The Formula 1 2011 Season of Vettel Fingering the Competition |OT|

The conditions in Montreal helped to make it a good race.

I don't think anybody hates Vettel personally. It just that a competative event should be, you know, competative?

This isn't the first year that one racer/team has dominated F1A. Something needs to change to balance the teams and provide some competition.

I've gotta say I'm going to disagree with you again :p

In my opinion, the change to the much wider front wings was a mistake, or at least it's not one I agree with. I think having the wings being wider than the car itself kind of makes wheel-to-wheel racing less...wheel-to-wheel like I guess. I don't know, it's just something I grew to dislike somewhat after watching so many drivers ruin their front wings in 2009 & 2010, but at least now it appears they all know where their wings are.

how about the rules, i mean you cant disagree that the tyres have made things much more interesting this year.
and they just have to figure drs out, because it can make races more fun to watch.
man i remember watching mika and shumi fight for every race back in the day, that was some fun.
2002 was one of the worst years with ferrari dominating everything.

I agree with all that for sure, but I was just referring to the front wings :p

I find myself agreeing with you once again, I mean come on, the rakes we've had to endure over the past three years are abominations compared to the wings pre-2009.

This is Formula 1 at its finest in terms of technical regulations (bar the grooved tyres) and aesthetics.

The F2002 is regarded as the fastest F1 car of all time. Truly godlike. The champ went out with a win at Imola 2003.

So, I have to imagine that Vettel and Webber are on pretty different strategies and who makes those decisions, the drivers or background guys at the pits?

And god, that F2002 is beautiful. I looks like everything made from one giant mold. I swear some of the pieces on the current gens look like they were welded on last second (which they might have, I'm not too clear on the tech aspect of F1 yet).

it more or less is a collaborate effort. also some of the different strategies come from Webbers driving style which has quite a bit more tyre degradation than Vettels.
Thou supposedly he is getting better at that - that's what Newey said anyways.

I was going to mention that 2002 was indeed glorious and everything went down the shitter five year later, but then ...

What is wrong with you? Did you play too much need for speed underground as a kid?

People forget how supremely dominant the F2002 was in Schumacher's hands. He did not finish lower than 2nd position in the whole of the 2002 season. Jesus christ. It was the fastest car by far in full race trim in all but one of the races it competed in (Brazil being the exception on it's debut, MS still won). Ferrari scored more points than the entire field COMBINED. So when thinking about Vettel dominating....Red Bull haven't got jack shit on that sort of performance.

First of all: F*CK YOU!

But yeah, my memory is playing tricks on me. The post-2008 cars are SO FUGLY that 2007~2008 cars look beautiful compared.

Thinking better now, id chose the 2005~2006 cars.

FUCK, I just remembered the Honda's 2008 aberration. xD Poor Button & Barrichello.

EDIT: I HATE NFS Underground + The Fast & the Furious customization style.

The aero guys really went batshit insane toward the end of that era. It's like there was an unofficial contest in the paddock rewarding the team that would put the most crazy things on the car while still passing regulation checks...

I agree with those saying that the older F1 were the best looking ones. Just go back to that, put some slick tires and we've got beautiful competitive cars again !
I was already facepalming back when Mosley presented the current hideous design in sketches and the first real cars just confirmed that it was awful to look at.

This is his first gearbox problem this season, isn't it?
First major failure, but he is having problems with his gearbox/clutch for the whole season so far - this could explain his bad starts.

also, will we see wet race in Silverstone?

Nope, 2004 had endurance rules in place. 2002 was completely pure breed. Qualifying specials, full access no parc-ferme, absolute edge of the performance envelope. They could have gone a lot faster in 2004 with the original 2002 rules.

Chilling. We're so lucky that he and his co-driver got off with the injuries that they did.

Just think about if Kubica does make a return some day. The first time he drives an F1 car again will be such a glorious moment for all F1 fans.
Hopefully he won't pull a Massa and he'll kick MORE arse than pre-accident.

Ouch. I always imagined those barriers would be more deflecty and less break apart and penetratey.
Indeed.

His recovery after his Montreal crash was epic, I expect no less this time.

Valencia was such a boring race only made exciting by Schumi driving like a demon with a broken wing and actually overtaking with it.

Think Vettel is great, but if he keeps winning races like this its going to get old fast, real fast. Love Schumacher but his constant winning bored everyone then and Vettel's will as well.
Cars from 2002 were sexy, minus the awful grooved tires

So nice and simple

I love those old cars, too. Except for how exposed the driver is. Not to mention no lateral head restraint at all. It sends shivers down my spine.

They'd better make some hardcore changes to the Valencia track if they want to make it interesting. I'm talking ramps, power-ups and pitfalls here.

Correct.

edit: Just noticed the dumb typo. Fixed.

Bah..I'd rather have Barcelona to be honest.

Well, as long as they revamp the Valencia track, then I'm a happy man.

Seems like they have an obsession for picking the worst Spanish tracks even when choosing between two terrible one...

Yeah, not everyone went overboard obviously, but in that same race :

This thread has turned into eulogy for the F2002. You can't deny that it was the most dominant car of the modern F1 era, but the RB7 has the chance to replicate that form; pole position in every race and six out of eight wins. Both brilliant designs but produced two very lacklustre seasons.

Regulation changes I have no problem with, the rules need to be refreshed consistently to keep the sport competitive and I don't think it is impressive having fast lap times with 'loose' regulations. The RB7 will be remembered for a long time because it has dominated and delivered good lap times(2 seconds down on 2002) at a time when it is more difficult to extract extra performance (I know the Pirelli tyres help but it is still an impressive effort by the Red Bull team).

The winglets were awful and the cars looked disgusting, I was very glad to see them banned.

Webber had pole in Spain.
