The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

I would at the very least, keep your 1.1 LAA exe going OR Skyrim 4GB until the next patch with the fix. It's about time as I lost some frames with this new exe. Had 1 CTD but I don't know if that was random yet.

Not to any surprise but you definitely lose frames with the new exe still and they basically just confirmed that it will be in the next PC update so even if you're not getting crashes or CTD's anymore, if you care about better performance, you need a 4GB enabled exe.

Sounds good. Glad next week we will be doing away with that BS though!

LOL, huge glitch with the 1.3 patch - I fast-traveled to a location where dragons I knew were dead (to get their bones) and they fell through the world upon coming in!

I'm gonna FRAPS that (if it's redo-able) and post a gif here. lol

So will the SKSE fix for resistances from patch 1.2 have any affect now? does anything need to be uninstalled if I had that fix?

Just launch normally via Steam now as its been fixed. You can use SKSE in the future for other things so keep it around.

"We’re also planning on rolling out support for 4-Gigabyte Tuning (Large Address Aware) next week for our PC users. Stay tuned!"

Not sure this has been posted. But, that's cool that they are acknowledging this.

Fucking finally. Shit was suppose to be there day 1 though! But hey, better late than never!

NOTE: if you use the original LAA exe, you have to roll back interfaces too because they are borked if you don't (can't fast travel, etc)

So with resistances fixed, I believe I'ma gonna go back and play my mage. (had a ton of fun with my thief though).

Also, can someone explain to me (who's a PC tech nub) what that 4 gigabyte tuning is/does?

Just makes it so that the game uses more than 2GB of ram. Helps keep things running smoothly.

Allows you to use more than 2GB of your computer's RAM.

Is it actually using more than 2GB of RAM though on your system? Whenever I monitor mine it never goes over 1GB with or without the 4GB .exe/LAA.

Haven't actually monitored it but it runs much much better with it.

I get minimal crashes. Without it I get frequent crashes.

Crashes ever 10 minutes for me even with the 4 GB loader. At least this game has taught me a valuable lesson about which developers to support...

The new patch works great. Things seem smoother on my dual core.

Not CTD's but then again I've not experienced one in 50 hours of gameplay. It's rock solid. And all my kit is overclocked.

Yes. What you're not taking into account is that the 2 GB limit includs system RAM AND video RAM. So if your combined VRAM + system RAM usage = >2gb, your shit is hosed.

Put in a note to have the sound checked. Let's see if that if anything comes of this. The sound is too low still. And still no one with a good answer to the shadow and dungeon lighting radius.

guys I have a question playing on the patch now... no problem so far but. I need to know the command line for the prefs ini that controls the brightness. You can change it in the systems tab, under settings, but since I make them read only it has brightness up to like 90% I just don't know the line.

nevermind..... O____________o GODDAMN it the fucking fov shit is back... I fast traveled, and it changed my 1stpersonfov to 70 again. RAGE

Right, but even when I use the LAA (or 4GB .exe) it doesn't change how much system memory it is using. I am monitoring this with task manager, so if that is not an accurate judge of RAM use then that might be why I'm seeing this.

lol the interface is fucked too.... Well this is ridiculous..... I'm play offline from now on... Glad I kepted the other interface.bsa..... smh Bethesda....

Anybody have any luck getting Crossfire to work on ATi 5xxx cards? The 11.11c performance driver says it provides crossfire scaling with the 5 series cards but I STILL get negative scaling on my 5850s with and without CAP2. Tried driver sweeper and all that with no luck. :(

You need to check VRAM usage as well. Not just system memory. System memory usage will increase over time, and depending on your cache settings. I can get the game to use up to 1.3GB of system RAM.

I haven't played in a week or so.. last time I played it ran fine.

Today though.. when ever I start the game it runs fine but soon as I leave a city or enter a cave or anything the game completely goes to shit. The game will freeze every 5 to 10 seconds. :/

have to say my game looks better. I have FXAA on too. I turned off AA I had though my card.. My game is clean and no jaggies... the interface still doesn't work even with the old file.... I can't unfav, or fav anything. :/

Yea I had that happened before the patch, and it was kind of creepy because it didn't just fall but it was bouncing up and down for a bit and wiggling, I thought it was crawling through the village...

I think some NPCs does it too after loading/waiting, and you could see them fall from like a few inches above the ground for a split second.

That happened to me outside of Whiterun and it still happens on occasion but it digs itself out of the ground fairly realistically and then basically dies once it gets to the surface completely.

It's not just about using more memory (potentially) but avoiding address space fragmentation. Part of the suspected reason for all the CTDs, and why making your game LAA fixes it, is because memory fragmentation can lead to memory allocation failures.

Guy who made the 4GB launcher wrote a post about it.

I once had a dragon skeleton in Winterhold rise up out of the ground. It looked fucking amazing. I wish I could have known to record it.

Also, I just shoot dragon skeletons out of the way with magic now. One blast shoots them really far, so it feels bad ass and it gets them out of the towns.

Sigh.
I'm about to finish the game (tonight or tomorrow) so I guess I'll just leave it open to be absolutely sure it won't auto-update. I don't need a new patch mucking stuff up when I finally just got it working smoothly again.

EDIT: AGH. I guess it started to auto-update since I suddenly have no TESV.EXE at all. But it didn't finish for some reason.

sorry for repeat post but anyone know...?

Next to the Dark Brotherhoods sanctuary there's a small pool.
For ages, every time I fast traveled there a dragon skeleton would rise up out of the pool. Gave me the creeps.

The first dragon you kills skeleton actually somehow warped in front of Whiterun for me. Half the time I would exit the city, I'd see this skeleton dragon rising out of the ground. Frankly, it was kind of cool.

lol, skyrim won't even start for me (PC) now. I'm guessing this is a common problem. Will read through the thread. jesus christ bethesda. embarassing.

edit: after forcing steam to verify the game cache, skyrim finally started updating to patch 1.3. maybe that was the problem.

Crashed to desktop on my first quick travel after loading a game. This time I actually got a "Skyrim.exe has stopped working" message, when the infrequent CTDs I got before would provide no message.

I didn't touch the game at all after the 1.2 patch. Guess it's back to playing other stuff for a while.
