If true, why was the rule green-lit, only then to be banned later? The FIA are trying to cut down costs in F1, yet they tease teams with doing development work into a component that could reduce lap times and then take it away a few weeks later. Daft - yet again.

Indeed. More rule changing that will not reduce costs, but rather increase them.

Looks like it's confirmed: http://www.pitpass.com/45499-Exclusive-Reactive-suspension-banned

The FIA has moved to ban the reactive suspension system believed to have been developed by Lotus, Pitpass has learned.

Last week we revealed that the system, which had initially been approved by the FIA, would likely be banned under Article 3.15 of the sport's Techincal Regulations which govern moveable aerodynamic devices.

A communication from the governing body to all teams on Friday confirmed that the system has been banned, stating that it relies on a change in length of a suspension member, including those that use the movement of the brake caliper, contravened the Technical Regulations.

So Lotus previously had run it by FIA sometime last year and they'd approved, and now it's been revoked? Is that right?

Edit: Just read the article proper. That's a bit shit. Their topsy-turvy nature regarding regulations shits me up the wall. Were they always this bad?

I really hope its not true. I still can't see it on autosport or ESPN

If it is, well, I'm sure that Ferrari is behind it

Yup, because Ferrari like sabotaging themselves by spending time and resources designing a system and getting it approved by the FIA only for them to campaign to ban it a couple weeks later.

I'm convinced that people are posting stupid shit here just to get a reaction out of me.

More than just costs, its cost a week and half of development time for some teams. May not sound like much, but when you think about how fast teams develop during the season in-between races, its definitely noteworthy, compounded by the fact that the teams dont have to worry about race weekends and 100% of their focus is on development. Its a very costly thing for teams to have to go back on.

dude, I don't give a rats ass what you think I don't even read ur posts!

for the argument's sake, Ferrari were pushing for the ban on blown diffuser although they've "spent time and resources designing the system" as well..

Pretty much, last year mclaren developed a fancy exhaust system which relied on a expensive material to cope with the heat, at the last minute before testing the FIA banned that material leaving mclaren grandly fucked and trying to use a exhaust system which spent more time melting itself then anything else. In the end they had to redesign a massive section of the rear of the car and the floor and run it completely untested in the first race.

I see a few, obviously not exhaustive, possibilities:

The FIA's clarification seems to be very precise, which leads me to suspect that that another team has 'exposed' the full implications/workings of such systems, while those that had submitted their systems for checks had left certain details out.

OR

The FIA passed Lotus' system, but have since seen some other teams' solutions which are more extreme and have decided to kill them all off before it spiralled out of control.

OR

The FIA's initial judgement of legality was preliminary, and having had more time to research the full implications have deemed it illegal. (Although I saw no mention of it being preliminary, so I'd think this one is less likely)

I expect all this to blow up big-time again during/after testing as well, as the true impact of the ban on teams' relative performance is exposed.

Ferrari wanted the blown diffuser banned in spite of having developed it because it still wasn't on par with Red Bull's version and they couldn't perfect is as much as other teams did. Banning the ride adjustment system isn't in Ferrari's interest mainly because Red Bull have said that they don't have such a system developed, so Ferrari would have had an advantage there. If you ask me, it's more likely that Red Bull was behind the ban than Ferrari (although it wasn't necessarily either one).

I severely doubt Ferrari are anything to do with this ban. They were one of the first teams (after Lotus) to get a system approved so you can assume would be one of the best developed.

If I had to guess I would say Red Bull (who seemed uninterested in the system) or one of the middle/back of the grid teams (who would struggle with resources to develop this new system alongside the rest of their car) who were the influence behind this ban.

The way rules and regulations are decided and changed in F1 are pretty ridiculous. I mean, just look as Silverstone last year.

Pretty embarrassing. A sport should be more organised. Not fair on teams, drivers or spectators.

Didnt the FIA was it was fine a few weeks ago?
What changed?

At least its banned before the start of the season, instead of trying to ban it half way through.

Red Bull? That's not possible. They're the Good Guys™.
This year is going to be fun on F1-GAF.
It will be awesome, just like last year.

Is the first test usually broadcast in some way or do we just get some photos of the cars? I actually can't remember how it worked the years I followed F1 more closely. (I think last year I only saw some photos of the cars on track)

Nothing live, might get a few seconds of video on SSN if were lucky. There will definitely be lots of photos though.

I think it's in the way it's implemented and described to the governing body.

Going back to the double deck diffuser in 2009, a lot of the teams were upset that they were told the idea was illegal, yet Brawn, Toyota and Williams passed scrutineering with the diffuser in place.

Chances are, Lotus and Ferrari could yet roll up in Melbourne with the system in place and pass scrutineering if the way they've gotten it to work doesn't infringe on the FIA's regulation as is written.

See this in that thread from the OP?
Yesterday, I recieved an e-mail of Rob Marshall, Chief Designer of Red Bull Racing and therefore main technical responsable under a man, called Adrian Newey (maybe someone heard something about that guy ). Anyway he offers me, original text, "the opportunity of a year long work experience at Red Bull. Would you be interested in such a position?" If I am, I should reply directly to him and not to the HR department.
It looks like (I don't know exactly yet) that I've to do an interview in Milton Keynes anytime. If I'm successfull, I'll take my bags for spending a year in England. Nothing fixed yet, but the chance is there.
Either way, I'll keep you up to date...
Amazing. In the least, probably an opportunity for him to design some papercraft merch, I guess? Maybe something more...

I’m OUT, OUT of the hospital! Hahaha! Trips to the Caribbean are over rated. Where else can you get 3 meals a day delivered to you for free (CDN Healthcare)? Plus, if you act up a bit you can even get free narcotics! You guys/gals are missing out.

But seriously here is the Coles Notes version:

Sooo Wednesday night I passed out with no warning. I was at my computer and asked for water then like a light switch I was out. Half of Toronto's Fire Trucks & paramedics arrive. Off to good ol' William Osler Emergency, wait, wait, X-Rays then bumped up to Critical Cardiac Unit early Thursday Morning. A few ECG's, IV's. Friday more ECG's then an ultrasound on my right lung as they found fluid around it. So then they want a sample which involved a 10cm long needle in my back, through my ribcage (which the Dr. kept on hitting) & sucking some fluid out. Then a few X-rays to make sure the Dr. didn't puncture my lung. Ultrasound on my heart, ECG again. Other miscellaneous procedures later and this morning I was cleared for discharge. One cardiologist thought they would put in a pace maker but my main cardiologist vetoed that as well as resetting my heart and basically said for now to let "sleeping dogs lie."

Not a coherent paragraph at all but a Coles' Notes version like I said.

Back to F1, I've got almost all my media accounts and tomorrow I'll start trying website layouts after :)

I've got some cool F1 documentaries to upload too!

Perfectly coherent but holy hell, what an ordeal. Hopefully you're not too shaken and it was just a one-off.

Glad you're back, in any sense :)

I got pretty excited when I saw that email. It is coming!

I'm not going to put down a deposit because I want to be in between turns 15-16 overlooking the Hockenheim-like stadium section. Should be able to see the cars coming off the backstretch too if I can get up high enough. I'll go grandstand some other year or maybe for the V8 Supercars or MotoGP. :D

The new Circuit of the Americas site looks really great too.

At Saturday, my RB7 will go on. I've a hard exam (thermodynamics) on Friday, that's the reason why it stands still at the mo.

Cheers,
Paul

I wish him all the best

thanks :)

I am sorry but the FIA is joke. Only in formula 1 you will find risk taking and innovation banned. I feel for lotus. All that money and research time just gone to waste.
