become like Isran? Obsessed to the point of the exclusion of all else? Is that the man you want to be for your family?"

"I guess I'll need you to stick around and make sure I'm still human."

"Well you've picked the right vampire for the job."

The key to playing Mage is to reduce your mana costs by wearing the appropriate robes and jewelry. Leveling your enchantment to 100 allows you to apply two enchantments on a single item. By doing this you can greatly reduce the cost of any two schools of magic of your choice. Of course you can also loot items that reduce costs or provide more mana.

Also, level Alteration to gain the ability to cast better magical armor.

When playing as a mage it's really helpful to have a companion tank for you.

What? The fucking things will run in front of you and protect the enemies from your spells.
At least that's my experience. In all gamebryo games with companions, regardless of class or method of attack.

I'm playing as a summoner and with one tank (Argis the Bulwark in ebony armor) and a Dremora Lord, I have plenty of time to sneak up behind the enemies and stab them with a conjured blade or unleash some lighting. I only really notice the bad companion AI in narrow corridors. Outside and in larger rooms they work fine.
Man, I've been seeing a lot of dragons in this playthroughs. I encounter one circling overhead almost every ten minutes, it's insane.
That's the reason I avoid the main campaign.

So I transported nearly 14,000 pounds of loot from all my major houses to my new home. I just used whirlwind sprint + summon Arvak outside the city gates then fast travel. It was still horrible, it took me 4 or so hours to store all my accumulated loot. I've got so much junk I need to sell.

Learned that the hard way on my first character. Second character, sold everything, had money.

I like having a mage follow me around- since the AI has AMAZING AIM.
I can't hit anyone in a real combat situation with an ice spike or it's equivalent for beans, however the right AI follower can just go bonkers with both hands.

Actually, something I've found to be amusing- since I never use staffs I pick any follower and load them up with nothing but the bad-ass staffs you collect (it works best if it's your spouse as you can buy all their default stuff out of their store so they will just have what you give them including clothes) and then all they do is blast the crap out of stuff with damn fine accuracy.

I'm playing through as a ranger/summoner so it's just entertaining to me to have my npc circling around nuking anything that moves with various uber-staffs while I raise up dead bodies and call up atronachs.

Another perk of this (besides the crazy go nuts wildness of big battles) is that every now and then you recharge all the staffs which levels your enchanting pretty fast.

So sick of all the glitches in this game now, this game should have been receiving a lot more patches (and preferrably without breaking more stuff like 1.02 and 1.03 did, and that stuff was never fixed either). Finally took the time to go through the boring Civil War questline, only for it to glitch out at the end during Battle of Solitude.
The Jarl and whatever-his-name second in command won't attack the two Imperials, and those two are invincible.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I tried console command 'setessential' on the three IDs that matched her name, but that didn't do anything. I can't just kill
Tullius
either because he's invincible as well. Also caught some endgame spoilers trying to dig up a solution. Lovely.

I can just hear the outrage in this post. I never use the NPCs either because they always piss me off. This really made me laugh though.

I can't think of a single positive experience with a NPC companion on any TES or Fallout (3, New Vegas) game.
(Well, i don't have any positive experience with companions in FO1 either, the dog run in front me and i hit it...)
The AI gets stuck on stuff, alerts enemies, hits me, i hit it or something. Nothing good ever comes from them.

It's mostly the weapon and item sets being "dwarven".

that's exactly what led me to think that lol!

i just figured they were regular small dwarves. but I didn't even stop to think that the armor fit like all the others.

maybe i thought it was just made (and not worn) by dwarves

I don't have that many negative experiences with the companions in Fallout: New Vegas or Skyrim, really. They're not that great (especially when it comes to avoiding traps), and Barbas nudging you around is enough to drive me crazy, but all in all, they're fine.

Is your most common playstyle some sort stealth character? Because i can understand not having bad experiences with the AI if you're not. But otherwise...

I remember this great thing in Morrowind, someone had deviced excellent follower script, making sure they never get lost or stuff like that. But even those break, a script broke and left my companion completly non-responsive to anything but following me.

In Oblivion, well, i seem to be recalling companions trying to attack unreachable enemies, had to kill them myself somehow. And of course any NPC followers were generally pain in the ass, getting in the way etc.

In FO3, the darn dog got itself killed. Otherwise the companions worked somehow because they were immortal... but it didn't fit the feel of the game to have a companion around. IMO.

In New Vegas... well the fucking AI insists on running in front of me constantly. Well written, interesting characters who are dumb as fuck.

And Skyrim repeats every issue.

Dammit.
Now i want to play an Elder Scrolls game again. Morrowind maybe, new computer with TurboBoost processor, i might actually get some decent frame rates on some areas with mods this time.

What would be really nice is if you could tell an npc how to act generally: 'Hang back and try to pick people off' 'Go for the main guy and don't stop' 'Cover me' 'Watch my back'

...and they'd, you know.. do it....

That was one thing about DA:O I really liked- making your posse function how YOU wanted it too, not random 'step in front of you', 'block your way' 'do exactly what you don't need them too' stuff

I mean, orders and commands are a good step forward- but some overall "HERE'S WHAT I NEED FROM YOU" settings would be really nice.

Good point, I'm not. Pure sword and shield. I carry a bow with me and lately I've been getting a lot more stealth kills, but then again, I stopped using Lydia by the time I hit level 20 or so.

I'm gonna buy the PC GotY edition when it comes out, and install a mod that slows down your leveling. Because I'm level 50 and I haven't even started the Dawnguard questline yet.

I went through Kagrenzel for the first time last night. Holy shit what an entrance. :O

Which one is that again? There's one to the east, in the mountains, that's apparently something really special, but I've never found it in any of my playthroughs. :lol

EDIT: Looks like that's Kagrenzel. Time to go looking.

I was sent there to find Dawnguard's advanced crossbow schematics, but I hear the quest location is a random dwarven ruin? Anyway, it's definitely worth a look.

I still haven't fully explored Blackreach with this character, too. :lol Last time I was there I was so encumbered with loot that I just skipped the central structure and the battle with Vulthuryol. I'm heading to Mzinchaleft soon, might as well take the elevator down and go and kill a dragon.

By the way, I'm amazed at the roads in this game. I don't use fast travel, and this playthrough I've been ignoring compass markers as much as possible and just following roads when I want to find stuff. There's paths to pretty much everywhere, and there's often a lot of cool stuff near them.

Don't worry, once you hit 50 it slows down on its own....

I've been level 60-63 on my main character for months.

That's exactly the thing. I'm level 51 now, with most of my main skills already at 100. I'm not gonna start using magic just to gain levels when my character's been a badass sword-wielding Nord all the time. Leveling a bit slower would've been nice.
