But you asked if its worth it, to which my answer was along the lines of asking what 99c is worth. That's my point, it's this crazy valuation of pennies in a culture where it costs me £1.50 to even get cash out from a cashpoint... We are at a point where considerations of storage space are more important than the cost of games, for the most part. And of course it's worth 99c, real people spent months of their lives on it, that's worth a handful of anyone's pennies. And surely, if they've created something that you even find interesting, it's worth the money for their time and effort?

If you had asked "is it good?" you would have got a nicer answer. Anyway, you havent answered my questions yet, so I take personal offence and have added you to my vendetta list. Beware!!

So what you're saying is that the worth of the word worth is worth worrying about as opposed to the worthiness of the game itself, notwithstanding the worth of the worthy few who can afford to fork their money to every seemingly worthy developer regardless of the aggragate recreational worth of their so-called worthy product?

Seriously though, what the fuck did you think I was asking for? A cost-benefit analysis?

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Seriously though, it's 2am and WTF did I just read.

Like you said Dave, it's weird but the costs really do add up - if you bought every game that's even regarded as 'good' on iOS (as it's so easy to do) you're looking at potentially thousands (or even tens of thousands!) of pounds... it's not really like a console where the purchases are big and you maybe buy one game a week, one game a month or whatever, it's so accessible you can easily buy 10 in a day if you were so inclined - that's probably why people are growing more reluctant just to take a chance on a game now. Even today, three really big games were released.

Anyhow, finally got around to playing GrooveCoaster - meh, meh, meh and meh. The gameplay is uninspired, and the music is pretty much terrible. I'm only onto my 8th song I think, but really struggling to find the motivation to keep playing

Thousands? Hundreds of thousands? Exaggerate much?!? Aside from rich folk like the lovely SmokyDave, most of us don’t sit at the appstore, nosing the ‘buy’ button over and over again like labrats at some kind of digital entertainment feeder. Over the course of a couple of years, I’ve certainly spent hundreds of pounds but I very much doubt it reaches into four figures.

When I think about it, the point I keep coming back to is there are only so many hours in a day, and days in your life. Yes, you could certainly buy every app that catches your fancy (although I posit that would be a much smaller number than you suggest), but you would never have enough time to play them, and certainly not to any depth. As some may be aware since I’ve been posting updates, I have been working through my game backlog and really getting my money’s worth (and more so) out of the games. And if anything, this has convinced me that the OCD purchasing of games just because they’re there is just pointless. In doing so, I have ignored so many amazing experiences, burying them under freebies and cheapies. So no more, I will buy what I will play and that’s it. I still have plenty of games on my wishlist and I will get to them as time dictates.

But my point in all this is that if you buy games in a healthy, controlled manner, then price is very rarely a factor. A few quid a week will not break the bank, whereas if I bought all the games out today then I would certainly be the poorer for it, and I may not even get to play some of these games for weeks. It’s daft.

Anyway, I think I have beaten this point rather to death, so I better do some work :P
Btw, Groove Coaster rocks!

I have no idea what you just said, apart from the general whiff of jerkiness emanating from the post. Let me try to break it down... no... no, I still don't get it.

But yes, a cost benefit analysis would be lovely, I expect it on my desk by close of play today. Ta.

This made me lol really hard.

I quite like Burnout Crash. Only played the first couple of levels but the explosions look nice and I'd happily pay £3 for nice explosions.

I'm saving Crow for when I get home. Will enjoy it in a comfy chair, in a dark room, with some decent cans on.

LostWinds

What's New in Version 1.0.2
- New iPad (3rd generation) runs at full resolution
- Further control improvements (multi-touch and D-Pad)

YES

Don't you make me buy it you bastard. I've already bought a game by one stonkingly-British developer today, I don't need another!

Honestly, I don't think I'd recommend it. The 'flicking' doesn't feel terribly 'tactile' and the collisions aren't as meaty as I'd like. I'll still play and enjoy it, but I can see others deleting it after a couple of levels. It's also one of the few games that make me long for the larger screen of the iPad because it can be tough to follow your car on the iPhone.

But is it WORTH IT???

The coffee I'm drinking right now costs more than double it and will last me less of it. SO CONFLICTING /sadface?

:D

Please don't take my satirical questioning as an actual question :P It's fully worth it, since, judging by screens, it's a high quality game that people spent a lot of time on.

Actually, I'm putting my money where my posturing mouth is and buying the game at lunchtime along with Crow. I will make sure I come back to the thread with a definitive value statement asap.

