I wish sword damage was dealt in accordance to whatever the tangent (and to anything along the arc of the swing, not just one thing/point) of the hit is.

Sorry for another question. Just wondering, any reason why I can't use anything buy petty soul gems to recharge my weapons? I don't see an unlock route in the skills paths that allows for the use of different gems (common etc).

Wiglaf Stark | Nord | Level 25
Approx. Playtime: 54 Hours

I don't think I've done more than half of the main story, I've been doing nothing but sidequests and exploration, having an insanely fun time in Skyrim. This is definitely my GoTY and I'm not even done! I still got 3 major cities to visit, lol! You'd think that at 54 hours I'd be done, the truth of the matter is that I hardly quick travel, I go everywhere by foot (when I have Lydia following) or by horse. I've quick traveled on a few occasions just to finish the quest and call it a night, but I generally just walk around for no good reason other than to sight see. Occasionally I'll venture into an undiscovered cave. =P

A few minor things or issues that some players may overlook:

- You can zoom the 3rd person camera! Hold R3 (click right thumbstick and hold), then change zoom with the left thumbstick by going up or down. I initially looked this up because the game 'bugged' me into a very close 3rd person perspective which got a little annoying. The same controls work for the horse as well, which oddly enough I do prefer a closer zoom when I'm riding my horse.

- Praying to Talos gets rid of your diseases and gives a boost to shouts cool down.

- Rocking Wolf Armor, this armor is beast (no pun intended). It's a heavy armor unlocked once you join the Companions, I believe. You can get it at Skyforge very cheaply. It's heavy armor but it's surprisingly light. An "Exquisite" Wolf Armor right now (with perks in Heavy Armor as well) is giving me a rating of 100 armor with only 20 lbs of weight. The rest of the pieces are 4lbs each and give 40-50 armor rating! Looks sleek, great armor:weight ratio, and lets me carry more stuff. I mention this because I hardly hear anybody talk about it on other forums. I plan to keep upgrading it. I'll eventually switch once I see the game kicking my ass, then I'll probably start the upgrading process again.

- I was looking for a matching shield for the Wolf Armor and the Branded Iron Shield looks like the best choice. But why can't I upgrade it? I can upgrade Steel, Elven, and Drwarven all to "Exquisite" but not branded iron armor? I don't really understand.

- Yep, Giants will kick your ass. I accidentally hit one with an arrow while aiming for a dragon. After the dragon died that behemoth chased me to hell and back. I went through all my health potions before it killed me for good, lol. Same goes for bears, tough beasts those are.

- Daedras are devilishly entertaining.
Talking dogs and all.
I made the mistake of selling a Deadra artifact, got something like 500 gold for it. When I changed my mind and wanted to buy it back it was a whopping 2000+ gold! Hold on to those! :p (Same goes for the Dragon Priests masks, which I sold as well.)

- No matter how far I go into Skyrim I seem to always come back to Whiterun. I guess I made it my home base of sorts. I always like to travel between Whiterun and Riverun for the shops and stuff.

- Am I the only one that actively avoid nights? Skyrim looks so much better in the day.

Anyways, Skyrim is still consuming my soul! Unfortunately I'll have to give gaming a rest after Thanksgiving break because I have to prepare for a course I'm giving this December and January and it's going to take all of my attention. In February I'll resume with Battlefield 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. This generation has truly been gaming Nirvana for me.

Use the workbench where you upgrade apparel in order to upgrade the shields.

Well, scaling has finally catched up to me. Playing a pure mage (destruction/conjuration/restoration), level 28, and the second Companions quest where I have to fight
Silver Hand
soldiers is raping me like nothing else in the game before. Including bosses and dragons. I try to play it strategically from afar, but my frost atronarch gets killed in 2 seconds and one arrow from their archers means instant death for me.

People warned me that mages are broken, but I guess I thought I could beat the system.

Did you trap any souls in your other gems?

