Hwa Jai's insanely popular among Japanese players, I think Tokido use him quite a bit.

get drunk and go crazy.

I tried that with Chin, but I wasn't very safe with him. Should have done more EX rolling wrist attack to stuff things.

Also who is the preferred grappler these days?

Vice
Raiden
Clark

Vice isn't too bad, those half circles though! Hwa is awesome when I can get his knee to work reliably.
I'm trying out Athena, Andy and Terry now, Andy is hilarious to launch across the stage with. Athena's reflect works great at the right times too, but I wish she looked like she did in 2002... she looks a little out of place or something now.

They are all very good in their own unique way, wouldn't classify any of them as weak.

Oh sorry...I saw Kim in your avatar and on reflex I started to panic and mash buttons.
Anyhow, yeah I forgot about Daimon which is odd given my love of Segata Sanshiro. He's one of those characters I'll either destroy outright or he'll run a train on my whole team. Its weird that way that if he takes out my Andy I tend to lose my gameplan with everyone fearing all that damage he can put out. His seismo slap is pretty interesting to say the least.

Personally, even though I play Vice I think I enjoy watching Clark the most due to the whole Hellpockets "Come at me Bro!" thing. I love seeing him keep getting those argentine backbreakers. Its like one big mind game trying to figure out when its coming sometimes.

Ahhhhhhh man! :)
If that happens him and me would both be using Vice and K'. She does best with meter BTW. Hope you like half circle motions and QCB.

Also a good speed character is Kim. I've kind of had problems fighting one as of late so I'll definitely vouch for his pressure with the quickness he has. Haven't played him though so I'm not sure what his drive cancel combos feel like.

BTW how does everyone feel about Hwa Jai and Elizabeth? I hardly see them on stream lately, but they seemed quick too. I've kind of only played around with about 9 characters (Andy, Vice, K', Chin, EX KYO, Mature, Iori, Claw Iori, Shen Woo)...and out of those I only can say I REALLY used 5 which is my current team plus 2 others.

I like Liz, she does really good damage even though she is a bit execution intensive. Jump D is a pretty good defensive/offensive tool. She isn't played much any more due to her lack of reliable anti airs I think.

Elizabeth was nerfed heavily from arcade to console which killed her use quite a bit.

Hwa Jai's weird in that he's one of the best characters and yet not many people use him as much. He was a lot more common earlier this year and at EVO but he's kinda fallen off the radar since. Definitely seen a lot in Japan though.

There's that too, yeah.

Btw, madkof is playing on the cafeid stream.

God EX Kyo is like a sandbox off of qcf DD (doublekick). I tried messing with it and noticed if I followed it up with qcf C (the hook) and then went for EX dp (AA flame spin) that they sometimes end up behind me and I put myself into the corner. Is this a thing? Is there a strict timing thing to this move to keep them in the corner? So weird.

Common follow-ups after EX Kyo's qcf DD:

- hcb+K, for a hard knockdown and (on most characters) an easy safe jump setup in the corner
- Orochinagi
- Orochinagi EX (avoid that in the corner though, but note that you don't actually have to drive cancel hcb+K into it midscreen, just hold forward a little bit before pressing the buttons to cover the distance you need)
- (a bit further than midscreen) hyper hop D, followed up by a run for a cross down mix-up. In that situation, hi-jump down+C will also allow you to cross-up while hyper hop B hits from the front while being a safe jump even against Karate's DP.
- in the corner, qcf+A (or C, makes following up harder though for minimal damage gain), then the rekka series into the ground pound if you want the most meterless damage.

Hey so i've been playing this game a lot since they they put it up on PS+. Wouldn't mind playing with a gaffer one of these days.

Also I hate Clark so fucking much.

Really didn't know that, I thought it was after you win you can't change order (or chars) no matter what. Speaking in general unless you meant specific to this tournament.

The winner can't change order or characters in most games, such as Marvel, but the KOF tradition is apparently that the winner can change order if the loser brings it back to that screen. Can't change characters, though.

