The Evil Within 2 |OT| "Something not quite right"

So I'm at Chapter 4 and I have yet to die. Does the random save moments create checkpoints for you when you die or do you strictly revert back to the last manual safe you made in a safe house? I'm curious to know if I can ease up or be a bit more concerned about dying.

i dunno, the handgun is my most used weapon right now... i kill a lot with a single headshot, and when it doesn't work, i finish with the knife while he stumble after the headshot!

i mostly use stealth, but sometime it's easier to just shoot it, and it's pretty easy to find or make handgun ammo

Did you simply dump everything into raising critical twice then? Because they don't do anything other than swarm from a single headshot for me.

No idea why they wouldn't. If you use a crafting bench to craft a single bullet it autosaves too, which you can load from. If you look at your save list, the manual and auto are separate, and it wouldn't make sense if death took you back to your last manual save (unless it was your most recent save).

I guess I just wasted all my upgrade gel. I spent it on Predator. You're supposed to get a red arrow to pop up when you can do the attack and it never pops up.

So yea don't buy Predator in the stealth tree.

When you start you don't have many options. But one of those options is stealth. Another option is running.

You can shoot things but don't expect much.

Yeah this definitely isn't an action game despite what some of the marketing tried to say.
Definitely more of a stealth game. Though I think that's why I don't mind it. Stealth to get through things and if that doesn't work I can either flee or pop off a few shots to handle the fight depending on the scale of the situation.

This is my exact problem right now. Struggling to muster the motivation to keep playing because I have no idea what the game is trying to be.

It's bizarre that I feel like I'm having this issue, because despite my issues with the first game, I felt like I did understand the fundamental combat flow, and that it was one of the game's strengths.

Here, I just can't get a grasp on what exactly I'm supposed to do. The easy answer would be "stealth kill everything" but I just feel like there must be more to it than that. If I had to guess, later you'll get more resources to craft ammo for the crossbow, and the bolts become the primary combat tool.

Also worth noting is I haven't picked up the Shotgun yet, which will probably change the close-quarters combat flow quite a bit.

It's basically open world TLoU

This is how it feels so far, does anyone know if the horror emphasis gets cranked up as the game progresses? Has anyone gotten far enough yet to say?

If so, I might blitz through the open-world-ish part and get to the stuff I came for.

I wouldn't be so down on the stealth focus if the crouch walk speed wasn't so fucking slow.

Aside from that, I'm into it. Controlling Sebas feels so much better here than in the original, where he was clunky and unresponsive. I also have a deep rooted love for scavenging through abandoned spots in video games, so that aspect is definitely working for me here.

I do miss the original voice cast though.

Ok, can you all help me with something very basic?

How the fuck do you optimally kill regular zombies? I cannot figure this shit out.

Unless the hitbox is absurdly specific, handgun shot to the knee doesn't knock them down.

Knife does barely anything, I'm assuming upgrades help with this.

Several encounters so far have had them jump up and swarm me, how the hell do I counter this. I have NOTHING to work with in that scenario other than a smoke or explosive bolt.

Is it really just two head shots? Is that the optimal way? Or am I missing something? I know this has been beaten to death at this point, but...I really wish the match system had come back.

A decent way into Chapter 3 and so far, and if you asked me if the game was a sequel to TLOU or EW1, I would've said TLOU.

Also, I'm playing stealthy so this doesn't really affect me, but a lot of PR leading up to release emphasized how you could play the game the way you want. To be frank, at this point in the game, I call complete bullshit. Balls-to-the-wall frontal assault would literally be impossible with these ammunition constraints. The only way to play this game is with calculated stealth.

I hate to say it but I'm really not feeling it so far. And the kicker is that so far nothing has been even remotely scary.

If you have the smoke and explosive bolts you should have shock arrows and the shotgun- both are available early in Chapter 3.

In ambush situations use the bolts for traps instead of direct hits by setting trip wires.

Shotgun is fantastic to knock enemies flat so you move in for the stomp. You can easily CC 2-3 enemies in one shot in close quarters with the shotgun.

Upgrade your combat tree to get the ability to kick stunned enemies.

Upgrade your handgun to get your headshot crit to at least 30%.

Run- you have more stamina than the enemies. If they sprint and you don't take them down with a knee shot run until they slow down again and then line up for a head shot.

Use the environment- cars, trucks, large pallets, etc are all mountable. There is a lot of high cover throughout Union. Get on top and start taking shots. Most of the time the enemy either won't be able to get you at all or they will at least take a long time to get to you in that situation.

Keep an axe handy at all times but only use it for extra tough enemies or if you get surrounded and have no choice.

