The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Annnnnd now the game won't even start, reporting error code 77.

Google shows that this is a common problem with no solution yet.

Looks like I was patched.

Resistances were gone (so sloppy) and I couldn't place things in containers any more. Had to revert both my EXE and my Interface file.

Such a terrible patch.

But one thing I noticed after I reverted back: It looks like some stuff may have glitched in the game. For instance, the conjuration guy at the College is talking about missing apprentices in a way that makes me think I missed a quest being triggered, and then the Jarl of Winterhold asked me to retrieve a helm that I've already retrieved for him.

Were these pre-existing glitches, or are they new?

So if I launch Skyrim from online Steam right now, will it patch it? I thought they had pulled the patch, but then some people are saying they are still getting patched. I guess I can just use those files linked earlier to depatch it though right, and that will fix the resistances?

The missing apprentice thing was there before patch. I've actually found a few of them, and talked to him about them, but no quest has ever been generated. I have no idea if that is a bug or not though.

Broken resistances is brutal, man. Eurgh.

Patch hasn't really affected me otherwise though, at least yet. Will continue to go offline with Steam when I'm not around though, just because.

I can't even launch the dang thing.

After I launch it in STEAM it launches the setup... I click "Play" it throws a "This program needs permission..." dialogue box... I click "Continue" and it reverts back to the freaking Launch screen...

Any tips?

EDIT: Think I found the answer: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2264333 ... .that links me to here: http://qbeukes.blogspot.com/2011/11/skyrim-launcher-doesnt-work-launcher.html

About to try it; I'll report on whether it works or not.

My game is busted.

Outside I get a nice stable framerate but once I go inside a building my framerate drops to 1 or two fps.

This has started after the 1.2 patch.

edit: I fixed my issues by removing all mods and I also stopped using the 4GB exe. I'll add my mods back in one by one to see which is the culprit.

edit2: I tracked my issue down to a SkyrimPrefs.ini setting from hardocp. Using iShadowMapResolution=8192 cripples my framerate when inside, so I have set it back to 4096.
I'm using GTX 580 in SLI so am perplexed by this but anyway .... *shrugs*

Why are you using the patch? Just revert.
This here is wisdom.

Started it up tonight and a few minutes later I had my first crash to the desktop. Booted it up again and for the very first time I started seeing some true weirdness in the game: characters hovering, sliding, a horse and it's rider floating around 30 feet in the air like a wandering UFO before warping away into the mountainside. Then my rock textures in Whiterun disappeared leaving just dark black blocky bits where once there was stone.

I had Steam configured not to update Skyrim as I'm still using the LAA'd original exe, but lo and behold, it looks like Steam decided to change my mind for me and reset it. Luckily I had the old executable saved away just in case.

And voila - everything was perfect again.

Awesome, 3 CTDs in 5 minutes. Game is completely unplayable now.

Will reverting screw up my saves when they patch the game again? I never even backed up my old executable...

The only patch issue I've had is the game causing the .exe to vanish, making me validate the files several times to fix it. Sure, bugs, but the executable itself gone? surely thats on a checklist in a patch of things to definitely get right?

le sigh~

After about 10 mins. of play time the game just crashes to the desktop without any window prompt or error messages, just closes itself with no warning.
It used to do this pretty infrequently and usually only after I travel to a new location and after an autosave so it didn't bother me much, but now it happens all the time when I'm just walking the world.
Is this the same 'crash to desktop' issue that seems to be coming up lately? Is there a fix or do we have to wait for another patch?

Thanks.

Am I the only one not having any issues with the new patch.

I've got a vanilla install. No mods. Viewpoints looks okay. Xbox 360 controller works great. All menus work. No CTD's.

What OS are people using who are or are not experiencing CTS's?

Windows 7 64bit
Core 2 Duo overclocked to 2.8Ghz
4Gb Mem
GTX460
5.1 Audio via hdmi cable into amp.

No problems here, so far. Of course I only used Skyrim 4GB and a very minor ini tweak, no mods, so that probably helped me avoid any potential issues from patching.

