Even before that incident it seemed like he was already struggling? Not sure how much weight to give to each factor: tires vs aero damage vs something else?

We'll wait for the reports, but I could see it clearly. Half the vertical structure on the right hand side was missing.

Good race. Awesome recovery from Webber, Newey needs to fix that shit. Vettel boringly awesome as ever. Hamlolton, and Alolnso will be disappointed. McLaren looked pretty good though.

WTF at Mclaren? Putting Lewis twice on hard tires, making him stop early on the 1st set on hards while he was maintaining his pace? Even a newbie to this sport could tell there was going to be trouble.

They ran out of option tires lol

Well then, another race, another win for Vettel, no matter what happens, he always seems to be above it all.

Button a great 2nd, another drive who just kept on pounding along and moving forwards. Heidfeld and incredible 3rd place, that Renault is really food it seems (Kubica will be crying somewhere).

Behind that, Webber pulls a great 4th out of his arse, and the Ferraris follow. To be fair, Alonso and Massa were pretty competitive, much more so than quali so kudos for that.

Hamilton 7th and will be cursing Alonso for thwacking him earlier, Kobayashi8th (Sauber good again), Schumacher 9th and Di Resta a fantastic first point for Force India!

So, onto China then! No rest for the wicked as of course, it is next weekend!

After about 10 years of ignoring F1, I started watching halfway the race due to this thread and the BBC Sport text commentary.

And what a race it was! They finally figured out how to turn this into an epic sport again.

Loved the Massa-Hamilton battle, and the whole lot of drama towards the end was nothing to sneeze at.

Wonder how Petrov felt when the steering went completely loose after that crazy flight :O

Well one thing that we say from this race is that the Red Bull has the best race pace of any car.

As the fuel came down at the half way mark, both Webber and Vettel saw a huge performance jump over there rivals.

Those Lotus-Renault outfits look so vintage, awesome.

I really love that team, the looks of the car, the sound it makes...

Strange to see them chatting like that after the race. Well, strange in the fact that we're not shown it too often and was a nice insight.

Good drive by Webber considering his poor start and making 4 stops. Renault again shows that it has some pace, good result for them despite Petrov trying to take flight.

Vettel, just too good. Would be good to see how he performs if someone gets ahead of him but the way he is driving he's just going to keep dominating races.

Good race I thought. Looking forward to Shanghai even though that's a rubbish track.

Enjoyed that race a lot more than Melbourne.

Heidfeld's start really mixed things up, Kobayashi was thoroughly entertaining as ever, Hamilton's lack of pace in the last third of the race, Alonso then hitting Hamilton, Petrov doing a Mario Kart style hop, Webber salvaging fourth from his crap start. Great stuff.

That's why I like both Lotus teams... the black and gold as well as the British racing green w/ yellow.

I'm fucking hanging for a Vettel DNF or at least non-podium... but it probably won't happen :(

Great race, better then Melbourne. Vettel streets ahead

Alonso :( he would have been 3rd if he didn't hit Hamilton.....can't afford to be making mistakes like that, poor pitstops and drs not working didn't help though

Well of course there was no major incidents for the drivers to argue about, and the top 3 are all pretty nice guys, so that helps.

Heidfeld must be wondering how he is up on the podium, his racing career was pretty much over until Kubica crashed his rally car. Great to see though! That Renault is proving to be the dark horse of 2011.

Yeah, Vettel is no doubt one of the fastest drivers out there at the moment, probably even the fastest, but his racecraft has not been tested in a while, and when it last was, he came up lacking.

Vettel got past Massa quick enough when it mattered.

CGI bullshit is the death knell of cinema
Well that was an entertaining race.

I thought it was a good recovery for Webber, considering that diabolical start.

Good for Renault for getting another podium.

Vettel on top again, and I did like to see that button managed to get second.

Looking forward to the next race.

Great race; lots of battles and passing!

Webber sure got hit hard with lack of KERS. Shame about Petrov making a mistake.

F1racemanager: Signed up for this race weekend so will start with points down; won 4 bets - 2nd place Button; Petrov not qualify in top 6; Rosberg not in top 5; 1st driver out Maldonado.

So, Vettel saw something black coming into his mirrors eh? He may have wanted to phrase that a bit better, heh.

Also, Vettel is now into smug mode, he knows he is pretty much unstoppable and if this keeps up, it's going to be 2004 all over again. He's already 24 points ahead of Button in 2nd.

Every time I've seen it with Webber in the mix, he's sworn and then looked sheepishly at the camera. They probably don't show it if he's on the podium!

and ham is a complete tire rapist. option wouldn't have got him to the flag

He's gotten a lot smoother in the past years. But that was basicly Hamilton's explanation. They had to keep putting the pitstops earlier since the first one. I don't know if they ran out of softs, I think they just went for soft-soft-hard-hard because otherwise he would've never had a chance to make a three-stop. Not that it matters now.

Great to see Jenson on the podium. Some nice tire-drama at the end and some wing and kers-drama throughout the race. Battle between Alonso and Hamilton was epic until one of them cocked it up.

Also, I like the Pirelli victory caps better than the Bridgestone ones. They look so vintage.

I'd not seen F1 Forum since some time last year, maybe two years ago. It's actually become a lot more entertaining.

I remember the days when Toyota would be awesome in qualifying then not so good in the race. I'm sure a lot of people remember the unfamous Trulli trains. Something like that would very possibly shake up things a good deal, if Vettel wasn't guaranteed pole all the time.

I also wonder how much thought has gone into reversing the grid order. They'd need some method of making it worth your while to qualify in first if you were going to end up starting last, but surely there'd be no better way to force overtaking.

Giving the same points for qualifying is really the only incentive you can give teams to bother qualifying for a reversed grid. But that's just not something that's plausible at the moment with the disparity in speed between the fastest and the slowest teams. A few years ago, it could have worked safety-wise, but it would still fuck up the sport.

Lewis penalised

20 second penalty, so drops a place. Not sure which particular maneuver the FIA are referring to though.

As much as I love Lewis being penalised, I have no idea when that happened either. Seemed to have a pretty uneventful race apart from Alonso driving up his ass.

Edit: So has Alonso - for causing the collision between them.

Understandable, but at the same time I'd just put that down as a normal racing incident.

More points for kobayashi.

It's a shame he lost points from the first race, he's doing a great job this year. His feud with Schumacher today was great fun to watch.

While that collision was Alonso's fault, he did not deserve a penalty. That's just stupid.

Luckily he stays 6th.

and apparently Hamilton was defending to aggressively which partly caused the crash, which is a bit of a joke