Funnel enemies to windows or crawl spaces- both are pretty frequent and you can clear them faster than the enemies can. For example during the (super early Chapter 3 spoiler)
Church ambush you can immediately jump out the window and then take the enemies at your leisure either as they stumble through the window or take the long way around.

I guess I just wasted all my upgrade gel. I spent it on Predator. You're supposed to get a red arrow to pop up when you can do the attack and it never pops up.

So yea don't buy Predator in the stealth tree.

It pops up, the range is just awful. So yeah, it's definitely a waste.

Shotgun is fantastic to knock enemies flat so you move in for the stomp. You can easily CC 2-3 enemies in one shot in close quarters with the shotgun.

I like the shotgun, except during those times where enemies run up to you, you have the reticle squarely in the center of their torso, you fire, and magically the bullets don't hit because your shotgun is protruding out of the back of their hurtboxes.

nope, did it only once for the critical rate! i used part on almost every weapons, here's my most used weapon :

1. stealth
2. handgun
3. shotgun
4. crossbow
5. sniper

That's the same with me, but it has nothing to do with overall usefulness, and everything to do with ammo. The only reason to bother with the handgun is because of the ammo surplus. I still end up having to use 5-6 bullets on average per enemy though.

Did you simply dump everything into raising critical twice then? Because they don't do anything than swarm from a single headshot for me.

These impressions sound ROUGH, GAF isn't liking this baby.

I was happy i got to paid the game an hour ago (but they won't give me until next friday) but now its like 😔

Plenty of folks enjoying it as well but I assure you most likely they are still too busy playing to post. I'm in love with the game and a huge fan of 1. Playing on nightmare had been super intense but fantastic.

I wouldn't be so down on the stealth focus if the crouch walk speed wasn't so fucking slow.

I agree with this and I think the option for faster crouch movement will be my next upgrade for sure. So far I've upgraded for Bottle Break and Push Kick.

Thanks for these, I'll put them into practice. Will probably just look up where the Shotgun is, I somehow seem to have missed it despite having played Chapter 3 for a decent chunk of time.

The environmental stuff like climbing up onto things I haven't been taking advantage of so far, I'll keep my eye out for that.

It's upgradeable.
I don't like putting literally every little thing behind different upgrade paths because that's exactly what happens. Some players get frustrated by being so handicapped early on.
At least you can fix it eventually.

you'll get a scripted scene here later!
Thanks Kain!
I'm asking myself if that counts as a spoiler.

I actually did have a little smile when
you first see the kitty when coming out of Seb's office.

Yeah me too. Loving it so far. I'm up to Chapter 6.

Got a question about a certain monster from early in the game that keeps popping up.
You meet her in a house that was haunted. The one that looks a bit like Laura and has the floaty white outfit, everything goes cold and blue when she shows up. Is there a way to kill her? I'm just running away from her right now and she disappears. Am I doing that right?
.

Good lord i'm still not done with chapter 3. I'm too slow and take too many breaks. This open world stuff really is boring to me so far.

That doesn't sound half bad does it?

i never played Last of Us :P

You are missing out my friend.

How similar is this to the first game Kidman DLCs?

It takes the stealth mechanic from the the DLCs, but other than that it's more similar to the base game of the first game.

I ended up getting it late as well. That will happen if you don't follow the resonance locations in a strict and linear fashion (or just stumble upon it I guess).

I actually did have a little smile when
you first see the kitty when coming out of Seb's office.

Me too, until I noticed its zombie eyes.

The most astounding thing about this for me is that it's almost a completely gameplay-driven survival horror. The first few times things happen there are cutscenes but after that scripted things happen constantly and you're in control the entire time.

Backtracking to a safe place and three zombies burst out of a garage door, and you only have 6 rounds? They're scripted to turn towards you immediately but you think fast and duck behind a bin. You manage to improvise, using bottles to distract them and taking them all down without wasting a shot.

Incredible, and super tense.

this game makes me wish more studios gave open world survival horror a try

Yup.

Another 90 minutes put in there and this is completely blowing me away. The way they've carefully designed this open world so it's not a sandbox but it feels dangerous and like there are horrifying dangerous creatures really everywhere.

Some proper edgelord voice acting from Sebastian.

It's legit like a survival horror Solid Snake.

I fucking love it.

For the shotgun, IIRC
I think you go to the right after the first safe house and down the lane of houses near the pile of bodies. Should be the first or second house on the left. You will find a computer that will open up a major sidequest area.

