The High-end VR Discussion Thread (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Playstation VR)

Entirely fair and well-reasoned.

I went in for the higher priced set because I grew up on X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Descent:Freespace, etc. I've been waiting for the space shooter genre to return for damn near 15 years. So for me, I knew I was going to like E:D, Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, and whatever else that might follow (like EVE:V).

And about 1,500 hours later, I'm still playing ED almost daily. It's almost the exclusive reason why I bought into VR at this stage of its existence (though I'm pleased to have found more reasons).

Yeah, I know the feeling. Replace HOTAS with wheel and ED with pCARS and that is pretty much where I am. Though for my part I basically only tasted pCARS on the DK2 briefly and knew straight away that I needed it. Been trying to save the experience for the retail hardware and proper VR support. I had no qualms about throwing more money at the new wheel setup because I know what I'm going to get back from that.

You think Valkyrie will be good on a HOTAS setup? Wasn't sure if that was going to be too controller-focused to work well or not (but I am not real familiar with them so that may not even matter I guess).

Well, I put in an order for an X52 Pro HOTAS setup. I think that is all I had left to take care of.

Now back to waiting for an e-mail so I can continue to wait.

I have had the Amazon page for the thrustmaster t150 steering wheel open for the last couple of days. Only £100 but it has been an expensive month so I'm pausing. Will wait on Hotas and manage with a controller for now

CH would be doing so much better with gaming/sim enthusiasts if they would just do a mild aesthetic update of their products. They should be much more popular than they are. Though I believe gaming products are kind of a "side" business for them and their main enterprise is manufacturing industrial/commercial control systems.

I actually almost bought the CH set off Amazon instead, I kind of prefer the older asthetic and what I'm sure is like ten times better physical quality. If I wind up really getting into flight stuff that is probably what I'll upgrade to. Are their pedals worth using? It seems like they aren't as highly rated as the HOTAS setup.

I haven't used them myself but the consensus is that they're as good as everything else they make, but the foot placement is very narrow and you might find that uncomfortable.

What do you use for yaw control instead?

"What do you use for yaw control instead?"

In Elite? I use the yaw on low roll setting. In every other space sim I have yaw on the flight stick, so yaw on the stick is comfortable to me. I generally forgo roll or just have it on a hat switch. I don't really play flight sims at all.

Huh. Is that pretty normal? I'm out of my element here, so I just kind of assumed I needed pedals if the stick didn't have built-in rudder control. If I really only need the HOTAS I'll probably go switch my order right now because the main reason the cost difference was hard to justify was the addition of the pedals on the CH setup. I would only be playing space flight stuff too if that matters.

I use the X55 and twist the stick for yaw, a friend of mine uses pedals because he is used to flight sims. It's really not a very important maneuver in Elite anyways, because it's very slow.

Outside of Elite, most space sims have yaw/pitch on the x/y of the flight stick and roll elsewhere, yeah.

Whether you would prefer a stick twist to control roll, or yaw in Elite's case, is something that's preference and there are many who do use pedals to control the "extra" axis. I will say, one major bonus for space sims that the CH gear has is the proper analog stick on the throttle. Because space sims often have translational thrust, I find that and the multitude of 4 way hats to be far more important than having pedals or a stick twist to control a tertiary axis that isn't used much.

With Elite, I only use yaw for minor adjustments.

It's important for aiming fixed weapons but it's not that important for actual maneuvering. I used to use twist on the X55 which was great. I switched to pedals on the CH products setup and it took some getting used to but I'm perfectly comfortable with it now.

Yes the analog stick on the throttle is perfect for vertical and horizontal thrusters. I don't know how I went without it now.

^ fwiw, I still think your plan is sound. If you find yourself liking space sims 6-12 months from now you can just "upgrade" to a different hotas setup. No sense in spending big on a genre you may lose interest in. $0.02
You think Valkyrie will be good on a HOTAS setup? Wasn't sure if that was going to be too controller-focused to work well or not (but I am not real familiar with them so that may not even matter I guess).
I hope it will be. I need it to be!

Also I use pedals for my yaw. I have pitch and roll on my stick and the gas and small thrusters on the throttle analog stick. <3 it

While I bought a wheel, I'm not yet sold on a HOTAS setup. We'll see how much I want to play Eve Valkyrie and Star Citizen I guess since I own both. I mean, Elite Dangerous sounds somewhat tempting and I know is meant to be amazing... but I'm not sure if I'm going to put that much time into it.

But then I didn't used to play racing sims on an expensive racing wheel either until I decided to try out Assetta Corsa in VR on a gamepad and instantly fell in love with racing sims in VR.

Just put a deposit down on PSVR at my local game store. Complete impulse purchase as I was walking past.

He said I'll be able to upgrade to a bundle if one is released but seeing as I won an Amazon voucher I might just get the camera and move controllers separately.

For £1200 that's good. I would think you'd get something similar for about £1300 from PC specialist or other system builders though and they'd probably be easier to update down the line if you care

Yeah that £100 may be what keeps my marriage together. I'd said £800 for PC and £750 for Vive as part of my initial budget. I've sent decided that I'd be safer going for the 980ti and then Preordered Oculus as well so I'll maybe go for the £1200 option for this PC.

The Logitech G29 is going to be on sale on 28th March at Currys for £99.
It doesn't have the gearstick but you can get that for like £40 seperate. The G29 has all three pedals too, whereas the T150 only has two.

