The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Shadows look terrible on ultra, and terrible on high, medium and low.

But the performance gains are huge?

EDIT: Shit. That was close. Forgot I'll need a no-CD patch first to avoid getting VAC banned.

You can get VAC banned in single player games?

It worked! Modified the executable to give it access to all the RAM in my system and the game appears to be using it. uGrids is at 9, framerate's smooth as silk, stuttering's gone and no crashes. Haven't given it a proper try, though.

High is the best compromise I've found. Low/Medium just make the shadow LOD very obvious.

If I were you, I would drop it down to 2xaa. If you are running a high enough res, you will barely notice the difference and have a decent gain in framerate.

He's got a GTX 580... he can run 8x MSAA with no performance loss. Weird though that my OC'd GTX 570 has NO problems with the game completely maxed out, yet some people are getting hitching? Drivers...?

Care to share how you did that? Or just upload the exe?

Before I pull the trigger, just wondering, how are HD5770s holding up for this game?

Runs well everywhere but in towns, or places with a lot of objects. I get around 23fps in towns with most settings on high and a few on medium

Extremely well. I play at 1600x900 on Ultra settings. Doesn't run as good as Fallout 3/NV but it sure as shit beats the first time I tried to play Morrowind at highest settings with a top-of-the-line card back in the day.

I'll have to say I've been very pleased with my 5770 this past year. It's taken everything I've thrown at it this year at high settings, including Battlefield 3 and the Witcher 2. My metric for "time to buy a new card" is when I can't get consistently higher than 30fps at 1600x900 at near-highest in-game settings, so it might be a while before I bother upgrading... maybe if I buy a new monitor...

Any fixes for the super quiet game audio?

I found a few problems people were having with 5.1/7.1 audio, but I'm not using that, it's not that.

Really irritating, I don't like having to turn my amp up to ridiculous levels, where even a windows beep is deafening.

Hitching may not be the right word for what I was seeing. I would turn the mouse left and right and wasn't perfectly smooth is all. Once I dropped the shadows to high, it was completely smoothed out. I doubt most folks would even care about a slight reduction in smoothness where as I'm ridiculously anal about that shit.

Setting the AA settings to 8x also caused a ton of what appeared to be microstutter for me, specifically when I entered the tower area that had the big rug and chandelier right after the opening dragon attack. Reducing it to 4x all but cleared it up. Mind you, I'm using the game options screen. I haven't tried disabling the AA options and just running an override from the Nvidia control panel.

As for drivers, as noted I'm running the last official release. I haven't bothered to upgrade to the beta as it doesn't seem to add anything unless you're running SLI which I'm not. I just recently played through Battlefield 3 on these drivers without a problem.

Did you try this?

Access the Sound menu from the Control panel. In the playback tab, right click on speakers and select properties. Select the advanced tab on the new screen and select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) from the drop down menu.

It's supposed to fix some crashes to the desktop but maybe it will help?

WAT

please post your specs, as the game struggles for me on high (1920x1080) with a blur on medium I believe. I always dip into the low 20's in towns or areas that are populated with object or light sources.

uGrids 11. Game is rock solid with large address aware.

Has anyone encountered this problem?
When i click "Play" in steam I just get the "Preparing to launch the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" message box opening and closing in a loop forever. In Task Manager i can see the skyrimlauncher.exe appearing and disappearing.
It's not a huge deal, since I can still play by opening the TESV.exe file directly, but it's super-annoying since there's no video options in-game and the launcher isn't working, so I have to delve into the ini files for even the most minor change. Also it would be cool to be able to see the steam 'time played' and be able to get achievements, but I guess that's not important.

Also, in one of my saves everybody in dragonreach keeps trying to kill me, even though i'm doing quests for them and they like me. I had to go back to a save from a few hours before to get rid of it. I re-did all the same things from before and it didn't happen again, so I don't know what the fuck.

My level is aperently stuck at 5. The bar is completely full and i keep getting experence but still stuck at 5. I think im out of autosaves and quicksaves from before i should have hit level 6 and i really don't want to redo the first 5 hours of this game. It is really extremely bumming me out though.

It also crashes 25% of the time when I hit F12 to take a screen shot, which i do fairly often and want to keep doing.

1600x900?

Im playing on 1920x1080 and am capped on 23-24 frames per second. Running a six core cpu. Medium. Horrible :(

Thank god im not the only one.

TheOcrtagon, what are your specs?

I run 1080p and ultra high a min of 30 FPS, even while streaming to twitchtv. All I have is 4gb of DDR3, 2500k and a 6850.

Anyone try increasing iShadowMapResolution in the ini? I'm curious to see if it improves the shadows beyond the blocky mess the are now.

Majorly improved engine, same old flaws/bugs/easily fixed, but still left unfixed despite community awareness, performance bugs...

TheOctagon said:
Haven't checked as the game is not solid when using alt-tab. The mere fact that it runs full-clip with that many cells in RAM, though, is evidence enough.

Are you using Mad Boris' program to make it large address aware?

Edit: I mean the same program used for FO3, I might be getting the name wrong.

That screenshot looks amazing, TheOctagon.

Could someone explain this business about uGrids to me? Stuff about corrupting save data and getting VAC banned without a no-CD crack all sounds suspect, but damn that screenshot looks nice.

Yeah, though I'm guessing it's a one-time explanation thing only since it's been asked several times but noone seems to be bothered to answer or give a link to how to go about doing it.

Anyone experiencing FPS drops outdoors at some places? I'm chatting with Salsa and he's having problems with this using these specs: "gtx 560ti 512ddr5, it 2500k @ 3.4ghz, game detects everything on Ultra but in some places outdoors i get as low as 30fps"

Worth noting is that he is playing in 1360x768. I have the exact same specs and it's almost always rock solid at 60fps at 1680x1050.

Is this a known issue, and is there a solution for this?

But not the same software. Anyway, ask Salsa to OC that i5 starting from 4 GHz to see if performance gets better. Salsa, if you're reading this, you can add me on Steam and we can chat about it. I had similar problems (with a GTX 580). Steam ID: felipaopl

I'm running Ultra with 8xaa averaging 30-40fps on 570 OC. Is that what you're getting?

The game looks pretty good most of the time

Way off topic and possibly inappropriate, but Salsa wasn't permabanned was he :(?

"how do I remove the stuttering while turning? Setting shadows to high didn't work. Rocking an i5 2500K, 8gb of ram and 6950 1gb"

Bumping for new page

You just add uGridsToLoad=7 (or 9, 11.. etc) under [General] in Skyrim.ini

Experiment without saving and you will be fine, I personally decided it's not worth it for the performance drop with my 1600p resolution, 60fps or bust.

Out of curiosity, since I have 2x580's. Is he disabbling 8xaa in the menu and forcing 8xmsaa some other way? I did not notice an MSAA in the menu's.

Thanks

When I move the mouse, the pointer moves half a second later, do someone know how to fix this? it's unplayable!

I already turned off mouse acceleration and vsync. Thanks!

turn of AA 1gb probably isn't enough texture memory try MLAA instead

Went to skyrimprefs.ini

added the line :

uGridsToLoad=11
made tesv.exe LAA

But I'm certain I've missed something since the changes didn't go through ( judging by the performance not being affected at all ).

Anyone?
