The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

This is where I complain that I haven't even heard them talk about dota 2 once. Brad would fall down that rabbit hole HARD.

The only one at fault here is you. Brad has talked about Dota 2 plenty, in that he wants to play it. I'm guessing he's waiting on the tutorial stuff, like myself.

They basically said that, in its current Beta state, Dota 2 is too intimidating and they're looking forward to the features that are meant to ease new players into the game. I'm in the same boat. The community's reputation and the trial by fire learning process is not something I'm interested in dealing with.

Brad plays this like a man who's spent time with a MOBA before. Dota 2 would have been a pain to play and comment at the same time though.

He also agrees with me about the movement speed being too slow in Middle Earth.

Don't worry, when it's out of beta and some of those community features are built in, there will be more excuses made. Don't expect to ever hear much about Dota 2 from anyone currently working at GB.

Wow, I had no idea. Admittedly I haven't followed the development of the game at all, I just assumed when it was announced that it was a PC game.

Charging for a game in this genre on PC is guaranteed failure and with the license and the console versions, free to play doesn't seem like an option.

In my opinion the community has gotten better over the last year or so. And I can't imagine any tutorial process valve can come up with that still doesn't just throw you into swim at the end of the day. If you're really interested I would honestly say that you really should just force yourself through the baptism to get through the other side now.

That is true for your average gamer, but when you have to play through like 3 different games every week the motivation to do so is much lower.

Or wait for the tutorial features to be released and start playing once there is a large influx of other new players you can generally enjoy yourself playing against. That's my idea, at least.

There was a HUGE influx just a few weeks ago, and they're still trickling in. The matchmaking will probably do pretty well with getting you in with them if you're also new. Plus there are bot practice games that still give you hats. I don't know, I really wouldn't be expecting their tutorial to be anything at all better than watching the youtube and written guides that are already out there. All I'm saying is that I believe that you're waiting for something that ultimately will do very little for you to get into it, if you weren't going to get into it in the first place.

That's good to hear that the community has been improving. I've seen so many examples of horrible behavior but to be fair, people aren't going to highlight respectable behavior with screenshots and videos.

Dota 2 will probably end up being similar to competitive 1v1 SC2 for me. I love the game but my own nerves get in the way. It's a personal problem, but I put way too much pressure on myself to perform with these types of strategic games and I'm not quite sure why. More action based MP doesn't have the same effect on me.

I can certainly see the reasoning behind releasing console versions of it (even if I wouldn't want to play them) but not releasing it on PC still seems odd. I wouldn't expect it to flourish in any real way compared to the big name MOBAs already out, but I would have to imagine it would still sell a decent amount of copies based on the license and name alone. If Awesomenauts can have a PC release, why not LOTR?

When I say improved I mean from terrible to just bad. It has it's problems, but it seems valve knows about this and is seriously looking at ways to curb it whether it be a different matchmaking circle or whatnot. So that's good.

I have the same problem with some competitive rts games. I would get terrible anxiety playing SC2 online. Dota is a lot better in me just not caring, but I don't know if that's me, or if it's because there are 4 other guys all contributing and it's not all on me.

I'm betting it will come free to play on the PC eventually. Console versions first so they can charge for the base game.

Guardians is a great moba for console only, has some online issues to sort.

Great QL.

Would love to see a follow up with Brad and Vinny QL the DoTA 2 beta to contrast.

Nobody linked the Don't Starve Quick Look with Patrick and Vinny (35:46)?

Seriously Giant Bomb, if a game has permadeath, how about you say "This game has permadeath" instead of saying "Well, it's kind of a roguelike, well...it has roguelike elements and it's doing a kind of a Dark Souls kind of thing" every single time.

But it is kind of roguelike? It has permadeath, a randomly generated world, and you need to manage your hunger...

Where did the term 'roguelike' originate from? Its overuse has started getting on my nerves recently :P

Even if its valid, it seems like people are straining to crowbar it into their desrciptions :D

With this game it kind of works out. It's just that I recently noticed how I'm bothered by their use of roguelike and Dark Souls-like in the same way some other people are bothered by janky emblemic systems.

There was a game called Rogue that had permadeath and then afterwards games that was like it were called "Rogue like" and it just kind of stuck.

Its pretty dumb. Its like if we kept calling all FPS's doom clones.

At least people making DOTA type games went out of their way to move beyond the DOTA name and we got MOBA.

I wonder if, because the fact that the word Rogue has another meaning, the game is pretty old and ASCII Based and early console/mostly PCs related, people don't even know it's a game, so there's really no reason to distance itself from it.

For instance, funkystudent's point of calling all FPSes DOOM-Clones is just as stupid is 100% correct. I played DOOM, I remember wen people called FPS DOOM-Clones and I always though it was stupid. I never made that connection to Rogue because, well... I never played Rogue.

Also, the fact that you're always alone, managing inventory, going through dungeons of some sort and living off the items of the dead enemies... That's some Rogue (you know, the DND class) qualities right there.

What should we call this genre? Scavenger Adventure-Survival?

The problem with coming up with a 'genre name' for roguelikes is that roguelike is exactly that. The genre has just not been very mainstream and we've only recently seen a larger interest in the genre and its design aesthetics. The original Rogue came out 32 years ago for God's sake!

I wonder if they would get blown away if they sat down and thought really hard about arcade games.
Free play is save scumming.

I've heard Roguelike-like be used to describe stuff like Binding of Isaac or FTL without a hint of irony or sarcasm.
And they are not, why...?

What is wrong with you people? Is it because it's like referring to FPS as 'Doom clones' or is your definition just that much narrower than mine? It's hard to find a snappy term that encompasses permadeath, procedurally generated levels and other random elements, be it loot or events, etc.

There's also apparently a thing where there are elements that consider only the closest to the original Rogue a "roguelike" (ascii art, hunger meter, unidentified items, medieval aesthetic), so stuff like FTL isn a "roguelike", or in extreme cases, even graphical games like Dungeons of Dredmor, hence the like-like-like-like-like...

Rogue-FUCK-FUCK-FUCK-FUCK-FUCK-FUCK-FUCK

In most cases, they could just say permadeath instead of roguelike. They should do that. But it's not like I'm bothered by them using roguelike because it's pretty clear what they mean.
