The Grand Tour |OT| ...of the world

Ep 3 felt good, always going to be scripted but I can put up with more of this then the soldier stuff.

So... I noticed in the Conversation Street intro that Jeremy was wearing high heels, and now I'm wondering if there's something unusual in every one of those silhouettes that I hadn't noticed before.

They said in ep1 that they made unique intros for each episode

It still has nothing on prime Top Gear yet but episode 3 was entertaining. It was a big step up from episode 2 at least.

Finished the episode, really good and easily the best so far. The self driving car segment was weird but otherwise I loved them being back out on the road with shenanigans aplenty, plus Jeremy's house getting blown up cracked me up... was not expecting that level of an explosion.

Comics, serious business!
First time I'll be watching Top Ge--er, Grand Tour, for actual market research reasons. Really want to get a Hellcat.

Fun episode.

I felt bad that they blew up a beautiful 200 year old home though. I feel like things that have survived so long should be landmarked. :'(

I have to say, having driven an Aston Martin DB11 6 weeks ago, it is truly an astonishing car. I actually quite liked the interior. And the motor really is an absolute joy. Nothing is smoother than a V12, folks.

You can read some of my impressions in the Automotive Discussion Thread OT.

Great episode. Loved the running gag of Hammond doing donuts everywhere inappropriate and Mays annoyance. Fake or not, good stuff!

"The American" could work as a driver, minus all the stupid comments.

But seeing as everyone hates him I bet hes gone as soon as they can replace him.

I'm willing to bet that lawyers said "You can have a racing driver but he MUST talk and he can't be in a full face helmet."

A driver you can't see the face of and that is silent would be too close to The Stig.

Great episode, but I'd argue the segment wasn't scripted enough. I think they need to integrate more challenges/letters from the producer into these long segments.

This is exactly what I was waiting for. Finally felt like old top gear. I guess it helps there was no stupid American NASCAR driver.

However that horse racing at the beginning seemed pretty brutal. The first corner a few horses slammed into the wall, seemingly legs first :/

I will say if I had to pick any of the 3 I think I might actually pick the hellcat.

If you had the money, no you wouldn't. Hellcats are unruly vehicles. The DB11 is pure refinement and speed tied up into one fantastic package.

Just get Ben Collins back, or any of the other old touring car championship champions used on Top Gear. They would be happy not to speak much.

Rewatched this again last night and I love these guys.

You can have your 5 Hellcats, that DB11 is absolutely gorgeous.

Watching it now, from now on I am going to watch this on a Sunday evening when it should be on (used to be on).

Out of interest, I am watching on my Sony BDP-S4500 bluray player via the Amazon Prime app, trying to get in in HD is a nightmare  I have a 100mb internet and I have it connected with a Ethernet cable, I have no way to adjust any settings other than the ones I have already set on the bluray player, so what is the best device to watch Amazon TV on? I do have WiiU, PS4 and X1 but would rather not have it running through a console to save wear and tear.

If it's anything like the player on PS4/PC it *should* auto-adapt the quality based on your speed. I never have to touch it and after a few seconds (20 max) it's in HD.

Use your xbone or wii (aren't PS4s noisy?), the concept of wear and tear on game consoles is a silly proposition. Especially since they are now incremental.

Fun episode.

I felt bad that they blew up a beautiful 200 year old home though. I feel like things that have survived so long should be landmarked. :'(

Jezza is building himself a bachelor pad he is building a brand new 12,173 sq ft home on what Clarkson calls Diddly Squat Farm.

Approved plans for the six-bedroom home claim it will be "a modest country house/gentrified farmhouse which gives the appearance of having grown over time".
It will have a walled garden, orangery, basement cinema and five bathrooms, as well as space for five cars and a quad bike store.

Sometimes it does get into HD eventually, sometimes it doesn't, so I have to stop it and then start from the beginning and then it seems to work.

I don't want to turn one of them on just to watch Amazon though.

Ep 3 was pretty good, I think they felt more comfortable in the tent due to being back in the UK with a crowd they know.

I randomly watched the TG road trip special they have on amazon prime and realized what's lacking in the grand tour = money.

Aren't they on a much higher budget than they ever were on the Beeb? Maybe they're pooling it on only a few episodes?

I think James said it was similar to their Top Gear budget and all of the reports of a massive budget are untrue.

I wonder if they're downplaying it. For starters, the episode 1 opening sequence, although most reported numbers are probably nonsense, wouldn't have happened on the BBC.

I wonder if they just mean actively on the films, they're spending a comparable amount. Like, they will be spending more on 4K equipment. And more on building the studio tent and transporting it. But then when it comes to what they are spending on films/producing for it, probably understandable.

What a phenomenal episode.

A silly challenge, the studio bits were funny and celebrity brain rush continues to be hilarious, mostly because of May delivering his line. Heck even the American was funny this week.

The second part of the challenge had me nearly in tears.

Interesting bit with them repeating Witby as a location for the tent again. They only have 10 tent locations total so we will see another repeat. Wondering where that will be.

So far the only thing I don't like is Conversation Street's intro. I thought it was a one-off gag for the first episode.

Has anyone addressed celebrity brain crash? Are they actually not allowed to have a celebrity on the show and this is their mocking of the BBC?

BBC lawyers don't mess around. They can't even have a silent driver for lap times.

50% of this show is a big fuck you to the BBC :p

I mean... it takes 10 seconds at worst? Even if i find it not funny it's not like it steals time for the rest of the show... for me it can stay.

Watched the first 2 eps, it's shit.

Take everything that was great about Top Gear, disregard it, and you have this show. The last few years of TG was rough, but given total control and a blank cheque and this is what you get.

I knew it would be bad, just not this bad.

I'm going back to watching the first decade of TG. 3 blokes in cars having a laugh, unscripted, as it should be.

Even their car challenge episodes are far too scripted. What a disappointing season so far.

I feel the opposite.

Episode 2 was boring I agree but episode 1, 3 and 4 have actually been really entertaining

Haven't laughed that much at a TV show in ages when I saw Hammond terrorising May on episode 3.

I really do enjoy it.

I was so busy this past week that I didn't even find time to sit down and watch the third episode. I mean, I could have watched it on my laptop in bed or during my commute or something, but I'd rather watch it on my 48in 4K TV in the living room.

On the bright side, double dose of
Top Gear
The Grand Tour this weekend!

It wouldn't surprise me if there's one episode that's a single long film without a meaningful tent component (possibly an intro, but that's it) - it'd be inkeeping with their TG approach to specials.
