The Game Awards 2016 Thread: Kojima Time Featuring The Kojimas

Didn't catch the show because of the time it was on.

Any summary of what was announced/revealed/trailers, etc?

(I don't care about the awards)

Congrats to Geoff.

Show keeps getting better every year.

This year for the first time I would call it great.

Well done everybody.

I'm starting to watch it right now. Heard it's a trainwreck

As much as everybody wants it to be (for some reason) it is not.

I was not a fan of the musical choices, those have been better in the past in my opinion, but on the production level this has been a huge improvement.

Thanks YouTube.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Actually really enjoyed that. Given that they have to have sponsored things like the Razorbot, which actually amused me, it was probably the best VGAs yet, IMO.

The way you generalized this in your original post placed Overwatch with the worst of the microtransactions in mobile games. Loot crates and micro-transaction systems that don't affect gameplay systems, e.g. buying items that allow you to reduce timers to either proceed or play or buying items that allows you to win against other players online, aren't something I consider a "gotcha mobile game." In fact, they're rather benign.

There are plenty of PvE gatcha games too. If you think loot crates are benign I... Let me try this another way.

Pretend for a moment that Disney created some game using their stable of beloved characters and released cosmetic items for said cast. But instead of letting you buy the items you want you play or pay to get loot crate drops. This includes limited seasonal drops. Would you really need a story about a kid dropping 50 bucks trying to get a limited "Space Man Stitch" skin to realize it's design is predatory?

I think most people would correctly say that the game is using it's player engagement and attachment to it's characters to further monetize the product, and then add the method is unsavory.

For whatever reason Overwatch gets recognition of the first part, but not the second.

My favorite part of that show was the Doom mashup with the Periphery drummer and Matt and the Kojima/Death Stranding trailer.

Did Guardians of the Galaxy not get announced?

And what was Gearbox's announcement and the Game Informer cover?

It did. There was a brief 30 second or so trailer shown and then an official press release went out after. It's set to debut sometime in 2017.

Gearbox announced that they are starting to publish games as well, and the first one will be Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition from PeopleCanFly. You can play through it as Duke Nukem if you so desire.

Game Informer's January cover is Prey.

Thanks for this. This is what I needed!

Wait was Phoenix Lab's new game revealed then? Can't find anything about it even on their twitter...
Yes. It seems to be a Monster Hunter like game. There's a 2 page thread on here somewhere.

People actually watch this crap ?

Did you watch it? How can you call it crap if you didn't even see it? A bunch of new trailers dropped it was actually a decent show besides the music performances and that Gillette robot thing but hey at least they helped sponsor it.

I've seen a few minutes here and there from years past and that was pretty much all I needed to see, it was so awful.

Cross Posting from another thread

I was surprised how much more I enjoyed the broadcast than I thought I would.

Not having to cater to the Spike audience has improved the show.

There are still some things that need to be ironed out:

1. No shilling during the show! Pitchford was disgusting. DISGUSTING.

2. I may be sensitive to this because my girl makes me watch 100 award shows a year just for fashion stuf and I'm an old man set in my ways, but man, some of these people look like shit. I'm down with the jacket and tee or jacket and button down with no tie that many in the gaming community roll with, its kind of a nice blend of "im trying to look nice" and "I'm reppin for my hobby and we don't need to wear tuxes because we are gamers" BUT... stuff like Drukkman is fucking embarrassing. You don't wear a fucking hoodie to an awards show dude when you are up for a major award.

Geoff's whole thing with TGA is a push to have the industry taken more seriously, and having big time award winners looking like that does not help at all.

3. You will always be inferior if you think you are inferior. Whatever Geoff said at the top of the show, I forget the exact quote "Video Games, the most important (or best, or something) type of entertainment" was mega embarrassing.

4. Def needs a little more spotlight on the GOTY noms. Like the oscars, throughout the show, spotlight each one for a few mins and what makes it so great.

5. I love Boseman but his bits were mostly brutal.

6. Back to shilling... Having Kyle do a PSN commercial from backstage is pretty gross and he didn't seem comfortable at all.

7. Its so hard, because a lot of these people aren't entertainers so they aren't comfortable on stage... but the Sebastian guy segment was brutal as fuck. And does their studio even have a fucking name? And it was a "original goal" to reveal at the game awards??? Then fucking reveal! Your cinematic trailer could have come out a year ago, its just a movie. It wasn't even gameplay.

