The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

If the Giantbomb crew don't like a game, why do people see it as a personal attack? It's just a bunch of guys they are not spokepeople for all who are into video games.

Jeff doesn't like beat 'em ups, shrug it off as it doesn't matter what he likes, its about what you like. You like Double Dragon then good for you.

Man, I really don't see what's wrong with Double Dragon either! Then again Jeff was instantly dismissive about the Scott Pilgrim game and that was fantastic, so I dunno what he wants out of beat em ups. I think this week is a reminder that as much as I like the guys, I don't necessarily agree with them a lot of the time.

Double Dragon Neon is a fantastic beat 'em up, maybe THE best beat'em up ever made. Jeff is being crazy petty for illogical reasons. Ryan's clearly having fun though and laughing at all the silliness. Jeff's just being weird and uptight.

so brad shoemaker claims "it's garbage, don't buy it" before he's actually learned the systems of the game.

The game didn't bother to teach them.

what does this say about how he views his responsibility as a critic relaying a titles' quality? he just influenced thousands through this forum from a position of ignorance. great.

Well, that's why he is writing a full review and not just posting that in GB website. And is not like this game will suffer a lot in sales cause a game critic made a negative comment in gaf or Resident Evil is so groundbreaking and Capcom so a niche company that needs and deserve all the sales.

Probably because the people on GB's site that follow them will base their purchase on what GiantBomb says and only that.

Seriously, read the comments on some QL's or reviews sometime. You'll see 'damn, I was really looking forward to it...' like, a if all the hype they had before was completely abolished because demigod Jeff deemed it shit. It's idiotic that people are swayed so easy by a group of people, but GiantBomb does have a large following of 'core gamers', and they do influence their opinion. They wouldn't have jobs if they didn't.

I don't know how anyone could watch that RE6 quicklook and go "AHA! See! Everyone is just being unfair to the game, it's fine!"

He is playing very poorly and is frustrated about that. Though there are some moments which show the lack of polish on the game.

The game didn't bother to teach them.

I'm pretty sure that there are many games viewed as being great that don't actually have tutorials or gameplay mechanics that are fully explained. I really don't remember RE5 or RE4 having any sort of tutorial, yet brad loves those games.

Also, as many other people have stated, hand holding tutorials are becoming the norm and without them some people get really upset and frustrated. No one wants to actually experiment anymore with game systems and figure things out for themselves.

At least the game mechanics aren''t crazy enough to require you to read FAQs and walkthroughs. (demon/dark souls)

Of course, but many of them have this mechanics naturally integrated in the game.

Probably because they felt more natural than in 6, specially because you only need to do a simple control input.

I don't like hand holding tutorials but I don't like to feel that the game is cheap because didn't explain shit, not cause the learning of this mechanics are integrated in the gameplay or scenario, only because the developer could not be bothered to explain/demonstrate/integrate in a natural way.

I really doubt RE6 is (or wants) to be the Dark Souls of action games.

Why did Giantbomb completely break their player again? Basically all the options you choose before the video starts don't mean dick, and you can't scan ahead if you've already seen the beginning bits. Guess they really want you to use youtube.

true. I just use youtube if I can. And just dl the premium stuff.

They did mention they will revamp the player during the site rehaul, but who knows when that will be.

People trying to justify their purchase. Happens any time an eagerly anticipated game gets lower than spectacular reviews.
It truly looked like fun.

It's not. But it is quite funny and the soundtrack is amazing. You'll probably get more out of it by watching a lets play of it rather than playing it yourself because most of the gameplay aspects are pretty bad.

Lol at Jeff poking fun at how Brad is playing the game after 12-15 hours. Especially funny when Brad accidently hits the home button when moving the analog stick.

RE6 looked assy, but kinda fun. Double Dragon just looked kinda boring though. I usually like the presentation in Way Forward games, but this one isn't an aesthetic I care much for. Hugging blobs > chest bumpin bros

Bloodrayne was fun but way too super damn hard. And I've completed Bayonetta on infinite climax. The way you get locked into animations in Bloodrayne just kills your will to keep playing.

I don't get why Jeff hates DD either. He seems actively annoyed they didn't keep Double Dragon "pure" when he himself says that genre is dead. Why not spice it up with crazy 80's fun?

