The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I just always feel overwhelmed when I see things like that, and it's an instant "nope" that goes off in my head.

Their brief discussion on the finer details of cultist names/definitions was great, haha.

I don't know why though. There is map, your abilities, XP bar, a radar, quest log, your status and the chat window. Really not much and all of it very practical.

If the game looked like something I could really get into, I might could justify fees. Mainly because I would likely only stick with it for a few months anyways, so it would end up being around the same price as a standard title at that point.

Unless they offered some kind of $300 lifetime membership program!

The whole idea of having to pay to play a game I've already paid retail price for has always rubbed me the wrong way. I'm aware of server costs and everything, but I guess it's just something I haven't shed from growing up in the 90's when these mmo things were new and subscriptions were baffling.

I used to avoid MMOs because they always seemed like a genre that I could get way too into. There were Too many stories about people becoming hopeless addicted and I knew I was susceptible to that kind of addiction, so I just didn't touch them.

Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me and I tried Lord of the Rings Online when it became free to play. At first, it really sucked me in and I was really enjoying it. I even spent some money to open some more of the world up to me. After a few weeks I burned out, mainly because the guy I typically played with changed shifts and playing by myself just wasn't the same.

When The Old Republic came out I thought that the added voice acting and focus on narrative would keep me interested longer. In the beginning it was cool but again, once the shiny new coating wore off, I burned out again.

I'm actually surprised that it's a genre I can't get into. Character building and looting aspects of games grab me more than just about anything else.

Oddly enough, the one aspect that I did get a little addicted to was selling things I crafted or crafting materials on the auction house.

Gawd that Tera QuickLook made it seem like MMO 101. It looked damn pretty in places but that was some generic MMO stuff right there.

You should come visit us at Guild Wars 2 =D The market layout makes it easier for you to play with prices, supply and demand. Plus it is a one time fee.
...

Disappointed in no Jeff for the Tera QL, but Vinny makes it all OK.

I may give Guild Wars 2 a try sometime simply because of the one time fee.

I find having a group of people/clan that you enjoy being a part of and playing with is essential for long term MMORPG enjoyment the way most of them are currently designed. Everything is more fun when you're playing with friends. People who solo everything generally burn out quickly.

I'm sure you're right but I just don't have a group of friends that are interested in MMOs. I have a cousin that plays but at a completely different pace. I think the real trick is finding a group to play with that have a similar dedication level. I think Jeff mentioned it in Jar time video once. I wouldn't be playing for hours and hours each day and I would always be taking breaks to mix in different games. If I'd joined a group, I likely would fall behind quickly. Still I have this strange desire to give them a try every so often.

I can't watch this the whole way through even with Brad and Vinny's funny commentary. That's how much I'm sick of MMOs.

Yeah I almost feel embarrassed for games like Rift and Tera. The amount of time money and effort chasing after something that people aren't really interested in anymore is kind of sad.

I have no idea what you just said. People are enjoying MMO's - Tera looks absolutely terrible to me, but there are MMO's out there I enjoy and look forward to.

The character creation stuff at the end was great. If brad thinks the Elin are pushing it, then he's a virgin to the horrors of the common anonymous internet user.

The combat looks pretty cool. Not too interested in the game in general, but the action focus definitely seems like a plus.

Yeah, sucks that the combat is being wasted in Tera because of it's very bland/tired out quest system that has been done to death in MMO's.

TERA looks cool for what it is. Can't blame them for not innovating that much since it is a Korean MMO after all. They just want to sit in their PC bangs and grind away.

Look at it this way: You build up to that moment was took. No one using those started off with that. That's like thinking fighter pilots just hopped in their planes one day and was all buzzing the tower 10 minutes later.

Tangentally, I am still annoyed at how few MMOs allow us players to monkey, install, and craft UIs for their games. The geniuses behind those are often years ahead of the dev teams in terms of raw power, customizabilty, usability, and player agency.

Uh...ya might wanna check rift and tera's numbers right now (some of the solidest contenders to come out in recent memory).

You know how there are some plants and animals that have markings, colors, and patterns that let other animals know to stay away? That's basically what those HUDs do for me.

Even if I ended up thinking I would like the game, I know I wouldn't in the end. I've played enough MMOs to know that now.

Oh, great. Tera has a half-animal/half-little-girl race in it. :/

But they're not actually little girls, they just LOOK like little girls. It even talks about how they procreate in the Wiki.

...yeah, any interest I had in this game died right about there.