8. Two strange things that seem somewhat related. There seemed to be a big push to only focus on the future, not the past.

a. Kojima award. The guy is winning an icon award. You would have thought he was just winning an award for putting up with how Konami treated him last year, based on Geoff's intro. How you give a lifetime achievement award and not talk about or even mention Snatcher, ZOE, MG and MGS is beyond me.

b. The Doom guys. They seemed like good guys and genuinely appreciative of winning an award.... but how the fuck do you win a major award for a game called Doom and not thank Carmack and Romero is fucking beyond me.

Highlights:

1. Some of the speeches were great. Nolan North, Boogie, and the That Dragon Cancer guy were all very heartfelt and emotional.

I really enjoyed the second Overwatch (goty) speech talking about inclusiveness.

2. I enjoyed the opening a lot. A little pretentious, but pretty cool.

3. I really liked that the Naughty Dog guy gave a tip of the cap to Amy Henning.

4. New trailers and stuff are always hype-y and awesome.

Most importantly. My girl barely paid attention but there was one thing that blew her mind:

"THAT MAN IS NOT FUCKING 53!!!"

"I DON'T BELIEVE YOU I WILL NEVER BELIEVE YOU"

"I'M MOVING TO JAPAN AND USING THEIR CREAMS EVERY DAY"

"HE'S NOT 53 I'LL BET MY LIFE ON IT"

EDIT - totally forgot to mention Peter Moore. He was awesome. Classy. The anti-Pitchford.

Obviously it doesn't matter at the moment with YouTube being muted, but does anyone know why the show is only available in HD and not 4K in the app on my Samsung TV? I can select 1440 on youtube.com in the TV's browser and 4k on my desktop. Other 4k content works just fine.

the overwatch director said "i have to thank the amazing community for this award"

and i thought "you probably haven't had the same experience i've had"

but then he said "dicks out for harambe!"

and i guess he is the the shit community i've been playing with for the past six months

The speech the other guy made when they won goty was great tho

Other people were cross-posting, so why not:
Before we even get to the awards and trailers, we should first talk about how the (non game trailer, of course; that's why people tune into this award show and not the often-cited British Academy Games Awards or the Interactive Achievement Awards, which are exactly what some of you are asking for) advertising was interspersed with the actual content of the show.

Many of the complaints seen in this thread (and throughout social media) would be resolved through simply allowing sponsored content to be in advertisement periods. Game trailers presented by Microsoft, Sony, EA, etc. were already in that time for this show; at this point, even stacking the advertisements on to those show breaks would help. Again, this is without changing any of the content.
Keep the sponsors, as that's how you can afford the venue and spectacle.
Keep the trailers, as that's why people watch TGAs every year and don't even know about BAFTA's or AIAS's award shows.
Keep the musical interludes, as that's how you entice the more mainstream crowd to tune into an otherwise niche event that would otherwise only be watched by enthusiasts like the ones on this forum.
But please, please, please put advertisements in a more clear space for them to thrive and for spacing of the main content. That way people can know "Yes, this is when I can go to the bathroom!" instead of doing so during the show's Shick razor man and potentially miss out on a world premiere or an award that they wanted to see.

Also, ditch the pre-show. You could have kicked off the show with that Breath of the Wild trailer and I guarantee that viewer retention would have increased simply because of the strong start. I agree that Kojima needed to be the first award recipient presented, and I'm thankful that he was.

Edit: Kyle Bosman is great, but his humor isn't for everyone. Having his skit as the first impression for many is actually polarizing. Incorporating these two events into the show (as well as the Pokémon GO award recipients) could have been possible with the previous suggestions, given that the ad breaks would be a fixed time slot instead of variable live advertising methods (variables include how actors/developers respond to hosts, chuckling, stuttering, etc.).

I was pretty disappointed. Still don't know how some of these things go by without anyone in the production team realizing how poorly they'll be received.

The hydrobot was cringy. I get it, you gotta get $$$ to get the show going but anyone who had any creative control over that sponsorship could have easily done something less awkward.

Again this broadcast reminded me why I close Twitch channel 90% of the time I'm on there. The people hating on Run The Jewels/DJ Shadow's performance was embarrassing. they're amazing artists and huge gamers performing at an event they're excited about, show some fucking respect.

I mean for the people complaining about Run the Jewels, do these people not know they had a song on the Battlefield Hardline sound track? That you could drive around listening to?

Me and a friend turned that song in Everytime we got in a car. Now, whenever we get in the car IRL, we turn it on, haha.