I just noticed that during the cutscene with the Nemesis-like, Jake was firing bullets he purportedly never had because Brad wasted them all on flying BOWs. Good Job Capcom.

It sounds like Jeff wants a gritty, realistic version of Double Dragon that adheres to the serious nature of the series....... bwaaahahahaha. I can't even type that without laughing.

I really like how goddamn dumb DDN looks.

It's not dumb, it's dumb. As a child of the 80's, I fucking love all the references.

I've heard multiple people with taste I trust saying they had a lot of fun with DDN, so it's good to see it's just Jeff being Jeff.

Yeah, it's just Jeff being Jeff. It's a ton of fun if you give it a chance. I even played through the game solo...twice.. and grinded out tapes to get ready for a hard mode playthrough. After watching their two player playthough, it looks like it takes a lot more patience and (gasp) skill to play solo. You actually have to learn how to dodge and recognize enemy patterns.

Also, the ending credits song is absolutely worth finishing the game. Especially because by the end of the game you really start to like Skullmageddon's campy voice.

They should have spiced up the gameplay a bit too. It's like Comic Jumper, everything is neat besides the actual gameplay.

See this is what I hate about this pile on mentality when it comes to games that are universally panned.

What you just described is something that occurs in countless games, a lot of which are good. There's plenty of actual bad stuff to point out or complain about with RE6, don't grasp at random bullshit that happens everywhere else.

You're totally right, but so am I.

That is actually a very good comparison. Double Dragon certainly has funny moments, but I'd be pissed if I had paid for that game.

I agree. For example read the comments on the Sound Shapes quick look and then the comments on the 5/5 review Alex gave the game.

I'm not gonna say RE6 is a good game. From the demo, it seems like it's a bad game. But it does looks like it can be a LOT of fun. It just depends on how you play it. Like, not like how Brad was playing it.

I watched Game Informer's Test Chamber video of RE6, and it looked like a lot of fun. It's because of the way Tim Turi (the guy who reviewed it for GI) played it (though the sliding down hills looked hilariously stupid). Compare the way Tim plays as Jake to the way Brad did. Night and day difference.

It seems to me that the biggest problem that RE6 has going for it is that it's a 60 dollar game. Maybe when it gets down to 20, it'll be worth checking out.

The melee animations look so slow to me in DD. It's like they're punching under water or something. Other than that, the games looks cool though, just not for me. I played the crap out of them back in the day but I've come to terms that I just don't like beat em ups anymore (besides Castle Crashers).

RE6 looked good though. Wish my download would finish off PSN.

Holy shit, RE6 looks absolutely terrible. I though the reviews were all hyperbole but it really does look like complete shit. All those resources poured into content without substance, damn.

Brad's complaint about unresponsive enemies when shooting them is valid for RE5 as well. Granted the enemies in RE5 didn't lunge at you like they do in RE6, it's still not an entirely new complaint.

Still returning my copy of the game though.

Yeah Double Dragon looks awesome, and I had alot of fun playin the demo. Wayforward are makin some good shit. Jeff was complaining like a delusional fanboy, think he just didnt like that they were sort of making fun of double dragon, which he seems to have alot of nostalgia for. Ryan seemed like he liked it but was swayed by Jeff a little to hold back on that.

Watched some of the second half of the QL. I had to skip the opening because I haven't played that yet.

Two things:
1)I'm fairly certain I've shot a zombie when they jump at you. So yeah, it's not exactly canned. However, I have had a tougher time aiming in this game compared to other TPS. I set the speed up and there are some skill unlocks for steadier aiming so maybe that will help.

2)"Would that have been a case where if you had dropped to your back you could have dodged?"
"I dunno, maybe?"
Yeah, you can actually. The game doesn't tell you at all which blows but if you mess around with it at the beginning you can quickly figure it out. No wonder Brad must have been having a tough time if he wasn't rolling and shit.

Anyways, I have some issues with the game myself and I'm not that far in but I am having fun with it. When your dodging and setting off remote bombs and then slide tackling a group off zombies before owning them with a shotgun, it feels pretty good.

I think you're being weird thinking a beat em up of any variety is worth playing in 2012.

dealwithit

You like it? Enjoy playing it and move on with your life.

^But the point is that its a throwback. And obviously a good game of any genre is worth playing in 2012. Is it possible youre a Jeff fanboy?
