The final Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Are late night talk shows like The Tonight Show or Late Night big in other countries? Like is there a Jay Leno/Dave Letterman type of personality in say, England? Or Germany? Or Brazil? One who's been doing it for decades and is overall pretty well-liked and respected?

Or is this genre of entertainment purely an American institution?

There are various other shows in other countries, but the actual Johnny Carson Tonight Show format that is present in almost every US talk show is usually exclusively seen on those from US.

I would seriously doubt it.

I like Ferguson, but I can't see him taking over for Dave.

hahaha, no. Dave will likely bring in a woman to replace him, just to shake things up... I'm thinking Tina Fey or Amy Poehler...

Ferguson's style would never work at 11:30.

Noted. I haven't watched Ferguson in awhile but I agree that his style wouldn't work well at 11:30.

Can't imagine Poehler or Fey going to CBS...unless the money is really, really good. I guess it makes me curious who the successor to the Late Show will be.

Jay and Dave sit back and let their guests talk about what they're there to promote. It's boring.

Fallon actually has conversations and engages the guests, as a fan. And the games he plays with them are fun to.

I like Fallon's enthusiasm, but his ass-kissing is just over the top.

His last Late Night is tomorrow; I wonder if it's worth making a thread for.

I would think Fallon is going to have the same issues Conan had, but Fallon is even more awkward. I dunno.

Conan's only issue was that Jay had a 10pm talk show that no one was watching. It was so bad that the local affiliates were complaining to NBC because their ratings had tanked so bad they couldn't sell advertising during their news casts. If people don't watch the news there is no one left to watch the Tonight Show.

But no, I don't want to watch Jay look constipated for an hour with Billy fucking Crystal. He's getting the boot because not a single damned person in the 18-35 demo gives a shit about Billy Crystal, Jay Leno, or seeing Garth Brooks appear on the show for the 22nd time.

I'd rather watch Kimmel just to see Matt Damon finally appear on the show despite the fact that Kimmel's shtick makes me want to strangle him.

Some enjoyable pre-show reading!

Jay Leno was good at being bad (A.V. Club)

Why we'll miss hating Jay Leno (Grantland)

Also, Leno's top targets for jokes during his run on the show:

1. Bill Clinton — 4,607 jokes.
2. George W. Bush — 3,239 jokes.
3. Al Gore — 1,026 jokes.
4. Barack Obama — 1,011 jokes.
5. Hillary Clinton — 939 jokes.
6. O.J. Simpson — 795 jokes.
7. Dick Cheney — 673 jokes.
8. Michael Jackson — 505 jokes.
9. Monica Lewinsky — 454 jokes.
10. Bob Dole — 452 jokes.

Is he really not doing ANYTHING for NBC anymore? The man's basically a virus, he's stated that he has to work nonstop or he loses his will to live. So what concession prize are they giving him this time?
$15,000,000 to leave early. His contract technically expires in September. He's done this time though, last time he was still under contract with NBC, that's why they gave him The Jay Leno Show.

How many more years does Dave have at the Late Show?

Back in October last year, Dave signed on through 2015. I remember reading an article on Letterman/CBS somewhere with Moonves saying the timeslot and show are Dave's as long as he wants it.

Is it safe to assume Ferguson would take over when Dave retires?

Craig doesn't want the 11:30 slot. His style of show would NEVER work at 11:30.

That said, we need more Craig GIF's:

So has Fallon improved at telling jokes during his monologue at all? His sketch stuff is fine but I remember that was always his weakest link. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a huge ratings drop.

It didn't help either when it seemed like NBC knew Fallon can't tell jokes and shortened his monologue to 2-3 jokes.

It's so cringeworthy. There are so many more talented comedians out there that deserve that role over him. Outside of making impressions Fallon is horrible. When the band is the highlight of your show you know you suck

I don't understand why someone who doesn't like him is watching right now, but whatever. I'm glad he got one last OJ joke in there.
Because it's an event! Despite the current state of The Tonight Show, it used to be an entertainment juggernaut, and a very high-quality institution. I've seen way more Leno over my lifetime than I've enjoyed, but there was a lonely time in my life when him and Conan helped me through some rough nights. Despite not liking the man's humor, I still have an interest in his legacy as a host.

The video montage of people telling Jay what he should do next was great. Too bad they didn't get Conan or Letterman, but the Obama cameo was pretty great.

That's funny, since he's the kind of guy that doesn't care about money. As long as he has enough to buy old cars and keep them up he seems to just care about working nonstop. I wonder what he's doing next since there's no way he's out for good.

I don't begrudge Jay at all. Would love to see him host a Top Gear type show after he's done.

That being said, this doesn't have a fraction of the heart that Conan's last show had.

Also, as for Dave, I thought they were going to try to bring Jon Stewart over. Same people paying the contract.

I have always been a much bigger fan of Conan, but I believe Jay Leno has for a long time had by far the best monologues. His show has also always had kind of a comfy feeling to it. It's just good clean fun.

I can agree with this. But on the flip side, I hate when you get hosts that make it about themselves. They talk too much, and the guest doesn't get to say much.

I think Fallon does a really good job getting people to talk about interesting stuff.

What's gonna make it worse for Fallon I think is if NBC tries to make him more mainstream due to an earlier time slot. The same thing happened when Conan did the tonight show.

edit: Conan took a fun little jab at NBC tonight on his show. Saying "The olympics have started tonight on NBC, it's nice to see them airing a show where someone is passing the torch"
