The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Why can't Bethesda just post downloadable offline patches like it used to be with older games, without having to go through the abominable thing called "Steam"?
Not all parts of the world (developed industrialized countries to be precise) have access to high-speed internet connection over 100 KBps, and it literally took over 24 hours to download a file over 1.8 GB. And the game practically cannot be played until the download is finished.

*sigh*
[/rant]

Note on timescale's
If the timescale breaks a quest, change it back to the default (30) until done.
~set timescale to XX (Replace XX with number, use 1 for 24hour cycle). Changes the speed of day/night cycle.
~show timescale- View the current timescale.
Timescale breaks a quest? What's the example of this?

I think the current timescale is too fast, I plan to change it to a slower pace (like 12 or 15).

I don't really know a lot of about computernets, why exactly did this game come out with the ability to use only 2GB of ram?

I read it across a couple forums about 3 weeks ago. I added it in as a disclaimer of sorts. Not that it will break your quests guaranteed but incase you have a quest break and you have timescale set to 1, try setting back to default. If the quest is broke and needs patching then it is a more severe issue obviously.

I think that's sort of the default for 32-bit executables, but I'm not sure why they chose not to enable LAA for this game.

Out of nowere I'm getting partially purple textures on things. Then it crashes . Any fix to this?

Someone mentioned that's related to the game running out of memory for textures. Try the LAA mod if you aren't already. I would also try disabling any texture mods if you're using any.

Because it was untested. They're putting it in now the community implemented this and showed no problem.

There's that, but I'm sure they're doing their own testing to satisfy whoever signs off on these decisions. Plus since the game came out they've also been collecting DxDiag details from PC users having crashes, and probably found a lot of them were caused by memory fragmentation. Which making the game LAA largely solves.

Hey guys, regarding my problem... I fixed it. YES! FINALLY. So here's what I did. I uninstalled the (recommended) beta driver. After reboot, Windows automatically installed the default GPU driver. Then, I ran the latest stable driver, and chose "Custom" before installing and ticked the "Fresh install". Now, before rebooting, I noticed a "Disable 3D Vision" tab when clicking on the Start menu. Seems like it installed with the stable driver. Not sure what it was on beta, but I clicked on it. Then reboot, ran Skyrim and it's 50~60fps @ Ultra.

Witcher 2 is a disaster though, but let's leave that for another day.

Seriously, thank you guys for the help and effort, so much.

How big is the performance hit? Also, how hard is it to share your config (I haven't used these ENB mods before)

I'll say about 5-10 fps... But then its because I'm using a mix of FXAA (with AA forced and high quality sharpening) and ENB. I'm using the latest version of both, with some modified settings.

Simply drag and drop in your installation folder, making sure to backup your previous FXAA / ENB files, and deleting them:

I've decided to write off my 30 hour PS3 save and just bought the Steam version for PC instead.

Is the OP being updated? Or should I just to go to Nexus and get the top bunch of mods?

Is there a new hotfix being released or something in the last few hours? Steam required to download additional file or something of around 22.7 MB in order to start Skyrim. This occurred after I downloaded the colossal 1.8 GB patch (version 1.3), played for an hour, then switched to Offline Mode.

pretty sure that is from downloading some high res texture packs and the 2 gb of ram cannot handle it, happened to me and after I downloaded the 4gb Skyrim mod, they went away

As others have commented, the world textures look worse than the originals, and the weapons look different but not necessarily better. Replacement textures were needed in Morrowind and Oblivion, but not in Skyrim imo.

Although I agree that alot of the HD textures from the texture packs don't look very good. Vanilla textures are not even close to being up to par to modern games. Some of them are absolutely piss poor quality, clearly demonstrating the shortcomings of the console. I'm sure developers designed much higher resolution textures for buildings, apparel and weapons, shame they "forgot" to include this in the PC version.

Wish I could have that colour water without the mod.

Hello dear gents and scholars, might magicians of the outlandish skyrim worlds,

I'm about to dive into the game.

System:

i52500k@4.3ghz
560ti @900mhz @1gb RAM
8GB RAM

Now, any experiences which settings and mods are the best for my systems before I start configuring for hours and hours instead of actually playing the game? :D

Could you post a before/after comparison of those screens?

Is that with AO off? When I tried it it was flickering on all the trees and just didn't look very good, but with the AO off it looked kind of flat and bland...

I tried the 4GB mod, no different. Still CTD after like an hour, which is typical. I think most of these mods are basically placebos.

Why? It looks like a swimming pool in a cheap holiday resort.

It reminds me of glacial water in the mountains. I kind of like it, actually.

... though I despise every single other hue / saturation / brightness / contrast tweak that's ever been posted in this thread.

For the Skyrim 4GB mod, do I have to launch the game using the Skyrim4GB exe or can I just launch it directly from Steam after I've done it once already?

I've had 0 CTD's since using it. It was happening about every half an hour before that.

Same, the only time i get CTD since i started using the 4gb fix is when i constantly alt+tab between windows and the game to check uesp.net for alchemy ingredients and other stuff.

You have to launch the game with the 4gb.exe, not Steam.

It certainly looks like that too, although I imagine swimming pool colours are inspired by such places. But whether you associate it with a swimming pool, glacial water, or tropical beach, it doesn't make much sense in the Skyrim landscape.

Yep,I get that sometimes on trees and also,a good sign it's coming is when you have the pictures when it's loading and you get an animal screenshot, and it's all shiny and bright, means you better reboot soon...

Yeah. It's just been happening more lately. Probably the mods.

Whatever dude. It's not like you can measure the system RAM + VRAM usage and see that the game crashes when it hits 2 GB of combined usage...

Oh wait, yes you can. 4GB mod is not a placebo. Educate yourself, young troll.

Your problem lies elsewhere.

I'd be more concerned about save file bloat than anything else in regards to PC stability. That's what will cripple everyones playthrough in the end, and it's guaranteed to happen with enough playtime, no matter how powerful or stable your system is. What do you expect with the Gamebryo engine? (let's not spread further lies by claiming that by adding dragons!!1 to gamebryo that it's no longer gamebryo)

I've been concerned by this aswell. However I have more concern with the "time-bomb animation" bug which previously occurred in Oblivion. It is mentioned many times in the official Elder Scrolls forum that after a long time of playing (usually ~200 hours) all sorts of glitchy animations would start to occur in the gameworld. One of the most accepted solutions (at least in the official forum) to tackle it is by using some kind of Wrye Bash's reset button.

There is also the save game bug thing in Oblivion, in which there was a recommendation from a certain old-time user there not to load a save game after playing the game. Essentially he recommended the others to restart from desktop if a player want to load a save game.

Daylight screens look fantastic! I'm not sure about the night screen though. I like my nights dark. :P

The effects are meant to be better but there is something about these FXAA type pics with more color that just don't do it for me. Not that the quality or the effort isn't appreciated but I still haven't been convinced to try these types of mods.

just hit 100 hours lol so time for a little break. I really hope the update in the next few days doesn't fucks it up again... :( I love this game though.... sooo amazing.