In Oblivion the first two hours were pretty straight forward. Go here, take this letter and meet my friend, he'll help you, and then after that I couldn't figure out where to go. I kept getting quests, but couldn't figure out where I was supposed to go to continue with the story. After about five hours of being lost I gave up. :/

Well, Oblivious is a couple of years ago, so I don't remember it very well, but the quest structure is pretty similar. I will say though that after 40 hours in skyrim, at no point do I feel lost.

The game is not focused in the sense that you will most likely go around doing other quests instead of the main quest for hours at a time, but that is pretty much the norm for this kind of game.

Larger soul gems are useful for enchanting new items. When you use them, the effects are more powerful. When it comes to recharging already enchanted items the difference is that the larger ones obviously recharge the item more.

What do you mean? You can use any type of soul gem at any time. You just need to make sure it is not empty, and filled with a soul.

I'm guessing you have a larger soul gem, but it is empty, that is why you couldn't use it.

So, I have a quest where an Argonian wants 3 Flawless Amethysts for a ring, I have a ton of regular Amethysts, is there a way to transform them into flawless ones? Not sure how I go about that...

So was it a bad idea to sell the (mid-game spoiler)
Elder Scroll
to the mage college library for $2000 after I used it during the main quest. Are there any other uses for it?

I still haven't found any spells above apprentice level. Who sells them? I'm level 30, and my restoration is above 50. Destruction is 46.

for PC its E, so holding on E would lift the item? mind blown

Yes, hold E to lift and move objects/people. There is a quest when this becomes useful.

Although I really hate the object manipulation physics, sometimes I want to place an object on a table in my house or something and it's impossible. I don't remember if there were mods that made it easier to do for Fallout or Oblivion, but I hope there is a mod that makes it easier to move crap around in your home.

Some spells don't become available in shops till certain levels.

Can't remember which level unlocks what...

I spoke to a lot of people there, they seem to sell the same spells. Anyone in particular?

Faralda sells destruction spells. Each school of magic has one person specializing in it in the College. Better spells don't unlock until a certain skill level, usually around the time the next level perk is available. Trying going to Faralda once you reach 50 in destruction, the adept spells should be available.

You'll find them randomly in loot, usually off harder enemies.

No, it's a quest item because you can give it to
the librarian at the college
that's the whole point of it I think. That's what I did with it and I have no other uses for it, aside from decoration (which was impossible because I couldn't remove it from my inventory.)

How? Oblivion is a while back, so my memory is hazy, but I think it feels nearly the same. Well, it is still janky, and definitely one of the weakest part of the package still.

I'm not saying it's the best out there, but go back and play default (no deadly reflex) oblivion, the animations here are much improved. I will say magic has seen the biggest improvements.

So I almost just ganked by a Dark Brotherhood assassin a few minutes ago while traveling to a destination to perform my latest good deed with questionable morality. I was able to react to him and gain the upper-hand because I heard a faint footstep from my back speakers (I really shouldn't have even heard it but now that I think about it, the game wasn't playing any background music for a while before this which was just... genius <3) prompting me to turn around immediately. So now I'm left with two distinctive states of mind:

1) I'm seriously paranoid now as I'm turning around every few steps. I'm beginning to think I may want to start taking Lydia out with me instead of leaving her safely at home where she wouldn't meet her end by some enraged coked-out bear that seems to know (I wonder if I snuck past the cave bear in the beginning, would bears lick my face like deer currently do?). Anyways.... I won't take Lydia out so I'm constantly turning around to make sure I don't get ganked.

2) I'm deeply depressed at the thought that I may not be able to have a dark brotherhood quest since they've taken a contract for my life (though I really need to find who put it out so I can end them like I did that fucking Anise... old witch wanted me dead for <probably> stealing something from her rickety cabin!). Has anyone encountered this? Is it still possible to perform that quest-line? I'm over 120 hours in and I can't go back :(

I meant mechanics wise, were there improvements? There is no denying that skyrim looks better. Oblivion was 3 years ago after all.

Update time!

Really enjoying just wondering around on the horse. Lots to see. Daedric Bow/Dagger with Dragonscale is super powerful. Killing most Dragon Priests in a couple of sneak arrow shots.