One thing I was worried about was the side quests and open world. I thought it would make me over power by gathering resource before moving to next chapter. But god damn, in nightmare difficulty gathering resource becomes very risky.

Didn't care so much for the first game. There were a few chapters that I adored, but for the most part I thought the game was alright.

I'm loving this one so far. Exploring in Ch. 3 is loads of fun. I'm a sucker for stealth kills, so that's all I've been doing lmao.

???

Also, those that keep saying this is like RE4 are out of their minds. It's very loosely similar, but then it's just as similar to Silent Hill and TLOU just like the first game. The combat isn't even comparable other than hey, you upgrade shit and you kind of, but not exactly shoot in a similar perspective (for all of two seconds).

No way. There's loads of RE4 in here, just like there's loads of SH, loads of TLoU and loads of TEW. Having other titles/series woven more obviously into the DNA doesn't negate the clear RE4 impact.

- more righteous police officer vibe (like Leon)
- first encounter
in a house, creepy domestic style
- first time you see multiple enemies
down the street
is very Village like and lets you approach however you like (not as much as the first Village encounter but that's because it gradually ramps up)
- the immediate
Church
event (and Sebastien's reaction) feels straight out of RE4

This is how it feels so far, does anyone know if the horror emphasis gets cranked up as the game progresses? Has anyone gotten far enough yet to say?

If so, I might blitz through the open-world-ish part and get to the stuff I came for.

There is secret/optional stuff very early on (like within the first couple of hours) which goes way more horror. It was pretty freaky. Minor early sidequest spoilers:
I'm talking about in the Armory basement area, that scary Hag-like zombie. Looked like the zombie woman from the end of the movie Rec. She was disturbing me so I distracted her with a bottle and got up behind her for a stab - and holy fuck she can survive a stealth attack! Legit spine tingles like 'shit this is exactly what I DIDN'T WANT HER TO DO' and I only just managed to fend her off.

It's clear the game is going to branch a lot and provide a lot of linear horror, too.

Loving the game so far, I really like the semi open world as it gives you a variety of routes to your objectives and i'm just a sucker for exploring.

Quick question though (Chapter 3 Enemy Spoiler)
Is there a way to fight the singing woman monster who randomly spawns in?
I haven't attempted it yet for fear of an instakill but i'm curious

My bugbears thus far (super duper minor)

- I killed an enemy before they 'woke up' (they were sitting against a wall) and the green gel fell out the map :(
- the default crouch-walk speed is definitely too slow. The first upgrade completely fixes that, but still
- I didn't even realise that stun-kicks were locked behind the skill tree... that is a bit much. Stun-kicks are a hugely important part of A-RE and TEW gameplay. The shooting is too finicky in this for it to be fair
- I wish there was a simple crosshair or laser-dot sight option instead of just shitty immersion-breaking crosshairs
- you have to fiddle with Sensitivity in the options to get it to feel right

But seriously these are like 5 minor points against like 20 huge things I'm loving about this.

How similar is this to the first game Kidman DLCs?

Not very similar. They've very claustrophobic and you only get a gun for like 5-10% of the experience.

In TEW2 it's very open and you've always got gameplay options (pistol, knife, distraction, stealth, lots of avenues of escape/approach) but the enemies are very dangerous and numerous.

It pops up, the range is just awful. So yeah, it's definitely a waste.

Watch the first minute of this video (skip to 30seconds actually)

https://go.twitch.tv/videos/182041187

It doesn't work.

I'm actually kind of pissed and don't want to play at the moment.

This is what should be happening - https://i.imgur.com/IZA8vpw.png

I wasted 12k for something that literally does nothing. Sometimes I can get Seb to do some sort of shoulder charge but he does it the opposite way of where the enemy is at.

Anybody else enjoy going into the Black Lodge in the intro level?

The minute I saw those red curtains...

Also the painting that's a reflection of the wall behind you with the red door in it... just like Laura Palmer looking at the painting in her bedroom

whats the suggested difficulty to begin ?

I like a healthy dose of challenge.Maybe survival then nightmare on other playthroughs ?

I'd recommend normal. Nightmare is a good challenge but there's no aim assist and the enemies are fast as fuck. You die in 3 hits. There's no hud information for stealth so it would seem nebulous for a while, but the difficulty demands you do a lot of stealth. It'll just be a rough ride.

Hehehe wait till you see how you regain health in the safe zones

Is there an optimal way to kill the crawling
"human centipede"
enemies?

So far, stealth works on everything except these guys. I never get the prompt, and even when they get knocked down from a headshot I can't stomp them. They seem to just be ammo sinks.

