"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

You know who's playing Orange Box right now? Smart X360 owners. You know who's not? Double D dumb as dog shit PC gamers.

Consoles win.

Steam loses.
I've been able to play three parts of the Orange Box (out of five) for weeks. But! You get to play Portal twelve hours early! That's worth something!

Actually, Draft has the Steam version and he's just fucking with you guys. :lol

And that my friends is the most ignorant comment ever posted on GAF.
Typical PC elitist bullshit. I love PC gaming as much as the next guy, and have poured thousands of hours into the hobby over the years but, unlike you, I also have the capacity to enjoy a wide variety of titles across multiple platforms.

Who is the elitist bringing up console games? You are completely ignorant if you think TONS of people wont be playing these games in a year, hell 2, maybe 5 or even 10. Just look at the original HL mods as an example.

say that in a year when the user made content is through the roof on the PC.

While I don't necessarily agree with Draft's militant stance on the issue, I hardly see how user created "remixes" of code are some kind of magical selling point that cripples console versions of a game. A mash up of "Paranoid Android" and "Ballet Dance" by Roni Size might be the best thing ever, but it doesn't make OK Computer less of an album if that's all you ever get a chance to hear.

Heh, OK. It's sometimes very hard to tell the difference between sarcasm and genuine lunacy around here.

WOW.
And when did 6 month - 1 year old games become "ancient"?
It certainly isn't, but not everyone cares about mods. In fact, I've never bothered with any HL2 mods nor any sort of related multiplayer (including CS). I simply don't care. Occasionally a cool mod shows up that's worth trying, but in general, they are so far below professional quality that I'd rather spent my limited gaming time playing something more interesting. I certainly support what they are doing, though. I used to enjoy mods a lot more, but as games become more complex, mods start to feel less impressive.

APPARENTLY he was being sarcastic so really I don't even know what is going on anymore. :lol

@y2kev: Did they upgrade the graphics of the first game to get it on par with ep2?

Haven't tried. They said yes.

Episode 2 is good.

and by good i mean omg

It loads for less than ten seconds periodically. Maybe like once a half hour? I've been playing since around 2 and I think I've seen the loading bar maybe three or four times. Really not as bad as it was on my PC.

Plopped down my 65 bucks on this game today.

Should have it tomorrow.

EB employees talk too much.

Draft was/is a PC supporter, so maybe his comments were sarcastic.

Missed the sarcasm..if you were joking, then Ari says he's sorry.

How's the loading?

Loading is awful. (edit: on HL2. Haven't played the others yet.)

Like Kev, I turned the sensitivity up a good 4-5 notches.

Looks pretty nice for a 3 year old game, though.

I love how when you double click on HL2:E2 or Portals it gives you a countdown to when it comes out.

11 hours, 20 minutes, 02 seconds

I am a multiplatform owner like and probably play my consoles more than my pc. I have no problem with you enjoying other games but the fact that you called the orange box and ancient game at roughly half a year given your time frame was pretty damn retarded.

If HL2 is like the PC version, then yeah, the loading will be excessive.

Since I've posted, the loading bar has come up twice more. So maybe it's getting worse. I don't really notice it though.

Where the hell did YOU get it??

Whoa wtf peeps already have the 360 version? I need comments on the controls, please. Are they as smooth as Halo 3's?

I just bought Orange Box from Steam and have started Episode One, which I haven't played before. I'm wondering if they've tweaked the game any for the console version or if they've optimized the aiming to be as smooth as Halo 3's.

Well, I know where the load points occur on the PC, but I'm wondering how fast they are.

My clever ruse has been exposed. I'd sooner eat a porcupine than play HL2 with a damn gamepad. and no custom maps. And a 30 fps ceiling. And no mods.

A damn gamepad :lol

But it is definitely :lol that X360 owners are playing now, while Steam owner wait, and it is also :lol that retail PC buyers will be saving mad cash money when they buy from CC or Fry's or whatever. Much as I love Steam, it's definitely 0 for 2 as far as HL2 episode releases go.

You're high. People still play Half Life One, and it sure as shit isn't because Valve is tracking stats or selling a custom map or two twice a year.

Let me suggest this to you: TF2, right now, before it is even officially released, has more custom content on the PC than you will ever, ever see on the X360.

Ever.

Actually, it was ice cream that said six months. My point was that I'll probably be playing several other titles a year from now, when the influx of user-created mods for Orange Box arrive. However, if there's a quality mod that catches my eye then I'll certainly be the first to check it out. I've actually had more fun playing through Morrowind this summer, roughly five years after the game arrived, due to incredible user-created content that's been released.

All of which takes a massive flyover the sum total of my post. The core game of Team Fortress 2 or Portal is not gimped because of a lack of access to this content. It wasn't developed by the designers. I'm not saying it's not fun or awesome. Nor am I saying that "tracking stats" or selling a custom map makes up for their inavailability. Where did I even imply that?

haha. well are you sure your pc won't run it? hl2 isn't very demanding...

well, i'm on a dell inspiron 530 with a genuine intel cpu processor (2140 @ 1.6GHz), and 1013 mb of ram.

. . . i copied that from the my computer tab, so to answer your question, no way in hell am i sure it won't run it. haha

My point is that it is gimped. The level editor, the SDK, and the community that uses both to create custom content like maps and mods, is as much a part of HL2, TF2, the whole "Source" package, as Episode 1 or Portal. A Half Life game without mods is half a game (tee-hee.)

The Orange Box, as it appears on consoles, is like the first 5 courses of a seven course meal. And it may be satisfying. And you'll tell yourself, "I didn't want the cake, or the after dinner brandy, anyway." But then you'll look over, and see me eating slice after slice after slice, getting all sippy with that brandy, and you'll think, in your animal brain that rejects rationalization, "damn... I want some of that cake."

My laptop is 1.6 GHZ with 512 MB and it runs TF2 when it's not supposed to, considering I have a 32 MB graphics card.

hmmm... 1.6 ghz isn't much, but the 2140 is a dual-core so i dunno, might still be good enough... you should check your graphics card. the inspiron 530s seem to be highly customisable so you'd have to check. go to your display properties -> settings. check what it says under 'display'. should be: "blah blah monitor on graphics card".