I meant to post this yesterday, but Scribblenauts ate my time and I forgot.

Thank you EX KYO!

Took on my buddy's team and ran into trouble. He leveled up his Ralf as more than just a meter builder and K' was super weak and free by the time his anchor Kim came in (my problem matchup for K' on his team). Swapped out to EX Kyo after getting crushed and once it came down to EX Kyo vs Ralf and then Kim his jumping double fist wrecked house into the double kick combo stuff I'd been working on grinding. EX Kyo is definitely better at handling the mid range game easier than my K', but he didn't sacrifice the cornering stuff I wanted.

I dropped shit that could have been longer, but I don't even care. He took care of my problem character so I have my counter pick character. I may just try K'/ Vice/ EX KYO when I take him on next time since I bet my K' could deal with his King easier than my Andy and still build good meter for Vice. In any event you guys helped a ton. Thanks for this.

misterio changed team/order after brackets reset then won then changed order again, that normal in tournaments? I usually thought you weren't allowed to change order/team after winning. Great matches though.

30:15 had some nice yuri combo
Its kinda 'standard' (MEXICAN RULES!) to allow changing the team order.

Good to know Ex Kyo's working for you, but for extra Kim help try using cr.a more to beat his st.d.

Also I made a tier list out of boredom, and to incite conversation. Honestly my opinions are mostly based on tournament performance and popularity, and general intuition.

Tier List

Thanks for the tip. I was mainly focusing on the dB into sB stuff and neglecting cr A entirely since I was familiar with doing that from Vice and from practicing that for my combo starter. Does that also go into sB or db? If so I can put it in the front of my combo pretty easily.

You can combo most cr.as into itself to link into specials. I am not sure if you can link it into a st.b, but you could use it to frame trap.

Cool. I'll mess around and see what it combos into in case it hit confirms and I need to convert it. Hopefully I can get it into st B so I can just muscle reflex the same combo with it, but if not I can always find something to cancel into I bet. Man EX Kyo is good for combos and pressure.

Just downloaded this from PSN+.

Felt like entering online just for shits and giggles.

First opponent was a Lv.40 guy with 700W/300L rank. Juggled my three characters with Takuma.

Why am I not surprised.

Yeah, there quite a few veterans online, but there are a quite a few new players online too.

Feel free to ask questions if you need help.

These guys are great. Definitely ask questions. They helped me with everything from combos to approaches to even figuring out what characters I'd enjoy digging into based on the kind of characters I played in other games.

One of the best communities in fighters. Even the Facebook groups were this way. Folks who play KoF just seem to really welcome others taking an interest and do their best to get people to play and enjoy themselves. Who do you play right now?

Well, I'm not unfamiliar to KOF really, never been good at it but been playing it casually ever since 95.

I'm still getting around to fight correctly using the DS3, I know a proper joystick is the way to play, but I'll stick to this right now.

Right now the main goal is to figure out the Drive Cancels, and learning the attacks of my characters, I use King ever since '98 because her controls sit right with me for some reason, there's Terry, which works for me since I'm a newb to this new way of KOF and maybe Kyo?

I'll definitely get into play this more, but the previous post was to refer, in a jokingly manner, my overall bad luck with fighting games. :p Need to learn the whole "anchor", counter picking and whatnot, thanks for the responses.

Don't like to usually comment on tier lists because they are pointless for this game but there's no way Mai is that low, she's really good.

Im pretty much in the same boat in that I've played and own almost every KoF, but I've only ever casual played the games. I started playing fighters seriously with MVC3 and now Im trying to learn KoF XIII properly just like you. Im only just now starting to get a few things and I got a local guy who plays me when I see him.

Counting you I think that makes 3 of us who have picked this up in the past few months that are trying to learn the game here so don't worry about being alone. Nice to have you aboard with us.

Ryo and Billy are pretty simple characters, try those two.