I just received these to put up for my Vive lighthouses:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00899801A/

Can confirm it's a standard tri-pod mount, put a camera on there to test. They're just a bit taller than me, I'm about 1.9m (6ft 2 or 3). They're only temporary so I can play around with it immediately and find a good position for them before mounting them on the walls or ceiling.

They're pretty good for the price.

Hmm. I don't need clutch pedals or a proper gearstick - happy with flappy. So a straight fight between G29 and t150. I've read that the belt driven thrustmasters can be smoother and when I used to have a DFGT it could be quite 'notchy' sometimes.

Not sure now

Ooh. That's good to know - I'll look out for that.

I already have project cars on PC - will that get patched to work on the rift or do you have to buy it from the oculus store? And will games bought from the oculus store also work on a normal monitor when I'm not in the mood for VR (obviously only for games that normally support monitor play)

What opinion do you have on this, GAF?

RPS dude has a Vive unlike most of you, but he is too lazy to use it :p
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/03/25/vive-cables/

Guy doesn't even understand the tech behind them. Plug in the motion sensors? The sensors are in the damn headset/controllers. The lighthouses are merely beam emitters. Is it too much to expect a person on a PC enthusiast site understand what they're using? That and on the retail kit they'll turn on by themselves. One "problem" down with no effort required by the user.

Turning on controllers? I'm guessing if turning on wireless controllers hasn't killed consoles in the mass market, then it's not going to be a hindrance here. Also, I'm fairly certain - correct me if I'm wrong - but people have had to press a button (or more) to watch TV all these years. Go back far enough and they even had to get off their asses and press buttons on the TV itself! Hell, even those that have grown up with smart phones are used to pressing a button to turn them on. Another "problem" down.

Loading up SteamVR? Seriously? Are we trying to find the most stupidly small things to complain about? Clicking a mouse button, tough stuff. It's like complaining about having to click a button to view the channel guide on TV. Then again, this is a person that complains about having to power on the controllers in the first place.

Clearing the floor. OK, here's something other forms of entertainment don't have have to worry about. Lets look at it another way though. VR is making people that complain about things like this into better humans. They can no longer wallow in their filth and will actually have to pick up after themselves! This directly ties into the work space looking messy "problem". With proper management, it'll look no messier than a pair of headphones. The biggest issue is the cable, and there's a multitude of solutions for that.

VR isn't the problem here. The person is. Frankly, they should be ashamed of themselves for even thinking of these things as problems.

The real problems he mentioned like not being able to talk somebody through the use of VR remotely aren't even related to "problems" he brought up. You can tell somebody quite easily how to press a simple button to turn a controller on. What you're not going to be able to do is tell them how to adjust the headset's fit and IPD adjustment. Or to explain what every button on the controller does. The fit and IPD problems will be fixed in future generations. Fit will be refined, and once we get eye tracking, we can have the headset adjust the IPD automatically with a small motor. The controller complexity will always be an issue, but at least VR is an inherently more natural interface compared to virtually any other piece of electronics that we use on a day to day basis.

I'm fascinated to try VR but kind of wary of it's application to gaming. I saw Thumper earlier and it was great visually but perhaps not my thing gameplay wise. Of course I'd need to play it to get a real idea. What sort of VR games are on the horizon that really show how good it could be specifically for gaming rather than visuals?

Has anyone tried a game like Fifa 16 on the Rift or Vive? I wonder how a mere PC game translates in the headset.

For an $800 PC thing it's pretty simple. But the one thing I keep coming back to is phones. Phones are not dead simple. Normal people figured out phones because they wanted to. If the experience is compelling enough then people will figure it out.

It's a legitimate issue if your setup is a mess and you have to plug everything, including your tracking boxes, in every time. And then apparently he has to clean the area as well. So sure if it's a hassle you need a compelling reason to not just be lazy.

I had basically said as much before from my experience with the dks and it's why I'm doing a clean permanent install. When I want to play I'll just have to plug the headset into a wall plate that has hdmi and usb in it and grab my controllers.

I have a feeling we'll start seeing shipment emails go out once Palmer Lucky is done with the #1 kickstarter backer. They want to make a big deal about the first person getting his from the maker himself, then usually the shipments start rolling out. It's just good PR.

Sidenote, I called HTC yesterday after everyone else was saying to call them to find out what wave of shipments I was in. The tech said that they were able to find out what wave before but "something changed in the system and now they are only able to see what month it'll be shipped out".... I don't buy that, but whatever, he said I was in April, and couldn't give me anymore information. I ordered about 2.5/3 hours after the pre-orders went live, so I'm just going to sit back and be patient.

Edit: I just got me HTC email saying "It's in the works, my order is being processed!"

Same here.

Also includes this listing (nothing new, but for completeness' sake):

In the Box
  • Base station x 2
  • Sync cable
  • Base station power adapter x2
  • Mounting kit
  • Link box
  • Link box mounting pad
  • Link box power adapter
  • HDMI cable
  • USB cable

Wait, is my Vive order really being processed before my Oculus Rift? I wonder if this means I am in the first wave for the Vive. I always thought I would be in the second. I sure hope so. My Rift is supposed to ship in March, but we'll see.

I got mine as well but can't check the order at the moment it just says my details are incorrect. Hopefully it will update soon.

When I ordered my DK2 it shipped super quick and was delivered quicker than what they said it was going to be delivered. Living 20 mins away from Oculus has its benefits. I hope come Monday, the same thing will be true. That, or I wish I could just drive over there really quick for lunch and pick it up.

I got my processing email from HTC as well, but when I asked they said my Vive would ship in May. So I doubt this means it's happening any sooner.