Ah, somewhat glad to hear it... and not, at the same time. Perhaps someone could somehow marry Minter's retro stylings with Criterion's Burnout and make an Outrun-esque parallax Burnout game. About the only way a Burnout game could possibly work on a phone, I'd think.

Have you tried 8-Bit Rally? It's basically Lotus Challenge. Final Freeway is a nifty Outrun clone too.

So is Lost Winds worth it? Curious now that it's 99c and optimized for retina.

on wii it's excellent. kinda a baby's first metroid game in structure but with a lovely art direction, a very nice, charming feel to it and some good puzzles. short for a downloadable but doesn't outstay its welcome. don't know how it controls though on ipad, the wii controls did an amazing job of tying the various elements which might not translate, but for 99c it's worth the risk imo

So has anyone tried Max Payne yet? It looks like the new iPad is plagued by choppy framerates according to Slide to Play.

Which kinda sucks since that was going to be my main device to play it on.

8 bit Rally doesn't work for me... Just crashes. Very weird.

Ah, that's a pisser. Just re-installed it on my iPhone (4) and it runs fine for me.

I didn't like the first Final Freeway, the controls are terrible and there are no forks in the road (ie. no stage selection). The second one, Final Freeway 2X, is absolutely amazing, though!
Ah, shit, I had no idea there was a sequel!

Seems I need to free up even more space....

I said tens of thousands, not hundreds. Add it up and you'll be surprised. The Cave collection at full price alone would cost well over $100 right? Square Enix would probably double that.

I reckon quite a few people here would have spent upwards of a thousand dollars on games, and more when you factor in IAP.

Can I please just say a huge thanks to the people who gave me some tips on King of Dragon Pass yesterday - enjoying my second game so much more, my people are content and things (for now) are going smoothly.

Last time I made the mistake of making decisions based on I thought was the 'nice' thing to do but somehow also ended up fueding with lots of clans and was attacked relentlessly, as well as going through a period of attacking people myself... this time I haven't done a single raid, or a single quest, and things are going well! I have two feuding clans at the moment, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to turn them into allies :)

Does that game have a lot of replay value?

Is that the case even if you install from iTunes over USB?

yes.

Watch your usage on the meter carefully.

Say you download a 150MB app. As you sync, it shows up twice, once in "Apps" and once in "other".

Then once the sync is done, you can watch the app install (blue progress bar) on your iPad.

Then once it has installed, a few seconds later, the 150 MB in "other" frees up as it deletes the package.

Yeah, I know that. It's dumb.

Still, I should be able to download since 1.1 + 1.3 < 2.6. Unless it's double the installed space.

It's not really that dumb, it's smart. It's a way to prevent people from stuffing up installs.

What is dumb, though, is that the iTunes reporting is not necessarily that accurate. It might be double the install space. I normally just delete some other big game, perhaps not as big, install the new one then reinstall the old one.

It sucks to manage, I know, but thems the breaks.

Does that game have a lot of replay value?
Yes. Without a doubt yes. The depth here is amazing, I'm not sure I'll play another game after this to be fair, but I'm certainly enjoying my second playthrough a lot more than my first.

Not only could you adopt an entirely different stance in a different playthrough (focus on war, magic, exploration, diplomacy, trade, quests etc) there are so many different stories and interesting events that I think it'd take many playthroughs to see them all.

@ mrkgoo - ah, interesting, thank you! That's annoying, but on the plus side should ensure there's plenty of room for photos etc :)

here is a fun fact

I have bought three versions of Tetris from EA

Two (including the iPad-version) of them are not available on the iTunes store anymore

Instead they have a new version of Tetris for 5 € with iaps.

Fuck EA

I must ask Mario, is there a way for Monster Flip to be made to work in landscape mode if you flip your iOS device? Just the monsters would have to flip upright when you do this.

We talked about this early on while the mechanics were still being worked out. Given there is directionality to the "gravity", and there are a different number of rows verses columns also affecting the monster feed, you'd be affecting gameplay and difficulty subtley if such functionality was implemented.

Oh I know I know, I didn't answer seriously either. :P

It's not exactly a 2:1 ratio but yes, think of app .ipa files as mildly compressed .zip archives that uncompress to install on your device. You can see what your installed apps take up in space under the Usage menu on the device itself, an example would be The Bard's Tale, the .ipa is 1.34gb to download and once installed on a device the game takes up 1.69gb of space.

Ah cool.

Dam those achievements are hard. Here I thought was doing great at 260K in classic mode haha.
