The FFXI resurgence

What was your other thread about play online?

Am I still eligible for free loot?
It was a giveaway for some "Mog Bonzanza" weapons, which were weapons you'd normally win in a lottery-style event: buy a ticket with a number, and see if your number won the rank 1 prize at the end of the month, which would be one of the weapons.

Unfortunately it ended on June 9th.

FFXI still around is the oddest Square Enix thing to me. I'm glad it's still there for people to enjoy, but it's continued existence seems to go against everything Square is about.

Good thing there's private servers already.

I don't understand. If FFXI still makes money for Square, why would its existence be odd?
Because Square has a very skewed sense/definition of success, I wouldn't surprised if Yoshi P gets asked about ending support for the game from the executives at least 4 times a year. The resources spent on keeping FF11 alive and accessible (support, playonline, etc), could be folded even further into the FF14 team. The fact that they're keeping it alive is both good and odd for present day Square. They cancelled the mobile game they were making, so the FFXI brand is clearly not something they're super attached to.

Yeah I was willing to jump on with the Reboot but the moment Nexon cancelled it I lost interest in this game.

They recently just had a FFXI promo with 14 offering subscription to XI at 50% off. That and FF14 is not in a great place right now so it doesn't surprise me people are trying something else.

Didn't XIV get a mobile version of the game? Highly likely the development resources for the XI mobile remake were rolled into that.

I was sad too, but I can't imagine that it would've been any good.

I feel like the biggest reason why it's still online is because it's a mainline title, can't have one of those be completely inaccessible.

The resources spent is very small, whole dedicated FF11 team is like 6 people and they ask others to do things if required.
FF11 profitability should be very high relative to expenses (though absolute numbers are moderate) and require minimum attention, so there is no point to close them.

It still brings money at zero efforts, so it make sense to keep them around.
UO and EQ1 still around too and they are even older.

XIV sucks now and sub numbers are slowly dwindling so they need more money. It's not surprising more are open to the idea of trying FFXI. Which is a much better game. Vana'diel is such a wonderful world to get lost in.

FF11 is one of the best MMOs ever and easily one of the best FF games ever. The main problem this game has nowadays is PlayOnline. But it would take more resources than it's worth to untangle the game from it...

If I were to ever consider coming back, I don't even know how I could get my old account back. Had MNK, RDM, BLU and PLD at like 90+ and some decent gear that I would never want to give up. I had ALOT of time invested in this game back in the day but thinking about all the hassle it would take to get it up and running, set all new macros getting myself up to speed with everything they added since I left, would take way more time than it's worth for me.

Most of the PlayOnline process has been extracted out into Square's account management website. It's mostly just a glorified launcher nowadays.

I love how XI thrives whenever XIV does badly lol.

I remember when they added Abyssea as a last hurrah for XI, upping the cap to 99 and breaking a lot of the mechanics and balance, since they probably didn't think XI would around much longer when XIV 1.0 launched. Then when XIV 1.0 did badly and people went back to XI, they had to fix their mess and keep XI alive.

Maybe I do need to go back into it, then. I do miss Vana'diel from time to time...

I played it on Xbox 360 for awhile and I really liked it so I would like to jump back in. Problem is, I no longer have my 360 and moved over from Windows to Mac and SteamOS. I need to look into it and see what I've got that can run it.

Edit: It's on Steam and can play pretty well on Steam Deck. Well, now I know what I'm doing this week! ☺️

If they fix the sign-in process and remaster the game then they will finally entice thousands of people like myself who don't want to bother with this:

Last MMO I found great and also one that forces peoples to group together rather than being a solo adventure like most of them are nowadays, uh maybe that has something to do with how well perceived the game is still today

Making groups and grind together was part of the fun and you get to know them

If I were to ever consider coming back, I don't even know how I could get my old account back.

Same

The SE login situation was a nightmare even back in the days, but now it's on what I know are non existing email links to an account and I imagine since last I played, they likely wiped out everything

It's because the genre grew up with it's playerbase. Can't keep making no-life, full-time experiences when your primary base is 30+ in age.

Fwiw I don't think they've ever wiped accounts or character data. So your character/account is still probably there.

However, I was in the same situation as you probably 10 or so years ago, and to get my account info back, they required a notarized form to be signed saying that I am who I say I am. Idk if that's still the procedure, or if they still do account restorations, but it couldn't hurt to shoot them an email.

Also, unless the account is sentimental to you (mine was) creating a new character/account and surpassing your old one nowadays probably wouldn't take longer than a month.

As an adult with responsibilities, I appreciate how retail plays now. I've accomplished more now than I ever did back in the day.

With that said, if they did ever make a classic server alongside retail, I'd absolutely make a character on there and play concurrently with retail in a heartbeat.

What platforms do people play this on? PS2, pc, 360, Xbox?

They should get a port onto PS4/5.

PC only these days... even if its still a PS2 game underneath!

Truth is though very few people actually play vanilla these days. Short of item duping and pos-hacking most mods and adds-ons are unofficially tolerated. For instance I'd suspect the overwhelming majority of players use scripting aids like GearSwap to automate and optimize performance.

That PlayOnline thingie sure is a blast from the past. I got it running though. I hope I don't have to setup it again as it was a bit tedious.

Wow never expected that notarized approval but cool they don't just say tough luck

I would have a lot of nostalgia with my account not for high levels or anything but it's the RDM I had built and it had a lot of stories attached to it, back when gaming-age also had a guild in FFXI.

I played it a ton back in the original run, but I dont have time for MMORPGs these days. Too many other games to play.

If it's any incentive, it's an MMORPG in name only for the most part nowadays. If someone were interested in playing through the storylines for instance (which are some of the best FF stories) it can be casually solo'd.

The MMORPG/group-oriented aspect only kicks in during endgame, for people who'd want to stick around for that.

They've changed FFXI to the point where you can solo it? Well that's not the game I remember.

So like sky can be soloed now or are they just not worth it anymore?
Both yeah, there's nothing worthwhile in regular Sky anymore, but it can be solo'd.

There is a higher level variant of Sky called Escha, which is a black and white version of the zone. There is some value there, and some of the content still requires a group. But it's almost entirely an endgame zone.

Anything particular you didn't like about it back then? They've revamped it quite a bit since then.
I just remember it took so much time and patience to achieve/gain anything. IIRC, I reached a point where I needed to get 3 keys or something. I called it quits when I realised it was so early on and the amount of time and effort it took to get to that point. I was a BLM and then took White mage as 2nd job.
Edit: a pic I took. This was actually 2008. I must have been chuffed to get the ability to ride a chocobo lol

Ah yeah, I think I know which part you're talking about. The quest for the Kazham airship pass required 3 keys, which would've been early on (level ~25 or so). Back then, that was a majorly painful undertaking.

If it's any consolation, they've made great strides in getting rid of tedious quests like those, and quickening the pace of progression. That quest in particular can be skipped entirely now by paying for the airship pass directly.
