The games industry ‘will only have room for one non-Nintendo console next gen’, it’s claimed

This smells likely as some ai generated bullshit probably. Probably some college project for web design.

What are you trying to do? Are you really accusing them of being a fake firm?

I’m asking how much validity and research is actually put into it though so yes

The games industry will only be able to support two successful game consoles in the next generation of hardware, a new report claims, and one of those will ‘clearly’ be Nintendo.

Market research firm DFC Intelligence released its annual market report and forecast this week, in which it projects major revenue growth for the second half of the decade, while predicting significant risk for one of the three established console manufacturers.

DFC predicts that, thanks to new hardware from Nintendo and major releases such as GTA6, the games industry will enjoy record growth in 2025, following a period of decline following the Covid 19 pandemic.

The firm predicts that the number of people worldwide who play video games will exceed 4 billion by 2027 – nearly half the global population. It projects that Nintendo will be “the clear winner” in the next generation of consoles, due largely to a combination of earlier availability and limited competition.

However, DFC projects that only one of Sony and Microsoft will be able to successfully compete with Nintendo when their new consoles launch by 2028.

“There isn’t room for more than two major console systems,” it says. “Sony or Microsoft will struggle mightily in a distant third place – largely depending on which of those companies can gain early momentum.”

DFC believes it’s too early to know which of Xbox and PlayStation will drop off next gen, stating that price points, launch dates, and other basic features such as portability, will factor.

“A new Sony system (PlayStation 6?) should have an advantage because of loyal base and strong Sony IP,” it says, while noting that Microsoft will go into its next console as the largest gaming publisher.

“Microsoft failed with Xbox Series X/S but has made major acquisitions to become world’s largest software publisher. Microsoft has the option of focusing on software and distribution models over hardware.”

DFC Intelligence founder and CEO David Cole said in a statement: “Over the past three decades, the video game industry has grown more than 20x, and after two years of slumping hardware and software sales, it’s poised to resume growing at a healthy rate through the end of the decade.

“While 2025 will mark the beginning of that upward trajectory, some huge questions remain, including who will lose the next-gen console war and who will win the game software distribution battle. And with the large publishers focused on live services around evergreen franchises, opportunities for smaller studios will be plentiful.”

Nintendo has yet to officially reveal its Switch successor, but the company has confirmed plans to do so during its current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.

Well you're always free to drop them a message to ask about their methodology.

It makes more sense to do that than attempt to claim they aren't a legitimate market research firm on the basis that you're not fond of their website (FYI, most firms in this industry tend to have very basic websites).

Very weird article. The switch 2 has already won without it being out yet, but they're unsure about PS5 Vs Xbox even though the outcome is already quite clear and with data.
Yeah, the validity of their claim that the market can only support one none Nintendo console is destroyed by the fact that they can't somehow figure out which console that would be if it was true.

Did they learn why they were failing to being with? That actively and constantly shooting themselves in the foot while allowing spoiled devs to call too many shots while stretching themselves way too thin is not a good idea? That they need to let go of "arcade at home" mentality? If so then they can make a come back, their software has been making them enough money to do it.

Not interested in wasting any more time on it. Everyone here is free to make their own decision about the validity of the information that’s already been provided.

The latest in a long line of fucking dumb asses who wanna be the 1st to say i called it.

Xbox ain't going anywhere bruv. The success of indy and others is proving it

Has Nintendo ever had two successive generations of success when it comes to hardware install base? Seems like they're always hot and cold with hardware sales since the NES, but pretty solid with software.

If history repeats itself the Switch 2 may falter behind if it's just a Suped-up Switch with not much else going for it.

With Sony, it's clear they're returning to the handhold market according to the Bloomberg report from last month, and after the success of the Portal, they'd be stupid not to capitalise on it with a hybrid console/handheld + multi-SKU model for PS6.

Next generation will be a battle of philosophy, where the winner will be decided by how the market shifts. Will they go full digital with Microsoft's 'everything is an Xbox' strategy, or will they stick to what they know with mobile gaming & dedicated consoles?
I can't see a scenario where they fail unless they get mega greedy. Even when WiiU was a flop, 3DS still sold like 70 million units which was down from the original DS but still absolutely smoked the Vita. If Switch 2 is $400 with BC then you can just pencil in 100 million units guaranteed.

these clowns. Nintendo already left the market with the switch.

this is something i have been saying: the market can't sustain this many consoles.

it seems there is only one place for a home console, one place for a handheld and one place for a PC store front.

i would say that in any case, Nintendo is the one that could see decrease in market share. (Xbox is already out of the picture) IF the switch is too underpowered and IF Playstation makes a competitive handheld (price point and performance) Sony could take market share from Nintendo.

im taking about mainstream numbers, not niche ones like the steam deck.

Yeah we don’t need PlayStation or Xbox. PC and Nintendo is the way to go. Nintendo actually have exclusives.

I’m selling my PS5 as soon as I play GTA VI. It’s the only reason I bought it. Until it comes out it’s a YouTube/Netflix machine.
Honestly that's where I'm at too. I bought all three consoles this Gen (I like wasting money) and just invested in a legit gaming PC. Between basically all Xbox games being on PC and ps5 cross Gen titles likely being around for years after the ps6 launch I see no reason to buy a non Nintendo next Gen console, at least for a long time.

wait, what's the logic here? 3DS which was cheaper than Switch is somehow going to be outsold by Switch 2 which hasn't even met DS numbers?

DFC have been utter shit with their console sales analysis ever since they predicted the Xbox One X would sell upwards of 20M by 2022. It probably didn't even sell 5M.

I do agree with the general jist of there being high risk for the next gen though for both MS and Sony. Not that there is any doubt which of the two are poised to do better.

Those instances you're referring to where Nintendo failed to have a successful successor console are examples where Nintendo outright botched things. With N64 they completely missed the boat on CDs, then with Wii U they had a massive brand issue and were a few years early with the tablet idea. They've demonstrated in the handheld market with the DS to 3DS that when they make more sensible, linear progressions on a successful system, they will continue to find success.

That's what they seem to be doing with the switch 2 and I just don't see how it won't be successful when it gets marketed with exclusive Mario kart 9, Mario Odyssey 2, and the next Pokemon games. I feel like it probably won't be quite as successful as the OG switch but it'll do well.

market research is pretty much all guesswork otherwise concord and xbox would be a success.

Also, Switch 2 is not a next gen console, it won't impact PS6 or Next Xbox because it won't run games that PS5 or Series X can't beyond Nintendo Exclusives or Waggle the controller shit, Switch is playing checkers and Playstation are playing Chess, Xbox is trying to play chess but doesn't know how.

Switch 2 (leaked) is very similar to Switch 1 so the chances of it being successful are lower, the factor ''this is new'' is gone.

And yes I always use the Pal console because the console is more uniform, that NTSC red shit with all the shades of blue everywhere just never made sense to me.
Glad I was in the PAL region when this thing came out, if I was stuck with the NTSC garbage ida probably sold my Dreamcast.
Yes I still have it and its still white, cuz i know how to take care of shit.

You don't have to be an analyst, Xbox as a console manufacturer is dying quickly, only Playstation and Nintendo will remain.
As in sport and politics, there is no empty space that cannot be filled. Valve has already signaled the return of steam machines
If the Xbox comes out today, tomorrow is simply another day.

Why is it lower? All PlayStation consoles are just stronger than their predecessor without any "this is new" factor and they still sell very good.
I think for cultural reasons. The comparison with Playstation could be true if the technological leap is large.
How to make a technological leap when the company is powered by cel shading my friend.
