The Game Awards 2016 Thread: Kojima Time Featuring The Kojimas

I put 300 hours into Titanfall OG, but I still understood it's criticisms because it was fair and well-thought-out there just wasn't enough game there.

It's something like OverWatch can win then I don't want to ever hear an excuse again that there's not enough content in the game

It also has a micro transaction system that's straight out of a gatcha mobile game. It's fucking gross.

GAF on awards night:

Geoff did a good job this year and the winners were all absolutely deserving. Solid show! Gets better every year!

This plus passive-aggressive comments about what is "real" music with a hint of diet racism, and sociopathic posts about mocking a father and his dead son and a man struggling with his weight despite working his absolute hardest to lose it.

Gaming-side was on a roll tonight
of stupidity

I love both of the games. But in fairness, I think Overwatch as a colorful and vivacious game does a lot more to differentiate itself from other shooters than Uncharted 4 does to differentiate itself from other cinematic adventure games.

I think this is a fair point to make. One I can agree with, at least when it comes to the first part. Haven't played UC4 yet, so I can't comment much on it.

Damn the show got a lot better though, even though still not a fan of it.

Shit has me in tears though

Damn, I almost forgot about this.

so, yeah, that was, um.... YouTube and Shill.

Highs: Death Stranding
Rocket League Arc
Mass Effect
Cancer game speech
Winners announced.

Lows: Bosman selling out harder than his Last Levelle character.
Zelda looks like shit.
Assassins Creed Movie looks like a Uwe Boll film.
Walking Dead on Arrival.

pretty accurate top to bottom.

Zelda did indeed look like shit. Solid art direction held back by whatever the fuck is going with that engine or hardware on top of some questionable design decisions.

no one's discounting what overwatch accomplishes, but it doesn't have an overarching point outside of a realized world and engaging gameplay mechanics. other games do that and more.

How many cinematic action adventure games did we have this year?

Aside from Mass Effect, Prey had me most intrigued. It just looks like it'll fit what I really like in video games. Day one buy for me, and hoping for a CE version.

So out of curiosity, what's Uncharted 4's point?

From an outsider's perspective, one who hasn't played it and has zero interest in it, it seemed like it was just ending out the story of Nathan Drake.

Memory serves, one of the things teh Blizzard guy said was how diverse the game is, and honestly, that's a pretty good message (or point, one would say), isn't it? Both genders well represented, ages, races.

Interesting how people cry foul when Fallout ostensibly loses all its RPG trappings, but when the same happens to Mass Effect it's nothing but rapturous applause. Looks like an enjoyable-enough TPS, at least; might pick it up someday.

Congrats to Overwatch! I suck at it but I still love it to pieces. (And even though they're not a part of the game itself: those animated shorts are incredible).

I wish they'd have these awards in February or March, though. Early December makes no sense; the year still has plenty of heavy-hitters that either just came out (FFXV) or have yet to (Last Guardian). Games like that are just awkwardly relegated to the lineup for the following year's awards and then promptly forgotten (Xenoblade X). This needs to be a show for the best games of the year, not of "the last 10-ish months, and maybe the past two months of 2015 except not really".

Go Go Neo Rangers!

This too!

It has so many things people just rail for days that other games have, yet because it's blizzard I feel like it gets a pass.

Art was good but the gameplay looked terrible as well as the performance. (in fairness I'm probably not qualified to comment as the last one on I finished was Link's awakening (which was fucking boss)).

I getting a tad worried that Zelda is not shaping up like Nintendo wanted. I mean, they are going all in on the Switch and they show Wiiu gameplay at 10fps? It looked and ran horribly. There isn't a Switch version ready for demo?

What is going on over there?

Must say I'm salty sfv won. It's a good game but two of the other nominees on that list brought out better games that worked day one without the massive amounts of Dlc

We started out with Keighley having a spiritual experience over his love for Kojima.

And then Kojima showed us a literal test tube baby and skeleton soldiers.

We then had Bosman talking to a man in a robot Schick razor outfit.

Then we had the audience bawling their eyes out from a man's emotional tribute to his son.

And then rap, and then metal, and then rap(?).

This show is bonkers, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm not entirely sure what this is referring to, but I've played over 100 hours and haven't spent a dime on anything other than the game itself and it's my goty.

For you.
This too!

Uncharted 4 has a much worse microtransaction system yet nobody seems to complain about that. Not to mention Overwatch's micros are some of the most innofensive you could find, being cosmetics only and fully earnable with regular gameplay.

Patience. They're not going to release a Zelda on brand new hardware that runs like shit.

The Wii U version? Who knows.

i love how people think I'm harking for uncharted.

It seems to be the thing most people are ruffled about, so it was a guess on my part.

Regardless, what exactly is the point of the other games?

And again, isn't Overwatch's sheer diversity actually a good point? Don't people often lament how so many games are headed by a white guy with a short haircut? And then Overwatch comes out with its cast.

I honestly think its diversity is partly its point.

Comparing cosmetic lootboxes to gacha games is so disingenuous you might as well just type "I am making an argument in bad faith." If the game didn't let you play until you unlocked stuff, or unlocked heroes, or maps, or modes that way, maybe. Not being able to give your waifu a low cut Halloween costume is not the same thing.

You can dislike their MTs without going for asinine comparisons.

saying overwatch won because it's a popular competitive multiplayer shooter is an oversimplification.

It won because it's incredibly deep yet simple. It's a new IP and it was a perfectly polished game on release with rock solid performance.

Everything about has been quality since it released.

Overwatch is a colorful, diverse, inclusive, and fairly welcoming game in a genre that has long been coded as the exclusive preserve of sociopathic men. That, in and of itself, is worth celebrating and very much qualifies it as having a point and an important one at that. .

Right, and that release date is drifting into the ether it seems. I just can't believe they didn't show any footage on the Switch. I mean, don't most devs make a playable demo even if the game isn't baked to show off what it will look like? I've been waiting for this game for years and I'm not seeing positive reinforcement here.
