Okay, so an avatar bet then. But an avatar of the winner's choosing. And whomever loses has to use it for a month or two months?

And that is total gross WW. Not opening weekends or days. I know DKR will win opening weekend over Hobbit. But Hobbit will have stronger legs.
Two months sound excellent, good sir. It's a bet.

Has Donald Sutherland gone senile? I saw this today http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/...tial-American-film-since-I-cant-remember.html

Just read through the first book in an afternoon. Fairly enjoyable despite the flaws. I also thought there were a lot of boring chapters where nothing happened at all.

Hard to really find it that great when I've seen Battle Royale the movie and read the manga, which I thought were definitely more deep in the survival game aspect.

Going to see this at an advance showing purely based on my love for Battle Royale. I don't expect it to be as good but I like the concept. I just ordered all three books since they were only £5 new, not sure whether to read the first before watching the film.

My wife just started reading the book and she's devouring it. Looks like I should plan to be there opening night.

Awesome. I've been itching for a new event movie.

I avoided it for a while based on it being the new "teen" book that people that liked Twilight were into.. But they're actually really good. I recommend checking it out.

Might be the first book I buy to read on the new iPad!

My expectations: It can't possibly be worse than the book, so I'll probably enjoy it if only for having suffered through those.

Has every chick in the world read these books or something?

My mom and sister asked if I wanted to see this next week to which I gave the biggest "uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh I'll think on it" response.

Any word on how the movie is handling the
dogs with people faces
towards the end? Still worried about how that will play with general audiences, as it is laughable enough in book form.

I thought they were described as kind of like
werewolves that shared some superficial features with the dead pledges, particularly the eyes. Will probably be CG'd up like a mofo. I don't think Cato's death (basically being mauled to the point of being unrecognizable for hours while begging for death) is something that will get a laugh out of the target audience.

There you go. And I wouldn't expect awesome prose. The first book is pretty tight and is a definite page turner. The second starts out slow but becomes great. And I'm on the last one now. Part of the draw is just the world that is created, which I've always envisioned to be similar to City 17 in Half Life.

RT @jamesrocchi:

Whoa. James is usually pretty critical as well.
I'm trying to remember if I was emotionally moved by the Matrix. If they did this right, it can't help but have emotional impact.
Even the deaths of the bad kids is offputting in the novel.

Now if he had said Children of Men (Non-American) I would skip work to see it opening day. Regardless, this seems like a winner.

Sounds like some BIG hyperbole. Is Sunshine considered a British Sci-fi film? It was made with Fox Searchlight. You're telling me this is a better Sci-fi than Sunshine. That is a big fucking call and not one I'm ready to believe.

If you look through his feed he goes through and defends his claim and mentions just about every other sci-fi film. And yes, Sunshine is not considered American AFAIK.

And...off the top of my head:

AI
Minority Report
The Fountain
Children of Men
Inception

I'm gonna go with lol no

He also considers Children of Men a British sci-fi film, so you can probably assume the same for Sunshine.
Not that Sunshine is anywhere near the best sci-fi film of any decade or year, but that's a discussion for another time.

I'll take you up on that bet. ;) Dark Knight Rises > Hobbit worldwide thanks to a monster domestic difference.

For the record, I also believe DKR will taking home the opening day and weekend records, with $100m and $205m, respectively.

No way TDKR grosses more than The Hobbit. No difference in domestic gross will be big enough to overcome the massive overseas gross of The Hobbit. It's going to thrash everything overseas.

Not surprised by the reviews. The first book was the type of book that would make a great movie. Its the other two...

You meant "the last one...", surely.

I trust Gary Ross will be able to figure something out for that one.

The hype for this movie is going stratospheric, and we're not even in the week leading to opening day when advertising kicks into high gear.

I'm thinking this might shatter even the optimistic expectations.

This shows that people are starving for scifi that has even a little bit of depth.

Tonnes of session at my local theatre - who are doing three concurrent midnight screenings are already mostly sold out. Shit is gonna do gangbusters.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see this come close to the Twilight sequels openings. It's got a rabid fanbase like those movies and the crossover appeal they lacked.
