The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Been messing around with some settings for the Himmelsrand shaders (top is vanilla):

Wait, that's vanilla(top one)? As in no texture packs? Christ. What settings are you using? o.o

For the lulz. What is everyone's frame rate looking down over Whiterun from Dragonsreach?

About 40-45 like it is for every city except Markarth (30 fps) and that other one a little south of Solitude. My framerate doesn't drop at all in that "city".

Makarth is terrible. It's the only area I've experienced so far that really makes me want to lock the frame rate at 30. Those constant spikes and falls are headache inducing. >.<

Just wait until you do a later mission in the
dwarven dungeon
. You get out and get an even higher view of the city and that is the worst fps I've had in the entire game. It was 22fps a that point. This was before my OC boost but I doubt that would change anything in an "intense" view like that.

Here's a tip for everyone jizzing over his first screenshot, screenshots look extra good when they're down ressed.

Mine dropped to 17fps, it was hilarious.

Yeah as soon as we were about to exit to the city that realization hit me and I was like "uh oh".

It had to be about 20 fps, I tried to stay in the back somewhere and facing the castle. Anything I could do to keep the framerate up.

Even so, they don't look like skyrims default indoor textures. :3

Fantastic! :| What the hell's causing drops like this? Shadows? Particle effects?
I know stuff that should be rendered by a GPU is being rendered by the CPU for console optimization, but damn.. :/

What's going on here??

Not using any mods.
The game had also suffered from several missing textures syndrome before (3D model can be seen but with no texture). Already has over 88 game hours.

Glad to know that even those with high end machines are getting frame drops in the cities. Markath is disgraceful for me, while everything outside cities or inside buildings is great.

So I have always been kind of skeptical of this 4gb stuff because when watching my system memory skyrim never took much over 1gb, but someone recommended process hacker earlier in this thread to monitor system and gpu memory and I figured I'd give it a try.

Wasn't quite sure what I was looking for initially so I just ran the 4gb file with process hacker and noticed after playing awhile virtual size would slowly start to inch up over 2 gb (would normally start at around 1.3 gb). So I figured that must be it. So I start up the normal non-4gb .exe. Sure enough whenever virtual size approached 2 GB (normally around 1.97 or 1.98) the game would CTD. No "stopped responding" message from Windows or anything, the process would just close. I'm running lots of texture mods by the way which is probably why I would get to 2gb so quickly.

So now I'm a believer. Everyone, use the 4 gb exe! At least until the next patch comes out. And what a screw up by Bethesda not incorporating laa from the get go.

Fake edit: Of course, since I don't really know what I'm talking about it is entirely possible virtual size is actually referring to something completely unrelated and it was just coincidence.

Can anyone tell me how it would run on this?

3.06 GHz Intel Core i3
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB

Don't Laugh.

Medium settings @ 1080p.

The game runs surprisingly well even on older hardware. I have a 4850 and run everything on high @ 1080p and get 60 FPS indoors, 45-50 outdoors and 25-35 FPS in cities.

Here's a youtube video of a guy with I think a worse cpu, same gpu - seems to get pretty good performance at 1600x900. Googling skyrim on 4670 turns up several more that all seem to be pretty good.

Looks good, only problem is I can see the movement is far from smooth in that video. It was the same way with new vegas for me on this, and had to turn down the settings.

Can't stand that sort of snappy motion.

Keep in mind he's also running fraps in the background recording video. I think in the comments he states he gets ~40fps or something.

Edit: Nevermind, I was being dumb. It's actually really easy to customize the gamepad controls by yourself. I just took the remap linked to in the OP and swapped the buttons for favorites and tween menu.

Is it me or does some mods do not work with the 4gb patch? I downloaded the FPS limiter and put the files into the skyrim folder, and my fps still go from 60 to 20 depending on where i am. But if i launch the game through steam, it seems to work just fine. But then i CTD after a loading screen which are pretty much longer thanks to the HD textures i wanted to try.

SkyUI is pretty impressive. You can't sort or filter with a gamepad, but it doesn't really hurt the gamepad experience either other than losing the ability to equip items with RT/LT to specific hands. And you still get the vastly improved layout.

Hopefully they'll also release some kind of guide to configuring it because right now it's not obvious (at least to me) how to change things up looking at the config file.

holy shit I'm playing the new update for an hour and didn't even know it... lol 1.3.7...? Also I never did the 4gb mod so how do I take advantage I have 8gb... Also I play an hour and had no problems.

I hit 7FPS.... This was running on a custom config with everything at Medium / High. I changed everything to low hoping for some kind of improvement... Still... 7FPS... Worst part in the game, but that's over now and since then everything's been butter. CPU limited on Socket 939 for life!

I lied, just got a 2500K!

ok what did it do? anyone.... or has it been 1.3.7.0 if so mind blown....

Is there a way to make a shortcut to launch Skyrim via the nexus mod manager? I know Mod Organizer does, but I can't get that to work. It would also be nice if nexus mod manager wouldn't switch of when starting Skyrim.

1.3.7.0 is update 1.3, the LAA patch isn't out yet.
Alright Bethesda, I've been taking a break from Skyrim while you finish up the LAA patch but my vacation starts on Tuesday.

Whether I spend the first few days of that vacation in a sleepless yet blissful Skyrim induced haze is completely up to you.

Is there any way to reduce the flickering caused by AO? I'm running performance level AO and the flickering can get quite bad. Also, is there a way of reducing the distance of AO as it seems to highlight features far ahead when they're not meant to be really visible.

I turned that off straight away once I noticed the flickering.

SkyUI is as amazing as I expected it to be. Best inventory in any RPG ever. And they managed to include all that functionality while still making it look slick and well integrated with the standard look of the game.

Why not just use the 4GB patcher? I very much doubt that Bethesda will do anything different.
