Read the books and I'm too also kind of shocked they're so popular. It got so dumb and melodramatic at times I'm still not sure how I manage to finish all books.

And the fact a good portion of the first book is dedicated to kissing(which the author seems to think drives the story), yes kissing, should tell you who this book is for. And why are people so excited to see kids kiss?

What? How can you type that with a straight face? Kissing? That's what you got from the books?

Wow. Man, sometimes I wonder if people even pay attention to what they're reading. In your case... I'm pretty sure you didn't. That is, if you even read it.

Wut? Believe me, I think the first book is largely a POS, but it's a quick read and sort of hypnotic in a train wreck sort of way, but kissing? I only remember one kiss in the whole thing and she did it to 'fool' the audience.

I'm talking about stuff like
"Because the Capitol is reusing footage of the District 13 ruins there just MUST be a group of people living underground!
It's dumb leaps of logic like that that ALWAYS pan out to be true that piss me off. That particular dumb leap of logic fuels
the entire, nation-wide resistance movement!

That's a valid criticism.

Also every single time she figures that someone MUST be dead, 100% of the time they will still be alive. Without fail.

I don't recall any example of this.

Ooh, I just thought of another good one. (CF)
before the Quarter Quell when all 24 of the participants join hands "in solidarity and defiance"
Really?! They all happened to have this same idea at the same time including all potential ramifications it could have for their situation?? Yeah right... Gimme a break with these stupid books.

This one isn't valid, though.
Most of the tributes already knew about Plutarch's plan and all that, so yeah, they acted with that in mind. They could have planned it beforehand, even. The tributes who didn't give a shit or didn't know anything, like Enobaria, were reluctant to do it, but ended up doing it anyway because it didn't matter in the end. It's all there in the book.

Kissing isn't what drives the story. Ratings/popularity are and just like in real life, audience love romance. The more it happened,
the more stuff they got plus sympathy.
To me, it's making fun of books like Twilight.

I think the author puts a spin on it though.
District 13 exists but it is more restrictive and the leader is arguably more evil since she has no problem killing Capital children as well as her groups
. I think her story is pretty neat, but she may not be terribly skilled at writing it in complexity. Maybe she wanted to make sure it stayed for teens.

I agree but for a different reason.
It was clear that all of them were basically doomed the rest of their lives despite being rich and famous. It didn't take much for them to actually become a team. It was also clear that some of them would never join the rebellion since they were less hassled by the Capital.

I didn't care for it because it tipped me off to the rebellion
, something the entire second book did which is why it's my least favorite.
I did like how the success of it turned out.

Agreed.
I thought Plutarch specifically designed this to make sure of it, it's just that he couldn't exclude the ones who weren't down with the cause.

I disagree with him saying the whole book was dedicated to kissing, but
they did it way more than once. They were kissing all the time during the games proper. And it was heavily predicated that kissing and acting like a couple was going to be the key to their survival. It was kind of a big deal. Not the driving force behind the whole story, but definitely prevalent. And stupid.

You should be using more spoiler tags here.

Anyway, it made sense. It was about popularity.

My girlfriend is obsessed with the books so I decided to pick up the first one so that I can go see the movie with her and know what she's going on about... I'm probably like 3/4ths of the way through. The story itself is interesting and it makes me want to read more but GODDAMN the writing is atrocious. Honestly, it's some of the worst writing I've read since I was in middle school.

If the book was written by a competent author it would be amazing... Just thinking about this book written in a Game of Thrones style makes me all giddy inside.

While the story poorly translates onto paper I'm hoping that the movie makes up for that. I think it will be entertaining at the very least.

Then you would have to describe characters beyond how they were dressed.

So in the movies are they actually going to say stuff like "tracker jacker," and "propos," and "morphling?" I don't know if I can cope with an actual human being speaking some of this vocab...

ed: Oh god, "muttations!" Please, no.

@firstshowing:

I have visited The Hunger Games. And they were awesome. I think I loved the movie, as good as the book. Had a LOTR-epic feeling by the end.

@devincf:

OK, embargo has been explained. I can say that HUNGER GAMES is really good, a terrific scifi film even non-fans will dig. Smart, exciting.

@germainlussier:

The Hunger Games - B+. An exciting, emotional adaptation that gets most everything right. Its one flaw is it might be too smart for itself.

@colliderfrosty:

if you're a HUNGER GAMES fan, happy to report the film is great and you're going to be very happy with Gary Ross' film.

Good early impressions (especially from first showing and collider).

Now just to get to next Saturday. I am excitied for this movie (and cuz I get to watch Jennifer Lawrence)

I didn't need to hear anything positive about the film to be excited to watch it, but now I'm really excited.

At the library reading EW and there is a box saying 4 things you won't see and it's a depressing list. The reasons given make sense and explain it may not have been budgetary but still.

What are they?

hate spoilers on the phone but they are
Limited avoxes
No Madge
Capital is indeed toned down on purpose
Cinna's crew has reduced time. So no bringing Kat to base 0 (I think that's what they call it

Those don't seem like that big of a deal....

They're not (except for the Capital which is a big deal but understandable within a movie), they're just depressing.

Yah, though I really like how they've handled they way Effie Trinkets makeup/outfit, pretty much exactly how I'd expect the capital folks to look. Though I'm kind of bummed that
they haven't (from the trailers anyway) done the fire outfit for the interview with Caesar.
But whatever....

Pretty much what I meant. Thanks for stating it better.
