Too tightly scripted, hopefully this isn't a normal occurrence going forward.

There should be some level of suspension of disbelief, this had none, especially bad with the forced rape joke.

The military bit was the worst top gear/grand tour segment I've ever seen. Not even Evans era top gear had lows that low. Brutal. Way too forced and not funny at all.

That was bloody awful.

I was hoping they'd move away from the incredibly heavy scripting, but instead they are doubling down on it.

It's entertaining trashy TV.

Anyone going into this expecting DH Lawrence level writing is going to be disappointed.

Just turn your brain off and enjoy the loud engines. You'll enjoy it more.

Speaking of which - Thoroughly enjoyed it

Nobody is doing this. People are directly comparing this to pre-firing of Clarkson Top Gear which is entirely fair.

You can tell they are still trying to find their footing with the new show.

It'll get ironed out.

This is the most reasonable criticism one can give atm.

Well that is exactly it, I don't think it needs that much writing anyway. The show has always been at its best when it was just them shooting the shit about the weird cars they brought on the road trip through or to some exotic location. Maybe that's my problem though, I still think of it as a car show when it obviously hasn't been that for a pretty long time now.

I agree. Show me them ragging fast cars about, show me destroying shit cars, show me ingenious and funny tasks.

The rest is 'fast forward through this' material at times
Specifically the 20 minutes they spent taking the piss out of South Africa's leader. I mean sure the South African's lapped it up but the rest of the world? meh

Their first series of top gear was bad to. Yes they have been together for a while but chemistry can only carry you so far when you're basically at series one for the second time.

If it isn't showing improvement by the end then we worry, as it is now I'm inclined to give them at least one season iron or the kinks.

I am liking this better than the all of Top Gear already. Glad they ditched the celebrity bollocks, very rarely did anything of interest come from that rather than promoting some shit they're doing.

I really didn't like episode 2, it looked like 3 old men on a really high budget army experience day they got from their kids for christmas.

From the previews I was expecting something more akin to clarksons Ford Fiesta Shopping Centre test which was just as scripted and staged but still managed to be genuinely funny.

(edit: this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e7R3y-qwZ0 )

This pretty much sums up my views too ^

Just need some road trips and we are sorted

I don't know what episode 2 was suppose to be...this is entertainment but it's still la show about cars. And we had one Audi car for a quarter of the length of the episode and nothing else really.

That nonsense with military felt so forced, scripting is good and we can suspend our disbelief to a certain extent but this was a bit too much.

I know it's all scripted.

But it's always better when it's not so hideously obvious. The road trips are the best thing they do...these staged features just don't have the same charm.

The only exception is when Clarkson is doing a deliberately stupid review (the new Fiesta, Twingo etc).

Thought the studio stuff was better than last week, but the Jordan stuff was far too forced.

Only interesting "celebrity" bits in Top Gear were the F1 drivers.

Yep.

Enjoying GT but it needs a road trip. Not sure about the guns bit, I mean there are guns and explosions all over Youtube these days, and quite a bit of the comedy missed for me, I dunno, sometimes I like silly Top Gear as much as 'blows me away with the cinematography in a foreign land' Top gear so maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it. I'm sure it'll find its rhythm.

Not a fan of the new Stig though.

The first half of the army stuff dragged on, the second half was a little better but it still lacked cars and vehicles, really.

I know some people that only watch just for those segments though so it's going to be tough to get the balance right.

The only saving grace for ep 2 is that I believe I saw an interview with Andy Wilman where he said they filmed it before Ep 1, so fingers crossed episode 1 is the direction the show is moving in and this was just the starting point.

Never liked Top Gear much and already there are too many studio segments in this show, but goddamn this show is gorgeous. I have it on in the background because of how beautiful it looks.

Grand tour scripted you say? Top gear was always scripted trash.

Like when James May gets on the wrong train and Richard is looking for him as they are racing Jeremy.

Episode 2 is awful, really not feeling the special force segment. Good episode to have it on the background while u browse gaf on your phone I guess...

This felt really pieced together, which is weird for only the second episode.

For some reason the first 5 minutes have turned in to Graham Norton.

Exactly what I thought, I've never been a fan of comedy through visual punchlines.

I don't really understand the point of the main film

It would've made sense if it was about them building the perfect escape vehicle, or each picking a current ____ car and doing challenges, but this just seems like a gag that had no purpose other than having a lot of really good aerial shots.

The military segment felt as stale and uninspired as the latest Top Gear seasons. I hope that the next episode get back on track and delivers as the first one did.

It's a continuation of Clarkson's military fetish. I never liked the military segments on Top Gear, and naturally, I didn't like this a lot.

Episode 1 was nice, though the best thing about Top Gear to me has never been the "car porn" but the guys doing some silly, but creative, stuff. Like building stretch limousines, or the amphibious cars, or the motorhomes, or even stuff like the hovervan or that electric vehicle. And the budget challenges were obviously a high point as well. I hope we see more of that, even though I understand that many people probably watch to see the newest super- or hypercars or what have you.

But, as some have already said, the show is new, and they will likely, as they did on Top Gear, remove and create segments over the months or years. No one misses insider dealing, I'd say, or the fastest political party and drivel like that, and I suspect the same fate will befall celebrity braincrash (which was maybe funny for the first episode, but I do hope that they drop that rather quickly - having a local celebrity die on approach to the tent can only be surprising and/or funny so many times) and maybe the American driver (though I don't mind him that much).
That said though, the show already started off with way more pedigree (and budget) than 2002's Top Gear did, which makes stuff like this second episode look worse in comparison (even though there was plenty of dreary, uninteresting and unentertaining stuff on early modern Top Gear). I remain hopeful anyway.

But I don't want to sound too negative. I liked episode 1, and episode 2's intro tent segment and conversation street were entertaining enough, it's not like I liked every single Top Gear episode, even in the later seasons. I'm just happy that we get more material with Clarkson, Hammond and May and I'm looking forward to episode 3.

It was filmed ahead of everything else. I think they're trying to Americanize things a bit too much.

I really would have loved to see the guys attempt a course or two at the complex and then see them legitimately bicker, be afraid, that sort of thing. Top Gear was always the best when they were set up to fail and then just let the comedy come, even if major beats were scripted.

I don't get why they would do this though, they already have world wide appeal. They don't need to change anything to appeal more to other markets, the audience is already there.

That was incredibly deflating after what I felt was a rather strong first episode. It started off quite good but the entire Jordan sequence was a misfire; it wasn't funny, there was no real punchline or point to it, it felt extremely forced, it wasn't informative, and I really just don't see the point to it. It was just bad, and took up most of the episode (it felt like it went on for forty minutes, but my perception of how long it went on for may have been skewed by my constant waiting for it to end).

So yeah, very unimpressed with that episode, I struggled to make it to the end. I really hope this is just a one-off disaster.

It kinda makes me like some segments of the last Top Gear series more, I know it was bad sometimes, forced but there was some good genuine parts. So far I'm not liking GT, very much miss so far, looks great as expected bit can't say I've enjoyed much of the rest.

I thought it was pretty funny, just the three amigos having fun silly fun. I also liked how location-focused the studio segments were.

The American just doesn't work for me sadly. And it's a shame there will be no celebrity interviews on GT.

Yep, it doesn't for me also. I get that another Stig isn't possible, and is nice see them trying, but two episodes in and I'm tired of the "he thinks everything is communist" thing and guy doesn't really make you laugh.

The Stig worked precisely because he was anonymous, he didn't had a face and a voice.