Don't worry, I had an assassination attempt on my life before I joined the brotherhood and it doesn't affect it at all.

You can still do the questline even though they put a hit out on you, same thing happened to me.

Imperial brofist, brother.

I've decided to go Stormcloak at the next opportunity. I wasn't sure which way to go, but when I was riding past some Imperial dudes on the road escorting a Stormcloak prisoner, they made some unusually snobby comments about me. And just like that, their fate was sealed. One free prisoner, three dead Imperial scum tossed over the side of the road. I'll formalize my alignment next time I ride through a Stormcloak camp.

I like that bounty adds up until you kill the last witness, in which case it's removed. I got the bounty and was all mad since we were out in the woods, but removing it after the last witness was killed makes a shocking large amount of sense.

Just off the top of my head.

Duel wielding is fun.
Can cast spells from both hands and combine different spells.
Can use L or R hand for weapons and shields.
Archery is now worth a damn.

Combat as a whole I feel is extremely deep. The complexity of tryig to creating scenarios that allow you to fight overpowered enemies makes the combat enjoyable for me. People who hate combat in Elder Scrolls games always go for the one-handed hack-n-slash soar spot as though it's the games fault. If someone min-max their one-handed and then spams the trigger button to win, they only have themselves to blame for not enjoying what they created.

Same way with smaller souls, except you need to kill bigger targets. Cast Soul Trap, either the spell or via an Enchanted weapon with Soul Trap on it, and then kill them. Their soul will go to the smallest container that can house it (i.e., if you have one Gem of each type and kill a Common enemy, it'll go to the Common Soul Gem). If you don't have their proper Soul Gem, it'll go to the next smallest (i.e., same Common enemy but no Common Soul Gem so it goes into a Greater).

Some spells don't become available in shops till certain levels.

Can't remember which level unlocks what...

For the most part, it's ~10-15 skill below that tier. Or always as sometimes it's possible to glitch a vendor into showing more, though I have no idea how to do it on command.

Also, in regard to companion killing, enemy blows don't hurt them when kneeling. They don't get targeted, yes, but they also flat out don't take damage. Lingering effects will continue to persist after they kneel, however, which can kill them as can your attacks. I've tried to get my Lydia killed far more than she probably deserves but nothing will do it. She's taken countless spells to the face, area of effect spells landing on her, Dragon breaths, various attacks, and so-on.

Use the workbench where you upgrade apparel in order to upgrade the shields.
Give me some credit, I know that much. =P

My issue is that I can upgrade, say, Dwarven, Steel, Scale, Plate, or Elven armor and shield to "Exquisite" but the highest Branded Iron can go is "Superior." Anything higher than that it says I "lack the required skill." Eh?

I'm level 55 Smithing. I have perks in Steel, Elven, Advanced Armors, and Dwarven. I plan to get all the perks in that tree at some point.

The relevant Perk lowers the skill needed to get the Armors upgraded. For instance, you need an effective Skill of 65 Skill to get to Exquisite so your 55 Smithing can't get items that high; however, the Steel Perk means you only need 40 Smithing to do Exquisite for Steel equipment.

Since Leather, Fur, Iron, etc. don't have an associated Perk, you'll need the full values to get to their upgrades:

Fine - 1
Superior - 31
Exquisite - 61
Flawless - 100
Epic - 150
Legendary - 196

Edit: Just to be complete, here's them if you have the Perk:

Fine - 1
Superior - 22
Exquisite - 40
Flawless - 57
Epic - 74
Legendary - 91

SON OF A BITCH! It happened again!

Bethesda fix this shit.. Now I'm stuck with Rjorn's Drum. I thought the quest item bug only occurred if you got the item before starting the actual quest. However, this time I got stuck with the item despite taking on the quest properly.

I'm now stuck with more than 30 pounds of quest items that should be gone from my inventory.. Can't wait to see how the game screws me over with the 'Unusual Gem'. Hopefully that's not bugged. I'm tempted to skip all sidequests and finish the main story.. Thanks for ruining the game with this unforgivable bugs Bethesda.