EDIT: On a side note. I watched Conan the Barbarian, the one with Arnold in it, last night. God damn. It's Skyrim.

Thought I was going to get 60fps everywhere now with the crossfirex support. Boy was I wrong... its the same framerate as before in the first city (40-90fps). Its just staggering that you cant get 60fps with a high-end PC. So its like ive heard that the cpu is the thing holding it back. Have bethesda said anything about switching over the shadows to the GPU in an update?

My hardware if anyone wondering.

Edit:
To clarify, that's the sound of my head hitting my keyboard. Repeatedly.
If they were actually rendering the shadows on the CPU, we'd be talking about seconds per frame, not frames per second.

Which OS?

About the shadow thing. I don't think that's going to get an update and anytime soon. They've got a huge backlog of bug fixes to get done first.

Windows 7. It just sucks want to play the game but these framedrops are really hurting my experience. Just have to maybe wait a couple of months with this game until they fix this.

64 bit or 32 bit?

Ok so I gotta reinstall the game and make sure the game is set to "don't update" before installing?

I had to uncheck the "Enable Steam Community In-game" box to stop Skyrim auto-updating itself, if I just select "Do not automatically update this game" it just reverts back every fucking time.

I am sad, I'm stuck in dragonsreach and cannot leave outside to whiterun otherwise I hang at the loading screen.

I've tried EVERYTHING.

I am totally BONED.

Same here. My only other complaint is the dragons. My first post-patch encounter ended up with the dragon getting itself stuck in the ground. :-/

Right, so it turns out that the "dragon getting itself stuck in the ground" was a dragon crash-landing. I didn't know that could happen! :)

They may also crash land, after sustaining enough damage, becoming unable to fly and scarring the ground in the process.(This has been known to cause glitches, if the dragon has enough health to start flying again the tracks in the ground might keep following them up into the air.)

Screenshots: Pre-battle / Post-battle And here's a screenshot of the dragon crash landing.

Add me to the list of people that the longer I play the worse performance gets and the more often it crashes to desktop.

It used to not crash. Then it was once every 5 to 10 hours. Now it is sometimes as often as every 30 minutes. My frame rates are garbage now too. It is dropping in the teens in some dungeons after sticking around 60 before. Restarting the game sometimes helps for a little while, but it isn't good. I'm not using any mods or tweaks.

You could have asked here too :P

We've been stressing shadows as one of the bigger performance hogs this whole time. I don't really see the point of 8096 either. Although Dennis mentioned he ran the game at 8096 res at 6000 exterior distance. I would leave interior at about 20 00. BTW, Dennis has SLI too , that's why he came up.

BTW, this should be in the Steam base of knowledge. It should work for you btw unless Beth did something deeper. If that doesn't even work, you could try restoring your older exe. But the cache thing has to be in everyone's mind. It basically grabs any missing files instead of making you re DL the entire thing.

More static and noise! Yeah!! That's how do you 'HD'.

Seriously? This shit looks awful. The Enchanting table doesn't even look like it's made out of wood anymore.

Seriously these modders are doing it for free, it's not like they owe you a super high res ultra mod. He even states that it's a simple mod

You may not be thinking you don't have any issues, but I bet you anything resistances no longer work, so your game is broken whether you realize it or not.

Simple test: Conjure an astronach, attempt to use that astronach's element against it. If it hurts them and you don't get a message that they resisted damage, then your game is broken.

So how is everybody fixing this again? I only had the LAA fix before 1.2 and it worked fine. Now it has been patched to 1.2 I am crashing every bloody hour.

Is anyone else experienceing borked controls on a 360 pad after the patch? It seems like all my button mappings are screwed up and sometimes my confirm and interact button X works some of the time. The quest and map menus are especially hard to back out of now.

Is it me or is it fully bright inside caves etc... after the 1.2 patch?

I'm not at the point where I'm developed enough to conjure an Astronach. But I've no doubt you are right.
It makes you wonder if they ask the tea lady to test the patches before they release them.
