It really isn't. Rihanna is just Beyonce minus the class, talent and solid hits. Rihanna can have as many #1's as she likes, but the only songs people are going to remember her for are Umbrella and We Found Love.
In 20 years, we'll all have forgotten Rihanna, and she'll be working as a fluffer for some greasy porn director in California, remembering when she was rich and famous.
For real though, all through Rated R exciting traces of her island music roots meant she was a real thing of her own in the pop scene, and although she's BRIEFLY tapped into that later (Man Down) it's been drowned out by the loud bosh tunes and that plinkety Calvin Harris song. 'Music of the Sun' and 'Rated R' represent two exciting, very different takes on that sound that still represented Rihanna's own personality. That's gone for now.

No way. Rihanna can have as many generic hits as she wants but she'll never be on Beyonce's level. She can keep competing with Katy Perry on the lower tier front though.

I put them in the same field because they've both conquered radio with pop hits even though they themselves have marginal performance talent. The difference between the two of them however are two-fold:
1) Rihanna has little restraint and has been willing to work with virtually anybody, while Katy Perry doesn't seem to care about collaborations
2) Katy Perry actually WRITES her own songs, which I will unconditionally value more than someone who doesn't
You know, I've always hated this mindset. Some of the best vocalists/entertainers of all time were not songwriters, and only recently has that been seen as a bad thing. Where would ICONIC vocalists like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, Sarah Vaughan, Judy Garland, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Whitney Houston, Mariah Ca--oh, nevermind, be if their talent were measured by whether or not they wrote their material?
Likewise, where would Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Diane Warren and Linda Perry be? ICONIC songwriters every bit as famous as the talent they worked with?
Granted, I'm in NO WAY trying to place Katy Perry in the same God Tier as many of the names I just listed, but once upon a time being an entertainer was about honing your specific talent, and working with people who were just as talented in other areas in order to create overall artistry. It wasn't about every artist being some catch-all jack of all trades. Because one truth remains: if a song sucks, most people won't give a single fuck whether or not the artist wrote it.
Besides, I wouldn't give Katy sole credit when Max Martin is also credited as co-writer on pretty much all of her hits.

Sorry but this is the dumbest thing about stans this generation. Alot of LEGENDS dont write their own songs that doesnt make them less of an legend/artist sorry. Funny thing its only little cutters who started this because their fave talked about writing her own songs LOL. Just take a seat. Not here for this. Beyonce STEALS WRITING CREDITS ALMOST EVERY ALBUM SHE'S WORKED ON doesnt make her less of a SLAYER on stage or in the studio. Just leave that argument alone tbh

The thing about Beyonce that annoys me is that none of her ideas on the creative side of things seem to be her own. If they were, she would never had agreed to wear her mothers FRIGHTFUL designs while a member of Destiny's Child.
Just seems to me that she has a handful of gays that tell her what to do and how to look fabulous. Other people in her industry aren't that transparent.