Drive Cancels allow you to cancel specials into another special move, they are like FADCs in SF4. Unlike FADCs, you can DC when hitting an opponent, not but when the opponent is blocking, unless they are in HD mode, but you don't need to know about that yet. To help with execution, try holding down your inputs(KOF repeats inputs for a few frames when held down) and timing you inputs with the hit spark of the previous move.

Your Anchor character is just the guy who does the most damage in your team, or your best character. It's really not that important right now since, you are just starting out.

I don't think she is bad, but I think she lacks in defensive options compared to everyone. The best thing she has without two bars( and even then, her ex Super is just as reliable as an AA as Iori's) is far c, which you won't have in the corner.

That's not enough to deem her bottom tier.

Mai in XIII is a character that shines through solid fundamentals. Spacing and footsies are a huge part of her game and, depending on where she is on the screen, her damage output ranges from good to excellent.

King has some of the easiest Drive Cancels of any character so practicing DCs with her is a good start as well.

In the meantime have some Kyo Neomax ticks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_Tbs-6dMhg

Huh...so is regular Kyo's Neomax harder to setup than EX Kyo's?

Im pretty certain I can get more before a neomax in the corner with EX Kyo than this. I swear I've done final showdown into his Neomax before for better than this and I can pretty much get a combo into double kick and cut it off into it as well cant I?

I think that's enough considering that every other character gets better though solid fundamentals and have good damage output, too.

Who do you think is worse than her?

I just don't like how many ppl overestimate Hwa, always seeing him in the same league as Karate in many tier lists.

I think Hwa is a little better than Karate since he requires less resources than Karate to do damage. ..at least I think he does, if anyone could prove me wrong they can.

No one, the game is balanced in the sense that there is no bottom tier. That big row of characters you have above her for example, I could easily see her being a thorn in any of their sides and a whole bunch of characters above them.

I just don't like how many ppl overestimate Hwa, always seeing him in the same league as Karate in many tier lists.

Hwa is a pretty bullshit character, he has a ton of things going for him. A high level Hwa is often more painful to watch than Karate.

If anyone wants to play I'm on right now.

PSN: Pointoro

I sent you a friend request on PSN, same name I'm using on GAF. I won't be able to play for the next two weeks because of exams but then I'll get on. Like a day after my exam there is going to be a local tourney and I'll be entering this game and AE. Will surely need some practice.

For those that missed this CafeID had a really good series of matches awhile ago and the archive is up for it. Absolutely great stuff Skip ahead past them messing around in trials. Also WTH shirtless Benimaru? How many characters have alt outfits that are more than pallete swaps to unlock?

For Benimaru it's just a matter of making sure that his shirt's color matches his skin's - you can do this with other like Raiden too, and to a lesser extent with things like Joe and Hwa's wrist bands.

A few others actually get alternative looks if you select them while holding Select(PS3) or Back (360), like Andy (eye mask), Raiden (removes mask, looks like his Big Bear self), Yuri (gives her ponytail back), Takuma (puts on the tengu mask), Ralf (camo pattern on his pants), Kyo (get a headband and short sleeves).
Maybe there are more, but these are just off the top of my head.

Bala is being interviewed after winning at NEC - in English!
I've honestly never seen him speaking english at an event, but maybe I just haven't followed enough of those - I was getting this disturbing impression that a meme might be developing where excelling at KoF and speaking english might be mutually exclusive.
On some level, I think the scene needs this, so if Bala's putting in extra work in that aspect, kudos to him.

Edit: evo 2013 trailer released, has KoF finals footage: http://shoryuken.com/2012/12/02/evo-2013-july-12-14-at-paris-hotel-and-casino-las-vegas/

Not happy KOF got the shaft for the Shiny New Games at NEC, they should have planned this better if everyone wanted their game on the main stream.

I hate to say it, but this game needs an update so the pot monsters would hop on its nuts again.

Anyways, I'm still terrible at the game. I am getting out-foostied by better players, or getting wreaked by mindless and predictable rushdown.

Would someone please tell what to against Duo Lon and Chin please?