They're ammo sinks and they suck although I like their design otherwise. Axe if you have one.

.

Apparently, doing this side quest....
enables her to haunt you randomly through the game
also another spoiler for those wondering
The guide states that doing that side quest and another with the enemy will lead to being able to learn some more information after a part that forces you to run into said enemy

Just got the shotgun, oh my, i'm in love! Sounds amazing.

EDIT - Another awesome thing I'm enjoying, throwing bottles at their faces to stun enemies and then running up and slitting their throats from the front, very satisfying.

After clearing most (it's hard to know for sure) of the Chapter 3 map on Nightmare, the first mob on Chapter 4 killed me a few times.

I don't seem to have the right gear. Some exploding bolts would change the whole game. They were so common in the first game, I didn't think I'd need to be so stingy with them. I think I preferred a universal bolt part as in EW1, because I could taylor my crafts to my play style (and upgrades). Now upgrading bolts seems like a risky use of weapon parts because what if you only find crafting parts for other bolt types?

Haven't messed much with smoke as a time-buyer... there's no damage improvement, just a chance to get a clean shot off, right?

EDIT
Also agree about the hitboxes up-close. In this fight in particular, I'm waiting till the last minute to max damage and hit multiple targets (also due to fire rate and mob size), frustrating to feel like you are shooting through enemies at point-blank range. Like the game but hope this is improved in a patch

I'm excited.

Chapter 7
is another open world level, a bit smaller than the first, but. I can't believe how pumped I am for it.

how often does it save? I've just been wandering around and would be really pissed if I lost it all. I just (in Ch 3):
went to Armory and got the shotgun and came back to Cedar Ave.

Also I'll explain my thoughts fully later, but so far The Evil Within 2 feels like if you blended the original game, Resident Evil 1/4, Last of Us, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid 3, Layers of Fear, and Fallout into a a game. It surprisingly works in my opinion.

Just picked it up. The Handgun -> Shotgun upgrade is basically like finally bringing a gun to a gun fight, instead of a knife. It's insane how much stronger it is than the Handgun. Close-quarters encounters are much more manageable now, and after two locker keys that dumped gunpowder on me, I'm suddenly swimming in ammo.

I think that's the fastest I've ever gone from "Two shots left, better knife everything" to "I am walking arsenal, might as well blow up everything in sight."

It's all good though, because now I can still play conservatively while knowing that I can bring the pain if necessary. Like in one of the ambushes I mentioned earlier in the thread.

Just improved the crouch movement speed as well. I would recommend doing that ASAP. Makes a huge difference not just in successfully pulling off stealth kills, but also in moving around feeling a lot better. The base speed is too slow.

I'm still only in Chapter 3, but so far it definitely feels like EW1 x TLOU. The "Silent Hill" ingredient I'm hoping becomes more prominent later.

Legit in the conversation for most satisfying shotgun of the generation. What an amazing kick and sound it has.

No lies detected, this is the true successor to the F.E.A.R. shotgun.

I deleted all my saves, gonna restart I guess. Predator ability indicator just does not show on Nightmare difficulty I guess. I turned the difficulty down and there it is, plain as day. Might as well just restart and invest in something else if I'ma play on that difficulty. I see someone on steam say the Kick isn't working properly either though.

it's kind of bullshit that throwing a bottle next to ones lying down won't wake them up but they get triggered if you pick something up next to them.

It's bullshit you can't just stomp them before they even stand up or get triggered to stand up.

Don't understand why they wouldn't let you do this, it rewards careful attention to detail and is a lot funner than suddenly triggering a zombie when it was just part of the background scenery before, feels really gamey. RE6 was so terrible about this too.

Speaking of the comparisons to Resident Evil, this game feels a lot like RE2 for some reason.

The spatialized sound design in this game is amazing. I'm using the sony golds, and when that cat started meowing I seriously thought there was a cat outside my living room window and I went to look for it.

So Machine Games' excuse that their sound design was so godawful because they were using idtech seems to be a bit bullshit.

I really fucking hope they figured it out for New Collosus.

I see that they kept the writing from the first game in regards to "Man Seb is really, really dumb' in that he keeps asking if things are really happening or he's crazy. Dude, we've been over this, you know exactly what's happening.

I thought it was just a weird effect of parts of the first game maybe getting shuffled around, because in that game, Seb immediately forgets that he's not in the real world despite being told multiple times by the person who helped design it.

Is it possible to switch the camera alignment from left to right ?

I feel like thats really important depend on your situation in stealth
Cant seem to do it.

Went for nightmare.

I have no idea when I might replay this so I might aswell go for the full experien
