The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

What was wrong with the quick look of Dark Souls? I don't remember it being bad, or is this just superfans being neckbeards because it wasn't shown perfectly? The Dark Souls Quick Look did a great job giving a sense of how the game is played and what's interesting about it, it really helped me, as someone who had never got around to playing Demon's Souls, understand the game a bit better and made me a lot more interested in playing it for myself.

Their QL of Dark Souls is one of the best QLs on the site. They got Matt Rorie to lead it, someone who actually knew what he was talking about and actually loved the series. Plus there were hilarious moments like the surprise jumping boss and Rorie's run through a level at super low health to luckily reach the next bonfire.

The best part was pausing to explain something right above the Asylum Demon on the basis that bosses don't attack you until you trigger them. Mistake.

Maybe he was talking about the Demon's Souls trailer? That one was pretty bad iirc, but I haven't watched it since 09.

The Dark Souls QL had Brad complaining & showing his disgust for the game throughout.

The Dark Souls Quick Look was just frustrating to watch, because Matt Rorie plays like a wimp and never drops his shield, so he couldn't figure out how to backstab people.

Except for the fact that having your shield up all the time helps prevent death?
No. You are not understanding. If you do not lower your shield while trying to stab someone from behind you cannot backstab them. It also hurts endurance regen. Leaving your shield up while exploring can be smart. Leaving your shield up at all times during combat is not smart.

This actually is not really a viable tactic in the game though. Your endurance will go down fast and you won't be able to kill enemies quick enough. Eventually your stamina will end and you will get staggered and die.

For the record, I enjoyed that Dark Souls QL. Matt Rorie taunting the enemies was pretty funny.

Just picked up the trilogy to play through the series again, myself. They made some nice improvements to Killzone HD. Plays much better and looks pretty good.

KZ1 was a decent game. I got the trilogy recently from BF replay the first game and for the controller. It has the best story of the series. Too bad the sequels got worst in that dept.

I remember fucking hating the controls and check pointing on killzone 1. Traded it in pretty fast.
I liked it. Very gritty and serious compared to the rainbow bright colors and comical grunts of Halo. I liked the different characters and how they had their own special weapons and play styles. It being linear never bothered me. Loved the reload and up close kill animations. I eventually ran into a bug at a beach level that prevented me from proceeding, so I never got to finish it.

What is it that Jeff and Brad are talking about the end of killzone 2? I never played the game and I'm curious.

You should play it. He
kills Visari after they had captured him.
And he was just in general an obnoxious asshole.

you make it sound like the game only works when you try and backstab everyone. I don't think I backstabbed anyone in dark souls and loved every minute of it. Sure, I didn't walk around with the shield up all the time due to endurance regen etc.

I still feel that it's not really fair that Alex got to stick with GB while Rorie got stranded. No offense to Alex because I don't hate him or anything, but Rorie seemed to be really the only person who got completely screwed over by the Gamespot/BermanBraun deal and he really didn't deserve it because he's a great writer. I hope he's finally able to get a permanent job soon.

I'm not really familiar with the circumstances regarding his departure from Obsidian, but I wonder if he misses the development side of the industry.

I always got the impression after he was let go from Obsidian he didnt want to do more work in the gaming industry any more and thats why he put nearly 100% of his time on screened and didnt really do anything with GB unlike Alex who was 50/50 split between the sites a lot of the time.

Also Killzone HD QL is up. Fuck Rico.

Now that the ps3 is plugged in I hope they looked at the ME1 port. Its really weird jumping back into that game after playing anything of 2 or 3.

Yeah Rorie doesn't seem terrible interested in games the way the normal GB crew are. I love Rorie, he's great in those rare occasions he's on GB, but I don't think he'd make a perfect fit as a regular.

Does the game explain that you have to have your shield down to backstab someone?

I strongly disagree. Rorie seems extremely into games.

He'd be the perfect addition to the GB crew: Matt is someone that has a more analytical mind, which makes him a great writer that can succinctly point out problems in games. His ability do delve into game mechanics is much more pronounced than anyone else's at GiantBomb. Just take a look at his blog and see his recent thoughts on Far Cry 3: http://matthewrorie.tumblr.com/post/37204855276/far-cry-3-and-the-curse-of-the-almost-great-game

At the same time, he's also putting together comprehensive game guides for GameSpot:

I only played it at a friend's house, but Killzone 1 was one of the worst controlling games I've ever played, especially compared to Halo 1. Everything feels too heavy, every animation takes way too long, reloading and switching weapons drags your aimer all over the fucking place making it impossible to see anything while you're doing that, all the MP enemies were bullet sponges, there's zero auto aim. Ugh.

It's funny though, KZ1 looks like a budget FPS game made today... like... that Battleship or Battle LA game that came out a while ago.

The age most definitely shows, but I still think it is fun as hell. They did polish it up pretty good, but if you hated it before, then you probably still will.
